  • John Long from North West Missouri owns this 1966 Massey Ferguson 165 Gas, completely restored by his long time friend Gene Taylor.
    The Massey Ferguson Model 165 was built from 1964 until 1975. This tractor has a 4-cylinder, 176 cubic-inch gasoline engine that can do about 40 horsepower on the drawbar and about 47 horsepower on the PTO.
    Back in 1975 this tractor would have cost you about $6,700 US dollars or about $32,370 US dollars in 2019.

    My uncle has a Massey 165. I remember he would have me driving it in the cowyard with a drag or hauling corn or round balers. He still has it and still farms with it.

    Good ole tractors. I used to have a 135. What I liked was you could run these hard all day on 5 gallon of fuel or less. Great machines.

    Finally a MF! I grew up running primarily MF tractors, one of the 1st tractors I did field work with was 1965 diesel MF 65. My Dad still has the 1982 MF 285 that replaced it.

      My dad bought a 165 diesel new in 1966, loved that tractor. Wish I had one. Great tractor.

    Love this video! There is a lot of unsung praise for these tractors, as well as a lot of unfair criticism. These were some of the most reliable, simple-to-service utility tractors ever built. Nobody will ever convince me that a JD 2010 or Ford 4000, just for example, is any better. I like JD and Ford fine, but M-F enthusiasts have caught a lot of unfair heat over the years, particularly since M-F has become something of a beleaguered competitor after being acquired by AGCO.

    I grew up on the family Dairy Farm driving my Dad's 1968 MF 180. Seeing this painted beauty makes me miss the 180 even more.

    I love the multi power. When I was working for a local Massey Ferguson dealership farmers would want me to lock the multi power out so it didn't work. It really botherd me to have to do that because I guess because the neighbor down the road had his done everyone else wanted. That was such an awesome option on a Massey Ferguson tractor I never understood why they didn't want it.

    • @guyzoo440
      @guyzoo440 4 роки тому +4

      Well the only down side of the multipower is that in low range you cant rely on engine braking you only have brakes, other than that it works awesome

      @mosriteflyinfingers9252 4 роки тому +2

      I don’t know this to be 100% true, but from once having worked at an M-F dealership, the Multi-Power function could be prone to breakage and difficult to repair. I guess the closest comparison would be to Ford’s Select-O-Speed transmission. The Multi-Power function might even be M-F’s attempt at copying the Select-O-Speed, considering that they were direct competitors with Ford. It was certainly less problematic than the SOS tranny, though.

    • @tommyw.9424
      @tommyw.9424 4 роки тому +3

      @@mosriteflyinfingers9252 No, hell no. The SOS was a full powershift through 10 gears, the Multi Power is just a two speed add on to the basic MF six speed. Multi Power is a competitor to the IH Torque Amplifier, and its downhill limitation is the exact same as the early TAs.

    When my dad was my age late teens early 20s, he put in lots of hours doing hay work and plowing on a Massey 165 Perkins diesel with Multi Power. My grandpa had always been Massey Ferguson before switching to Ford in the 80s/90s. I've been looking for a year now to find a clean, original 165 diesel with Multi but they are so easy to find rough and so hard to find nice, or at least nice with the options I would want.

    My neighbour back home still has his 165 MF with a cab & front loader. Great, dependable tractor. It’s has a little brother 135 MF & bigger brother 1105 MF. This is the same neighbour that has a large Massey Harris collection and miniature machines. I wish you would do an episode with him. You won’t be disappointed.Let me know if you’re interested and I can get contact info for you.
    Thanks for the great vid & story of this beautifully restored 165!

      Yep 1105 was a beast. 1135 was too. Being a ten or eleven yr old boy and getting to drive something that big, with that much power was big fun. More fun than watching TV.

    I am currently restoring a 1971 Mk2 165 with 212 engine, non Multipower. It was originally supplied just over the border in Southern Ireland and came from the factory without a cab which was fitted at the dealership. I'll restore it without the cab for summer use!

    I rotary hoed our crops with a MF165 Gas. It was our landlord's tractor. That was before we bought our JD3010 for rotary hoeing. That was in about 1969-1970, and I was 11-12 years old.

    Nice job John you did in that 65 and Mr. Taylor is pretty good too, I own one of those but mine does not look like anything close to yours, mine is still a working beast with almost 50 or 60 years on it, the big difference is that mine is diesel power and sure,like you put it, I do hay and minor farm work with it, like hauling dirt to fix inside roads, mowing pastures, hauling hay square bales in trailer just minor stuff like that, I'm so happy with it that never gonna get rid of it, it will die with me, who ever goes first, hahaha, great job guys, later.

    65 was/is my favorite. Tractor sales bloke tried to tell me the 165 was identical. I don't think so, feels quite different to sit on, don't know why.

    I have one. It was my Dad's. Unfortunately for it my brother ran it and he never put anything back into it, so it's about all used up. I was using it to plow & disc but now it only runs a cheap brush hog.

    Nice but MF's of that era where a tremendous power take off tractor but weren't much with heavy tillage a little light and that multi power transmission was a death trap if you weren't aware of the fact that if you're in multi power when you start down hill you're free wheeling out of control.
