@@edwinvonborstel3405 Da Nang is safe and Vietnam in general. But Danang as a place to retire is a meh. I do not like it. It is only a gateway going to Hoi An. They are trying to gentrify it but their beaches is not that great. Even beaches in Hoi An are not good. Again vietnam food and Hoi An for the win for me. Hanoi and Saigon is ok.
Deciding which of the 2 countries to retire in is difficult. I have been to the Philippines 5 times, soon to be 6 but so far have never seen a city I think would be good for me. Last year i spent 5 nights in Bangkok and 10 nights in Da Nang and I was so impressed with Da Nang and even though I was not thinking of moving there, I could see myself been very happy there. I could imagine riding a push bike down by the sea, playing golf, spending time in the Gym and exploring more of Vietnam. I loved the city, the people, the coffee and the delicious food and having a lovely beach there makes it ideal.
As a Filipino, Vietnam has left a lasting impact on me. Despite its troubled history, the country's remarkable economic growth and stability truly stand out. On the other hand, the Philippines still faces various challenges in terms of development and security. Vietnam, however, seems like the perfect place for a peaceful retirement due to its potential for long-term stability. It's worth mentioning that the Philippines heavily relies on rice imports from Vietnam, which raises concerns about food security. Additionally, the different approaches taken by the two countries in handling the Covid-19 pandemic highlight their contrasting strategies and how their leaders prioritize their people. While the Philippines can be a suitable retirement option for those with substantial savings, Vietnam appears to be a more appealing choice for middle-class retirees.
The Philippines is still a 3rd world poverty country because of rampant corrutpion, that is killing the country from progressing and shunning away major investors, major companies, most are flocking to Vietnam and Thailand. The Philippines main export is slave labor, it imports 99% of products are from China who dumps nothing but garbage food to the Philippines.
All very good points -- except Covid. VN also screwed up big time with Covid and lockdowns. The vaxx was a huge scam, and mandatory injections caused great harm over much of the world.
Philippine has an advantage about speaking English compare to Vietnam.Food and Cultures are so completely different. But for investing on property that Philippine is better.😊
Dan - I was sitting in a cafe today in Saigon trying to get some work done. Some people next to me were yapping and I thought "Boy, it's nice to not be able to understand them." Glad it's not just me!
I've spent the last 10 years in SE Asia, mostly between the Philippines and Vietnam, , Vietnam is considerably cheaper, safer, and better food, by far. . The level of begging and scamming is also much worse in the Philipines. The Philippine's advantage is easier vis and english. Other than that, its Vietnam for the win
@@kippsguitar6539 I’m not saying that it’s as good as Switzerland I’m just comparing it to the Philippines. Philippines is much more Third World than Vietnam.
Im sure & remmember this man, 02 years ago he said he had Vietnamese fiance... so much love Vienam, everything about Vietnam is great. After boken up with her( she 's from Ben Tre province) The fresh woman may kick him out of her life.... so now he said hate Vietnam, third world.... say bad about my country, haha! Please come back to the Developed country then go to Southeast Asean again untill you find the new and fresh innocent girl again. That time will you promote Vietnam tourism again like you did???my friend Kippsguitar xxx😅😂😊, see you 😝
I've been in PH for 8 years but when I visited Vietnam, I really like the Country! The cost of living was really cheap! And tons of choices of Food than PH! and the food in Vietnam is way cheaper compared to PH! The only thing is the Language of Vietnam is quite difficult to learn😂 But then again, Vietnam still growing, and when the country progresses, Definitely everything goes up too.
Hello I like this vlog, but for me your vlog about Da Nang is excellent. During socialism in Eastern Europe we had many Vietnamese people work in my country Bulgaria. I do have good memory and positives' about them. Like your patience in the vlogs! Thank you
Appreciate the perspective you have! I have been to both places and I can say the point you made about healthcare in Vietnam is absolutely correct! Going back next week HCMC! Cheers!
I've traveled and lived in many different countries, one thing I can say is, yes some countries have better food, have better infrastructure and may be a little cheaper, but one thing I can say is the way the people treat you, and how friendly the people are and how social they are and welcoming and warm and helpful to complete strangers. The Philippines wins by a landslide, hands down. Most places I've traveled the people tolerate you and it shows, and they don't want you to live there long term, the Philippines and Panama are two places where you can feel at home and the people will look after you, Philippines is a great home base
@VagabondAwake ha long bay and Nha Trang Bay, very beautiful spots , if you haven't been to these places you should definitely go there, I visited here right before the pandemic
Aaaahhh yes, vegan food options are plentiful in Vietnam. I loved the city of Hanoi, Han An, and Da Nang. In Hanoi there are plenty of ppl near the lake exercising, playing racket ball, volleyball, hand ball, yoga, and so many options to exercise.
Nice video guys. I would add from a 1000ft perspective geared torwards westerners who have never been to SE Asia or left their country before. I would recommend visiting PH 1st because of the english speaking population and christian based society along with abundant nature scenery. However for settling down I would recommend VN due to 2 major factors: cuisine & security. So for a win-win scenario coming from an older westerner's point of view, go to PH 1st, marry a younger PH women, then move to VN to retire there. She'll be very happy as she is always a couple hours plane trip away from her large family.
Dan, I could not agree more in regards to language and communication. Having left the corporate world and its culture 3 years ago, there is nothing worse than sitting in a cafe or restaurant and the table next to you are complaining about their job or the people they work with! 😝 Thanks to you both for sharing your Vietnam experience. We're hoping to be in Da Nang in February 2025 for a month or two 😃
Totally agree about the language and communication, Dan. Myself, I would rather be in a more authentic surrounding, where pointing to this or that and simple "thank you"s and smiles are understood. When I was talking with a British friend of mine in Bangkok, I mentioned how marrying a Thai woman could mean she could talk about things with her friends and family right in front of you without you knowing what they're saying. He said, true, but maybe that's a good thing to not understand and not have to be involved with or worry about. So true. :)
A well thought out breakdown for each country. Two incredible countries. Vietnam is now on our list to visit right next to the Philippines, parts of Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. 😊
I can see why you guys liked Da Nang. Lots of vegan restaurants and apartment hotels around. That apartment you found was on a nice quiet street close to everything. My Khe is one of the nicest beaches I have ever seen. Next time you go back there, check out the area on the riverside. A lot less touristy. Nice riverside walks. Probably better during rainy season where you won't get that cold breeze off the ocean. It was only about a 20 minute walk to the ocean and the main tourist area.
Really liking these "compare" videos .. one place to another. Very helpful. I'm still leaning toward Thailand as a final destination, but Vietnam, with the great food and healthy mind-set, etc, has taken a strong #2 on my list. And I haven't even been there yet ha! Thanks!
Vietnam is most friendly people on earth, you can go to any house ask for food or drink they even ask you if want to sleep overnight. You cant not do that in most country.
no you can't...that's bc you're a foreigner and they think you have $$$$..they don't give their own ppl that kind of privilege..what a BS comment and over inflating the ppl to be some kind of angels but when they are really normal ppl.
The ease of Philippines visa was the deciding factor for me. I recently renewed my tourist visa online only having to pay an "express lane" fee. It takes 24 hours or less for approval. I wish the food here was as good as Vietnam though...
Hi qiang and dan as a malaysian and neutral , here are my observations of both. 1. Usually land locked countries are more developed compared to islands. Goods and services flow easily. 2. With software and hardware like time kettle, language barrier becomes lesser in non English speaking countries. 3. If in malaysia a jab cost usd 100, next day the pm must resign. Yes malaysia is top 3 in medical tourism if not no 1. 4. Agree, vietnamese food is healthier. Philippine food (native), is limited in choice. I am not talking about western food offered in Philippines. 5. It is expensive moving around in Philippines. Ferries then buses then planes. Never ending. 6. Americans go there to find girls for relationship in Philippines. Fact. 7. I would say beaches are better in the Philippines if you like beaches and water activities. 8. Traffic - both countries are chaotic.
My 80 year old uncle lives in Da Lat as he likes the cooler climate. Unfortunately he has has to do a boarder run every 3 months as he can only get a visitors visa
I agree with your comments about language. Learn the basics, yes. It simplifies your life as you are in a new place with many things to learn. It also helps protect your privacy from those seeking useful information about you. Plus people are the same wherever you go. You are no better than them and visa versa. The petty talk is the same everywhere and best avoided. I would add that local made coffee in Dalat was amazing.
Great discussion of both countries. My favorite is your opinion about the language: Its so peaceful ,when the people only speak tourist-english! 🙂I agree completely!!!!
@@VagabondAwake In Vietnam, we do not call it a civil war, we call it a war against America. Vietnam would have been at peace in 1954, after the Paris Agreement was signed and there would have been an election with 99% of Ho Chi Minh winning. But America brought bombs and bullets to Vietnam and established a pro-American regime and used money for propaganda, using Vietnamese people to fight Vietnamese people. We would have had peace in 1954 if America had not appeared, so it was just a civil war under American propaganda.
You also have include super nastness of communists. Think boat people, reeducation camps, and the madness of Pol Pot. US had god reasons to fight communism in Indonesia. Was it done well? No. The US failed big time.
You guys are awesome, love your videos, and next winter when it is freezing in western Canada, Northern Alberta I have intention of heading over to Vietnam and the Philippines and if you guys are available for a coffee, would love to meet up with you.
The Philippines is archepelagic country more than 7,000 islands with stunning beaches and natural beauty of nature which is included in the 7 wonders of nature in world.
I am Vietnamese and I have to say Philippines do have stunning beaches but scenery is just one of many factors that westerners look for. Philippines have a reputation of friendly people, speak English and easy retired visa. The only problem of Philippines is expensive to travel to neighboring countries.
@@thumtlnguyen3626 yes because we are separated from the Asian continent. I do not mind if we have few tourists coming in vis a vis Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore. Malaysia but it is ok. I do not mind keeping those beautiful beaches to ourselves if tourists will not come.
Vietnam is cheaper and nicer!! Would love to live there if am not a Filipino who has a great life in the Philippines. I love the food, history, architecture there.
Nha Trang was my favorite city in Vietnam but I still have Da Nang to check out (China Beach) and Hua Hin. I wish they spoke more English. That's the big advantage of the Philipines, If you are going to live somewhwere, you need to know the language. The phone apps often make mistakes. Nam and Thailand are great to visit. I could have learned Thai, its not that hard but Vietnamese is impossible for me.
good video guys! i would rather learn some of the languages in these countries so you can understand them, even if you dont communicate in said languages.
I agree it's nice not understanding useless conversations 👍👍👍👍👍 I did 2 yrs several places in Phillipines in my late twenties! And Veitnam in my mid 40s .... cars so expensive in Veitnam! Phillipines Thailand more affordable for having a car! Long term living outside city centre! As I'm married now Vietnamese 🇻🇳 I winge cost of car ......🚙
Most expats just do 36 monthly tourist extensions instead of applying for a retirement visa in the Philippines. But you are right, it is not a bad option when compared to other country tourist visas.
I haven't been to Vietnam for a very long time. But I enjoyed it much more than the Philippines. The food wasn't good and I got very sick in the Philippines. I'm planning to move to Thailand at the end of the year. Thanks for your opinion.
Well philippines more nature and abundant of islands with white beaches.. i like philippines that no tourist.. so am happy all expat live in vietnam and thailand😂
Philippines overtook Vietnam in 2023 as fastest rising economy in SEA. Lots of projects in the NCR to help with infrastructure and urban planning. All those other things like rent, food, utilities....are all fairly low depending on where you are
Useful video, thank you! 🙏👍 Three questions: 1. Which of these two countries is more safe, less people trying to scam foreigners, less ATM fraud, more honest police, etc. Who basically wins for overall personal/economic safety?; 2. Which country has a more tourist-friendly infrastructure (credit cards widely accepted, lower ATM fees, higher max USD equivalent cash withdrawl limit at ATMs, better transit networks connecting cities, mobile phone pricing/coverage, etc.? Which is basically more convienient for tourists?; 3. Which country has better sanitation and less pollution/litter?
Dude, it's funny what you said about conversations that annoy you in coffee shops. That happened to me this morning. Never thought of a language barrier that way.
I have been in both countries for the last 2 years. I like people in both countries but Filipinos are friendlier, maybe because they can speak English. But for living, I prefer Vietnam because services are better. I wish I could speak the language because Vietnamese are nice also but there is a language barrier.
Hi Dan I have been following you for few weeks your information is very helpful and real I have been travelling since 2018 I am now in Portugal I. Want to go to Vietnam but I am not clear about if they tax my social security pension from the USA any advice or guidance thanks
I am not an accountant, but not a single expat in Vietnam ever complained to me about taxes. In many countries of the world, it is not until you spend more than 180 days per year there that they begin taxing you. But do ask an accountant before making any permanent decisions.
Could you comment on the immunization requirements for se Asia including Philippines? Most important if they have waivers for any jabs they require??? We want to slow travel but not if vaccines are part of the requirement Thanks in advance, we love your content Joe and Jenny

I've followed you for years and your videos are the best. But the downside is I'm 64 -- way older than you. I'm just getting started, don't know how long I have and like a kid in a candy store, so many countries, so little time. Where to start. I especially enjoyed this video but I didn't hear you say which one YOU preferred? Did I miss it? Will you ever settle down in one of the places you've been. Funny if after all of this you end up in a basement in Oregon. I like slow travel but in time that may be too much and the permanent visa issues worry me. I know I sound ancient just reading this! aarrgh. Thanks for your time and all you do.
I love both countries, Vietnam for food and easy travel and easy access to neighbor countries. I love the Philippines for its varied landscape, English speaking friendly people.
Thank you for all the information , the Grab taxis app need to have a credit card already connected to your phone like Uber before you order a taxi or can you pay in cash when taxi takes you to your destination ? Thank you
Yes. If you do not connect Grab to your credit card (which have done and had no problems) you can pay cash on arrival. Just remember to have exact change or close because drivers don't always have excat change.
Comparing Vietnamese food with Philippine food is easy... from all Asian food, Philippine food belongs to the worst. I've never tasted such blend food like in the Philippines. The best Philippine food I ever ate was in Japan. I think they have had too much influence from Europe and USA. I don't know Vietnamese food very well, but from what I see in the vlogs about Vietnam, it looks delicious. Even more delicious than Thai food.
Thai and Vietnamese food are top notch. I love the spice that Thai food brings but, god damn, it can reign hell on my insides. Yeah you are dead on about Philippino food .... it's no mystery why you rarely see it outside of the Philippines :/
@@thehohnstead Can you believe it? I was a week in Danang, Vietnam. My Thai wife and I had difficulties to find appealing food. Too many "hamburgers" and buns with meat, too many pizza places. The restaurants where we went to were ok, but nothing special. The banh-mi never looked appealing to me. I tried one. It was not bad, but again, nothing special. I think we stick to Thai and Japanese food! Apart from that we had a great week. Oh and the coffee in Vietnam: totally my taste! I like latte, and in Thailand Latte and Cappuccino taste nearly the same and often too strong. But every time I ordered one in Vietnam it was delicious...

Yes, NC is beautiful country. The vegan food choices are a little limited in restaurants on the Philippines. Not a problem for me since I love to cook.
Thank you for all your hard work in regards to helping us to figure out the best places to travel and live.🌹 This concerns me: “Vietnam is among the ten countries most affected by air pollution worldwide.”
@@VagabondAwake Please consider adding air and water quality to your reports. And whether organic produce is readily available at low prices. Filipinos are more hospitable than Vietnamese or other nationalities. Where in the world woukd yiu find people who will invite foreigners to fiestas , weddings and other parties. I prefer Vietnam, but I also love Thailand. It is worth a visit to both if you have time and money. Here is what I do about Health insurance. What I do about health care: vagabondbuddha.com/two-biggest-risks-of-retiring-early-overseas/ Report where I search for health insurance: vagabondbuddha.com/best-health-insurance-for-ex-pats-in-philippines/ Here is the Health Insurance I bought (and scams to avoid): ua-cam.com/video/0leF_BCLVKw/v-deo.html By the way, once you search for health care you will start seeing more offers for health insurance and travelers insurance when you are online. Health insurance is one of the most dynamic or changing industries in the travel world because so many people around the world are deciding to live or retire outside their home country. So do a search every year before you renew to make sure you have the best available for your personal circumstances because new ones come out every few months. Thanks for asking so I could answer this for many people! Dan
I heard you can only lease land in Vietnam, not buy it, we are hoping to leave the UK , there are myself -66, husband Jim 77, my son 40, his wife 30 and 5 children aged under 8. We have our pensions but want a piece of land around 3 acres with a small house that we can build on a "granny annex" for us grandparents, 😀 we have an income between us of £3,000 a month but want to grow our own everything 😉 and trade for what we don't grow ourselves, can you help with advice please, we are English but hate the western attitude, we need our grandchildren out of that system as soon as possible.
Hi Jackie, I am Canadian by birth and have resided in SE Asia for several decades now, primarily Viet Nam. Non Vietnamese are not allowed to own raw land (however laws are becoming easier in that regard) Land is Also decreasing in price, so land lease prices will reflect that. Lom Doung province is an area you should look into, it's the best area for someone from your geographic background. Da Lat, would be a good place to start from... you can spiral out from there (Da Lat is expensive) however it's close to many mountious areas that adventurous westerns are migrating too. 3k a month is a substantial amount of monies to live on here, even in a major city... it's a small fortune in the countryside... Vietnam has upgraded its banking systems vigorously over the years and it is very much first world here in many regards. Vietnam will join the BRICS+ Nations soon and we have become quite independent from the Global North. we are arguably the most stable country in Asia which is why we have become one of the fastest growing economy's in Asia There is pollution issues in Hanio, and since more manufacturers have moved from China to Vietnam (primarily to the province of Dong Nai) Saigon is showing the stress from that, but you will be a long way from any of those big city issues. Spend a year looking around, lots to see and experience. My wife and I spent a few years building a house in Lom Doung and it was a blast... Good luck and fortune to you and your family...
I’m planning my retirement to be in Dumaguete initially. I hope to make it my hub while I explore all the other SE Asian countries for where I will eventually call home. I’m hoping to have all my stateside affairs in order by January 1st 2025. Of course the “Best laid plans” but that’s the target for now
Dumaguete is hihly overrated ...a real disaster. The real estate market is a mess, women are professional golddiger .. STAY AWAY BRO.....Unless yo have monthly income 2000 US dolar minimum
Do you feel the healthcare is better and cheaper in Vietnam vs Philippines? We have a daughter with special needs and in Philippines it’s impossible to find good healthcare for children unless you’re in Manila going to St Expensive Luke’s for it we done with the healthcare system here and looking at Vietnam 3 years and Philippines is not what it’s all hyped up to be especially in healthcare cost and quality
Check out FV hospital in Ho Chi Minh. I had a check up there and it was very modern. If health care is your thing, Thailand and Malaysia are the best in SE Asia, and Malaysia seems cheaper now.
Put aside traveling or retiring subject, if you’re so keen on finding a one-night stand or a short-term relationship partner just to have fun, don’t come to Vietnam, go to Thailand or the Philippines. It is a lot easier in the Philippines and Thailand as people are more open and used to that trend for some time.
11:10. I have the opposite observation/experience. When I'm in a country where I don't understand the language around me, I feel cocooned and isolated. While it might be annoying to hear and understand petty conversations around you, you are part of the scene/community. When you don't understand anything, people talking come off like just noises and you are left alone in your own head. After living there for a while, you feel removed and ... lonely. Language is cultural, not just transactional purpose.

Great video and I am a fellow youtuber in real estate in the US, Phoenix Az . Good job. Simple and trustworthy information. I am thinking about my retirement but I have one setback, congestive heart failure. I want to enjoy my life moving forward and knock on wood, no major setbacks yet but I pay $1400 per month us for healthcare. My highest bill. 5 years from medicare. I spent a month in Thailand and the following year a month in the Phillipines. I found my favorite place in Thailand was Chiang Mai because of the weather but I only spent 10 days there. It was to hot for me in Bangkok and the polution was really bad. Lauguage was more difficult. The Phillipines was much easier but I didn't like the food nearly as much. English speaking made it easy for sure. I just came back from Panama and Medianan Colombia. Mediana is beautiful and has amazing weather but safety is a concern. Panama is great but very pricey. I look forward to a trip to Vietnam. I would only ask for a the best recommendation for healthcare in the area should I have an issue. Do you like DaNang or NaTrang better? Thanks
Be careful of the air in Chiang Mai during the burn season. Just fly south to the islands during that. For a good doctor, I would check with the expats on the Facebook pages for Chiang Mai for a referral. :-) On FB, just search for Chiang Mai expats.

The only thing is the Language of Vietnam is quite difficult to learn😂 But then again, Vietnam still growing, and when the country progresses, Definitely everything goes up too.

We are currently in Vietnam now, and love the rural life, we are retired farmers in the UK. See my other request please
Hi. May I ask which area in Vietnam you decided to stay?
I think Vietnam wins in all areas except visa but as you explained there are work arounds.
Vietnam is now a "young" country. The largest segment of the population is under the age 30.
True. Have you been to Vietnam yet?
@VagabondAwake ha long bay and Nha Trang Bay, very beautiful spots , if you haven't been to these places you should definitely go there, I visited here right before the pandemic

Aaaahhh yes, vegan food options are plentiful in Vietnam. I loved the city of Hanoi, Han An, and Da Nang. In Hanoi there are plenty of ppl near the lake exercising, playing racket ball, volleyball, hand ball, yoga, and so many options to exercise.
So good!
Thanks to you both for sharing your Vietnam experience.
Great advice guys! Will be in Danang in May to celebrate our 43rd wedding anniversary . Thanks again.
Thanks!
I too really like this compare video. A Thailand vs Vietnam video would be awesome. "Dan, the Travel Guy you can Trust"
❤😂Really, cause yu a foreigner that all.Vietnamese people may be only.😅
The ease of Philippines visa was the deciding factor for me. I recently renewed my tourist visa online only having to pay an "express lane" fee. It takes 24 hours or less for approval. I wish the food here was as good as Vietnam though...
whatever food you prefer just go to the market buy and cook. If you want chinese food, go to achinese resto, or viet or thai.
Both are beautiful and friendly but for me Viet Nam cuisine is very delicious!
I totally agree!

I agree with your comments about language. Learn the basics, yes. It simplifies your life as you are in a new place with many things to learn. It also helps protect your privacy from those seeking useful information about you. Plus people are the same wherever you go. You are no better than them and visa versa. Is it weird that I am super happy Vietnam Won the Vietnam war.. Thank god the US did not screw up their amazing culture.
No matter which side won the war it would have been Vietnam winning. It was a civil war. In this case the north won.

Phillipines is a great base.- $10K US retirement visa with some income. You don't loose the money. it is just like a bond. Not a bad option 👌 😂
Most expats just do 36 monthly tourist extensions instead of applying for a retirement visa in the Philippines. But you are right, it is not a bad option when compared to other country tourist visas.

Three questions:
1. Which of these two countries is more safe, less people trying to scam foreigners, less ATM fraud, more honest police, etc. Who basically wins for overall personal/economic safety?;
2. Which country has a more tourist-friendly infrastructure (credit cards widely accepted, lower ATM fees, higher max USD equivalent cash withdrawl limit at ATMs, better transit networks connecting cities, mobile phone pricing/coverage, etc.? Which is basically more convienient for tourists?;
3. Which country has better sanitation and less pollution/litter?

Comparing Vietnamese food with Philippine food is easy... from all Asian food, Philippine food belongs to the worst. I've never tasted such blend food like in the Philippines. The best Philippine food I ever ate was in Japan. I think they have had too much influence from Europe and USA. I don't know Vietnamese food very well, but from what I see in the vlogs about Vietnam, it looks delicious. Even more delicious than Thai food.

Put aside traveling or retiring subject, if you’re so keen on finding a one-night stand or a short-term relationship partner just to have fun, don’t come to Vietnam, go to Thailand or the Philippines.
