I am a big Morisette fan but the guy is right when he said that the Stages Session performance of this song was not live. Sure, Morisette actually sang that song pre-recorded, but before they posted it, they “processed” the audio, i.e. added some echo, adjusted the treble, etc. If they didn’t do that, the performance would sound “flat” just like when she was speaking before the performance.

One of my favorite Broadway memories is seeing the original Broadway cast of Wicked with my daughter. We had a friend of a friend of a cast member who took us backstage after the show. My 9 year old daughter stood center stage holding the broom, we walked past the dressing rooms where Idina, Norbert and Kristin were so kind and took pictures with us. For a long as I live, I will never forget the joy I saw in my actress daughter’s face!

By LIVE also means ... done on camera on a continuous roll, a ONE-TAKE, and with no edits or post-production cuts. Which isn't an easy thing to do.
Elaine Duran does Mariah Carey songs on a LIVE or ONE-TAKE; just like Morissette. Both are Filipinas.

Morissette's fans are so protective of her! I totally get it, BUT they're not taking into account that this song was written for musical theatre. Of course anyone well versed in musical theatre is going to have some "controversial" opinions about her singing this song, since she's singing it in such a pop style. I think it's absolutely gorgeous and beautiful, just wouldn't fly in a production of Wicked ;) Anyone who says anything slightly constructive about her technique tends to get torn down by her fans. Keep doing you, don't let the haters get you down! -From, another reactor who is also in the same boat ;)

I love that her fans come to her defense. And I think Mori is an amazing singer. I get a lot of hate comments though when I say anything constructive, which is the job of a voice teacher. Mori isn't my student, nor do I think she needs any technical help. She's amazing as is. My comments and the comments of others who react to her musical theatre interpretations point out that while her singing is AMAZING, it wouldn't work on Broadway where there are approved riffs / stylistic things you have to do. That does not negate the fact that she is amazing. Sorry you feel so negatively about me and my channel! I just know how to identify and appreciate talent when i see one which is precisely why i suggested 2 of her performances with a full orchestra minus the run and rifts. Most of us are a graduate of something but that does not give us an automatic right to whatever. People establish and bulk up on their credentials to attain that certain level of credibility which sorts out the good from the best.

the thing is, it's not an audition but a gig to showcase her vocals, she was just starting her career as a POP singer in this video. if you knew that audience in the Philippines expect powerful punching vocals from new singers then you'd understand why she sang it that way.

Sorry. You cannot make a comparison between the two. Idina is performing to a certain audience at a theater, with the proper setting and sound equipment. Morissette's seems to be recorded by a fan? and is obviously performing to a more laid back audience/setting. Her latest recording, even if it wasn't in front of a live audience, I find to be better than Idina's. Hopefully after the pandemic, Mori will perform it live in concert, in the exact same way as her live feed, with the proper recording equipment.

You need to make the comparison using Morissette's latest live performance of the song. She is incredible. Idina is great too - she has the advantage of being an actual experienced musical theatre actress. But if Morissette keeps developing, Idina better watch out.

Them singing to the same song, you should expect differences because each singers have different background and training. I liked the comment about doing runs on this song (don't - I agree) and how casting directors don't like it. Cool bit of info.
For requests, could you react to Jessie Mueller "Used to be Mine" but the rehearsal or pre-show press(?) (I just like it better, don't know why), Lea Salonga singing I'm Still Hurting (again the rehearsal footage, not the show footage, as it felt more raw), Kristen Chenoweth singing something LOL, Bring Him Home sung by 4 of the best, Colm Wilkinson, Alfie Boe, John Owen Jones and someone else. I think there is a video here of them singing this together.

You miss the point. Live performance is about stagecraft. The studio setting doesn't let a singer show connection to or reaction from an audience. Marc's videos are 'Musical THEATRE Coach', not 'vocal coach'. So he had to choose a version where Morrisette sang IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE to gauge her stagecraft.

For sure morisette can give a serous look when performing in a musical stage and can give all your wishes gestures and posture which u wanted her to project in d defying gravity song.

Interesting analysis of both performances. That being said could you please do a comparison video between Johnny Manuel singing I have nothing by Whitney Houston at his audition on the Americas Got Talent competition in the year 2017 and Dalton Harris singing this same song on the x factor 2018 competition? I’m a huge idina and morrisette fan but if we are looking. Solely on the “musical theater” aspect… I do think idina connects better. But morrisette sings better.

Ok sir I may be the biggest Mori fan this side of the West(Im in the US) (I have seen her twice live. This young lady is real!) Liked and Subbed!
There's been so much confusion surrounding her latest upload as live or not live. The Pandemic has really done a number on artists doing gigs etc. They've really had to get creative. Normally this company brings artists like her together in a live almost club like setting. (She's one of several artists involved)in this case ,that was just not possible. All the songs were recorded at home one take live. The sponsoring company then did post edit for audio only obviously someone in their home recording will need some audio balance. (This information comes straight from her in a live she did talking about the performances, as there are 6 in all) I wanted to clarify that confusion.
I was reading the comments, and I see people trying to take little shots at her and mischaracterize what you said here. My Goodness your takeaway was huge. Idina is THE Elphaba and you put this young phenom as the closest to her that you have seen! That's a MASSIVE compliment and this was a performance from 3 years ago on a fan cam ! Musical theater fans (I consider myself one) have seen hundreds performing this song over the years, I'm sure you have as well. To say this is up there with the best by someone who knows what they're seeing, no argument from me! Thank you for taking the fans request and giving her a chance. I'd love to see more of her here in the future!
Edited to add..I saw you have already reviewed the Legend that is Lea Salonga here. Lea is a huge supporter of Morissette! In a recent interview she called Morissette's talent "ridiculous ". I agree with Lea 1000%!

Morisette fans never ask for any sort of comparison, though it was an interesting watch.. But see, you just compared a then-16-years-seasoned-professional-Tony-award-winning-actress Idina to a then-2-year-budding-pop-singer Morisette. Hardly seems fair, but STILL, you putting it as a DRAW is a huge compliment! THANK YOU! @@Githerax You miss the point too. Mori's set was an intimate small venue vs Idina's huge concert orchestra venue. Mori's performance wasn't about reenacting the show, and still, she sang it better note for note than Idina did. Not to mention, when Idina did her version, she'd already been a seasoned pro, while Morissette, at the time, was just starting her career and still developing her voice. Compare it to the Stage Sessions version that came out this year, there is NO contest.

Marc probably shouldn't react to anything Pinoy related because even the slightest critique brings out the condescension and pitchforks from Filipino fans. You guys are embarrassing.
    1. He's a musical theatre coach. His critiques are more on the stage approach. He wasn't shitting on her vocal technique, which she's very good at!
    2. He chose the video where she performed it in front of a live audience. Not LIVE as in it was being filmed live.

Acting wise, Idina has the edge bec. she played the role in the musical. It was but natural for her to instinctively act that way. Morisette was playing to the local audience not really mindful of how it was acted on stage, which is why it was rendered in a pop kind of way.

Have you seen and heard Lea Salonga sing Defying Gravity? It was in one of her concerts several years ago, and I assure you she can give Idina a run for her money just as Lea did with Let It Go. I like them both but Lea for me is more blessed with a less shrill voice than Idina. And compared with many musical theatre actors, Lea is one of those few whose voice did not “age” much.
