  • Six years worth of balloons found in the forests and fields of Cape Cod, turned into a three day sculpture in Sandwich, MA.
When I removed the balloons, I found that, underneath, the ants were feasting. Perhaps the creation of a more humid microclimate around the dead trunk brought with it the conditions that made the wood more palatable to ants and termites and bugs who feast on dead trees.
As much as I enjoy this dead tree, I'd be happy to see it return to the loam, decomposing to let the trees grow stronger and reduce the flammable fuel of an unmanaged landscape. The balloons may have helped this process along.
Anyways, stop buying Mylar balloons, those shiny ones from Dollar Tree whose desires to escape begin the second you grab hold of the ribbon.
