I've started using brown paper lunch bags. Cut a hole in the bottom (à la a cloth hay bag), stuff it with hay, and clip it up against the side of the cage. I've never had any of my pigs climb inside of it, and it doesn't last long enough to get dusty. When the piggies are done destroying it, toss it out and put in a new one. 😊

My favorite Hey container is the Snak Shak log. It is chewable but I have found when I keep it full of hay it is almost never really chewed on. Also it is tall enough that they using to stretch their backs when they reach up for hay coming out of the top. The log is not long enough for them to fit their whole body inside but one state to the hay from inside they can use it as a tunnel. There butt sticks out and they don't usually pee inside of it.

I use a Rubbermaid food storage container. I cut a hole in one side of it then zip tied it to the outside of their cage with the hole facing up and the opening of the container against the bars. I put the hay in the top and my guineas pull it through the bars. Works great, doesn’t take up any space inside their enclosure and it cost me pretty much nothing! 👍👍

I'm about to try the same thing with a cardboard box. With it on the outside of the cage they can't get inside it, get stuck, or soil the hay.

I've had my guinea pigs for just two weeks and realized a few days ago I wasn't having to fill their hay feeder very often so I put a large handful in a bowl and WOW they are eating probably 95% of it. I'm so happy it didn't take me long to realize that. The mess is worth it to me because I know they're getting adequate amounts of hay now. Another plus is they seem to only have one spot they pee in....

I fixed one of the cons of the c&c grid rack by making it wall to wall so they can't use the open sides (2 grids long in my 2x4 enclosure) and keeping it on an angle so they can't climb over the front also I can set it and forget it because the hay rack is large enough to last three or four days without needing to be refilled

I use a cat litter box I cut down for an opening, and yes remelted the plastic so it's smooth. I line it. Have the pellet bowl, and water dispensers set up into it too. So daily I change the hay. It doubles as a litter box, but they always poop/pee where they eat no matter what you do. So with 4 piggy's I change it daily. It does wast some hay, but I find it just as cheap as using paper bedding in the food area anyway.

Love this video thank you Abby . I gave up on hayracks when I found a piggy with her head stuck through the bars when I first started keeping them. In UK I keep scrolling through Amazon but can't find anything really suitable. I use a snakshack ( thanks to Scotty and Saskia) placed on a tea tray with slightly sloping sides. It's easy for me to pick up clean and refill. Also I had a small plastic dog bed I used as a hidey upturned, they loved sitting on top, now I use it the right way up lined and filled with hay and easy just to pick up and refill during the day, they still make a mess of course, but it's a bit easier to de hay the fleece before I wash it. I hope all your herd are well at the moment, I learn so much from your videos and just plain enjoy them🤗🐹🐱

I use the old "grid style" you use to use. When I had babies I had an issue with babies jumping into it so I took some cardboard and zip tied a barrier to the ends so it would be shut. As all of them are adults I don't have a problem with any of them jumping into the grid. My senior Trixie is still doing well eating from it. I also will do a hay pile in front of the grid. It's messy and wasteful but love when the bury themselves in it. :)

I use a hay rack that came with my cage. It hangs flush to the top of the cage so pigs cant climb in them. I do have to apply to clips to the back to keep the hayrack in place as they can bump it off otherwise. For floortime I put down haypiles, and once they have chewed up the guineadad cardboard houses and they are on their last legs I will fill the house with hay and my piggies LOVE to play in it.

I have a coroplast hay rack from the guinea pig cage store. I stopped using them for awhile because my piggies got territorial over them. I even had two to prevent this but it didn't work. I started using a snak shak log stuffed with hay and that worked great but recently one of them started chewing up a lot and I was worried about him getting bladder stones again. It also got pretty smelly. I brought out the coroplast rack again since one of my original piggies had passed away and I have a new piggy and I feel like these two get along better. This time though I used one rack and I cut the holes larger in the front and added opening on the side. Been working great.

I have a hay rack that i then put a pile under it. My cage has a smaller end section with a bit of a lip which I put puppy pads down while the rest is fleece and luckily, so far, they tend to just make a mess over on the puppy pad side haha.
Despite having a nice fleece area with two extra fleece pads for sleeping, one of my piggys still likes to just sleep in the messy hay or sleep in his own toilet tray :/
each to their own I guess!

edit: also none of the hay falls on the fleece so the pigs never waste hay, they always eat all of it.

Hay Pile all the way. One of the girls enjoys the hay-shower (she would come right beneath my hand full of new hay so hays will sprinkle on top of her).
Cons of the rest: They cost extra. You need to make a research if the holes in those hay bags or boxes are safe for guinea pigs. Nobody wants their piggies choking. Cons of all: all of them will make a mess anyway.

I haven’t got my piggies yet, but I’ve set up the cage with a hay bag upstairs and a hay room (container I put a door hole in) downstairs. There is a hay bag in the hay room so they will have clean hay if they decide to soil the hay in the ‘room’. So they’re technically getting a hay pile and hay bags. I’ll see how they do with this when I get them.
Thank you for the tips. I may make some hay boxes to have in case I don’t like the bags. Is there a particular type of wood that is better? Obviously not treated.

I too have been trying to find the perfect hayrack one that my guinea pig won’t be able to pull all the hay out and waste it because I hate wasting hay . I don’t know if anyone else is facing this problem but no matter what I do there seems to be always wasted hay. my one guinea pig is worse than the other ones. is there anything I can do or is this just a part of being a guinea pig mom?

Wasted hay happens, nothing is perfect. I throw out soiled hay all the time sadly but I want to make sure they have plenty so their teeth stay good and their tummies happy.

I use Oxbow orchard grass and timothy. It never says what cut it is.

I was having issues with my piggies peeing all over the big pile of hay i had in the cage and i would end up having to throw it out, so i just recently made a hay rack out of c&c grids (they can’t get in it, but they can get as much hay as they want out, it confusing to explain the design but i found how to make it on youtube, it’s made of 4 grids). it seems to be working good, i just made it this morning though! they love it so i hope it goes well :)
