Godzilla dvd and blurays : The Showa Period

This is the First in a series of videos where I cover my godzilla collection and all the other region 1/A dvd and bluray releases of the series.
In this one im covering the Showa Period!

I've got a soft spot for Godzilla VS. Megalon. Came out the year I was born. And I saw it at my local theatre as a kid (on a re-release) I'd say around 1980-1983. Too young to appreciate it.
Just some extra info, the reason the Japanese version of King Kong vs Godzilla is relegated to the supplements disk is because universal mandated criterion treat their version of the film as the primary version. Since universal owns the rights to King Kong, they also need to sign off on any release of the Japanese version of the film as far as I’m aware. It’s unfortunate, but I’m just glad we have it for the first time in North America.
I was lucky enough back in mid-2019. To find the "Godzilla vs Hedorah" Blu-Ray for $14. It was a good movie. Then when my birthday came around in December. I got the Criterion Godzilla collection as a present. So I gave the "Godzilla vs Hedorah" Blu-Ray to my friend. Even though it's been over a year. He hasn't watch it yet, because he said "I don't really have time." Strange you can't find 2 free hours out of an entire year.

Wow! This was an awesome history lesson on the Showa period! As usual, I love when you include a review of the menus at the same time as reviewing the movies. Man that Criterion set looks sick!! It definitely looks like something to consider for a noob that wants to get into Godzilla. Looking forward to watch the other videos!
I had the new "Showa-Era Films, 1954-1975 " Bluray boxset in my hands last weekend at Bullmoose. Expensive! But oh my. HOLY COW I just got to the point in the video showing that you own it. NICE.

Huge Godzilla fan myself. Have been my entire life. Own all 32 films on DVD. Used to own the first 23 films on VHS but sold those like an idiot. Also own all 3 seasons of the 70s Hanna-Barbera Godzilla animated series on DVD as well. Also own all the Kong, Mothra, Gamera, Ultraman, etc...films as well as many other kaiju films from the 50s up till the modern day. Looking forward to checking out your next installment covering the Heisei, Millennium, and Legendary eras.
thanks man! yeah at i'm only missing one of the godzilla's which is not an easy one to locate but that'll be the next video! I've never gotten into the animated series much i think i only saw one episode with the whole " GODZILLA....and godzoooki" thing, still awesome though. Gamera is next on my radar of things to get but recently i snagged all of "ultra q" on bluray which is basically japanese monster twilight zone so i highly recommend it - Alex

Thank god I pre-ordered destroy all monsters before it was released on DVD/Blu-Ray so yeah I got a pre-recall Destroy All Monsters (the one with special features) DVD
I managed to get all of the kraken release before the criterion collection
I finally bought Godzilla: King Of The Monsters (2019) on Bluray this week. FYI Walmart had the 4K (!) Bluray (comes with standard Bluray too) on for only $18.96.
I knew there were a lot of godzilla films but Jesus 😂 Really insightful video
And we still got furture movies on the way man so get ready

I still don't know why the Criterion Boxset doesn't have all the English versions. If it did it would be PERFECT.

@@CineBrosSupreme You think there's any chance for some of the other Showa era movies to get blu ray releases with English dubbing? Not crazy about trying to get my hands on the Classic Media release along with the Criterion release just so I can have MOST of the Showa series. Even worse, they're not all the same format.
@@ectofriend Its really hard to say honestly. I think its a situation where the copyrights are all over the place. I can only hope for more godzilla boxsets but who knows even a re release of just biollante seems far off. In my part 04 of these videos I do a quick recap and cover what releases are best to grab. Though it changes constantly with godzilla stuff unfortunately.
I have the Tokyo Stock DVDs of both Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla vs. Megalon. Destroy All Monsters is fine but my disc for Megalon freezes for the last five minutes of the film skipping the Jet Jaguar theme which really sucks.

(You guys might not be old enough, but) have you ever played EPYX's "Movie Monster Game" (for the Commodore 64)? The gameplay was a little slow but I loved all of the little details (like the 'trailers' before the main show). However, I could never figure out why they made Godzilla BROWN in the game, even though he's GREEN on the box art. It was an officially-licensed game.
hah i've never played it but have seen it before and love the fact that all the monsters are rip offs excluding godzilla. I also never understood why they made him that color, the pixel art is really good to but something about the shade they picked makes him look like he's made of melty caramel? i don't know :P -Alex
