USAF Band WWII Holiday Flashback

  • Our 2015 holiday musical flash mob at Union Station in Washington, D.C. honors our nation’s WWII veterans and gives the performance a vintage look! This "pinks and greens" WWII era uniform earned its nickname from the pairing of the dark olive-drab wool coat with lighter drab trousers, which had a pinkish hue.
This flashmob features an extraordinary dance troop from NYC (choreographed by Jessica Hartman), and a cameo appearance by Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James!

Wonderful. My father played both clarinet & saxophone in an army band during WW2. He also knew how to play the violin. He played in a string orchestra for twenty five years until he was 100. He passed last year or made his transition as I like to say at age 102. He blessed many with his music.

These guys, whatever they do, they always give it a 101%. They could have done this in their current uniforms and still would have been fantastic, but to actually dress in their Army Air Corps uniform - perfection to details. That lead singer, the looks, the voice, seems like she traveled through a time machine from the late 40's.
As expected, the performance and the musical arrangement is impeccable. USAF Band is truly the best military band in the planet.

Dad left for the Army in 1942 and the sad lonely times begin for her until Dad returned in late 1945. They loved to listen to Guy Lombardo every New Years every year for the next 77 years together. I loved to watch them dance when they where younger. Happy News Years America. Thanks AF.

As it can be remembered, the original US Air Force band was directed by the famous band leader Major Glen Miller who disappeared over the English Channel during WWII. The new Glen Miller Air Force Band came marching-in one unforgettable evening when I was a new Airman at Keesler Air Force back in the mid-50’s. The Base Commander led the march in front of the band with flags flowing and the band following him into Arnold Hall for the most sentimental musical concert I ever attended. We still had a lot of WWII veterans in active service, including the Base Commander and the whole evening turned into a tearjerker!!! Unforgettable to see so many people that sacrificed so much to keep us free, in one building.

I watch this every year since I first found it on UA-cam. I love that, a little more than half way through, those strains of Moonlight Serenade. This is doubtless a tribute to big band leader Glenn Miller. During WWII he served in England as a US Army Air Forces band leader, entertaining troops there, especially at US military convalescent hospitals, attaining the rank of major. In December 15 1944, Major Miller boarded a plane to fly Paris in advance of his band. The plane disappeared over the English Channel.

+Alton Accola Just like how they record live concerts or live albums and shows. Microphones all over. Singers got their individual microphones as well as most of the individual instruments. At 1:41 you see the oboist with the microphone wire hanging from his oboe and a transmitter at his belt. The double bass player and the guitarist attached wires to their instruments before they started. The brass section were literally dragging their microphone stands, violins are equipped with remote mics as well, and so forth. At 4:44 you see a guy on the far right sitting down in front of his computer controlling the sound for the sound box.
Some mics are so small these days you can hardly see them. The wires and transmitters are usually concealed on their clothing. You'll be surprised when you go to a live broadway show and learn that the actors/singers mics are attached to a strand of their hair and you wont notice it unless you stand right in front of them and look for it.

To all the people who commented with something like, "They should be defending instead of entertaining..." etc. Obviously, you don't have a career or anything steady or stable in your lives because any sensible person knows that everyone needs a release. If one is consumed by one thing 24/7 without a release, everything suffers. Music is a great release. Sports is another. And like anyone who has ever done something musical or athletic, practice with no goal eventually becomes worthless. Hence, performances and games. This group is putting their collective efforts on display and spreading cheer. If you can't do the same, be silent. Or YOU get up and STAND A POST!

Those are US Army Air Corp uniforms from WWII. Due to USAF regs, their rank must be shown at all times when in uniform, meaning the rank blazings on their uniforms are accurant to their service rank. They are based out of Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. This is a small contingent of their unit. They are sent all around the globe as ambasadors. I don't know why I am saying all of this. I guess I am just proud of them.

@@Jo-un6es Duh, This IS a USAF band. Don't you think they would have ALL the reference material they could EVER need to make sure the uniforms are "Period Correct"? BTW, the USAF Bands often get waivers for Uniform requirements for the purpose of enhancing the spirit of the show and the mission of providing good entertainment. Therefore, rank insignia is not always required too be displayed. An example would be the ladies that are dancing in civilian clothes.
Also, these USAAC uniforms were originally adopted from the US Army uniforms that is why it was the US Army Air Corps.

@@TEAMERICA96 I'm not sure I understand your question? Are you saying you dont think it was filmed where it says? I was only pointing out that the "Airmen of Note" who I think are a large component of the musicians here are from Bolling because someone mentioned the musicians here were based at Wright Pat.. The airmen of note do regular free concerts at the Reagan building downtown too and I've gotten to hear them a few times.

Unless you've served in the U.S. military you couldn't truly understand what the USAF band means to this country, superb music whilst serving their country at the same time!

I disagree. I am a patriot that loves my country. I just am not allowed to serve with talent. I must sever with my voice. I am disabled.
