For the past eight months, I've been using your tips for running further and longer. In the past, 3.5 miles was my longest run. Wanting to run further and longer has taken me on a journey and commitment to see this through; not knowing if I would succeed or fail. Well today, at 60 years old, I just completed my first Half Marathon at a pace of 8:26. Was wearing the Endorphin 2 Shield- which I love! Thanks for the motivation and knowledge that has helped me run further and longer; without injury.

QD: as an owner of the ultra glide‘s and the Speedgoats, I would half to stick with the Speedgoat 5’s for two main reasons. Grip and stability. As far as grip goes the ultra glide‘s do just fine and rocky terrain and even wet rocks. But they do not do well once you switch over to soft packed dirt and other loose material. Also as a runner who is 6’5”, I feel very unstable in the ultra glide‘s on technical terrain but have never felt that in the speedgoats. I currently use the ultra glides for hard packed dirt and gravel fire roads and the Speedgoats for when it gets more technical.

Great to see two amazing options. I currently have the UGs and have been so pleased. I just hope Salomon fixes the lace storage issue on the tongue in a future version, it's always temporarily annoying.

LOOOOOOVE this battle, thank you SO MUCH for doing it. VERY pertinent to me, as I tackle several 50k events this year. I already have the UG and ❤❤ it. I'm SUPER excited about the SG5 because you keep saying it's got a lot of EVO qualities, and I wanted that shoe so badly! I will DEFINITELY be buying (at least one pair of) the SG5 when it comes out... and really really look forward to pairing them together when training for my difficult trail 50k in August 🙌🏼

Absolutely perfect timing. I was looking at the hoka for a trail marathon. However now I need to check out Salomon. 230 lbs slower runner so cushion and time on feet matter. Thanks for a great review. 👍 I am going try both on at the store for a comparison

I just took my Ultra Glides over 500 miles. Probably the best shoe for all terrain that I've ever wore. Lugs are worn of course but I am still wearing them for easy training long runs. I wore them all winter on the ice and snow packed roads here. Just enough grip and lots of cushion. Just a great shoe all around.

Hey, I had the comment of the day! This was a battle I was really looking forward to. I've kinda stepped away from the SG for a couple years still hanging onto a pair of SG2s that still have a lot of life left (my 3rd pair I think?). Both of these shoes are fantastic to take to 100 miles; but I was finding the energy return of the UG to be beneficial and less "sloggy" in those latter hours that the SG can feel. Still, looking forward to getting the SG5 someday.

Seth I wanted to do a shout out to you in regards to your shoe reviews and fantastic training tips
I started running again 6 months ago after a very long break and tonight broke the 2hr mark for the half marathon distance 1hr52mins so bloody happy and it is thanks to your inspiration.
I did it in my new Clifton8s which I just purchased to replace my first Clifton7s that started to tear at the material edge( I am still happy with them getting 400kms out of them and I was about 90kgs when I started)
I also picked up a pair of Endorphin Pro 2s at the same time which I am added to my rotation for speed days currently but want to get comfortable in them and race in them come race day.
Again Thankyou for all the tips and advice.
Next shoe will be a train shoe to add to mix up my training
    Onwards and Upwards

soo thrilled to see the SG5! I'd love to get a pair of the Salomons but here in Eastern China Vibram still is the best outsole for trail running. So as much as I love the design of the Salomon UG I'd have to choose the SG5 for longer distances races here.

QD: I tried both the speedgoat 4 and UltraGlide the last time I bought trails shoes. For me it just plain came down to how each fit my foot with the UltraGlide being better. Don’t accept a bad personal fit for your foot just because the score is high. Any weird fit issue will come back to haunt you deep into a run

    • @fuzzyduckize
      @fuzzyduckize 2 роки тому +1

@@carsonwong4144 maybe, but really it came down to the ultra’s fitting like a glove and the speedgoats having one tiny tiny spot that didn’t feel quite right on my foot. They’re so similar you can’t go wrong, for me it just came down to the final fit!

    • @davidjaniszewski6653

@Carson Wong The toe box on my UG is much more rounded vs the SG4 was too pointed and smashed my toes. I wouldn't call the UG a wide shoe at all, just fit my toes much better. Too bad because I wanted the speed goat 4 because of its Vibram megagrip and more aggressive lugs.
So far the ultra glides have offered me just as good of grip in real world use compared to my sense ride 4s, topo mtn racer2s, Salomon xultra3 low, altra lone peak 5s.

Speedgoat 5. Based on my experiences with 3, 4 and people’s take on the 5, it sounds like it got better. To me the series has taken every season and accumulated so much mileage, while only slightly changing in feel throughout temperature changes from -25C to 40C and accumulated mileage.

  • @davidgross7972

I have not owned a SG before, but I would buy the SpeedGoat 5 first. I like the more aggressive tread versus the UltraGlide's smoother lugs, which suits my type of trail running better. Also, Salomon shoes tend to fit narrow for my wide feet but Hoka seems to be doing better in that department as I can fit in a Mach 4 regular width with one size up. Thanks for the battle!

Ran in the EVO Speedgoat for a long time but did my last 100k in the Ultra Glide and will be wearing them at Black Canyon this weekend. I still think the Ultra Glide is more forgiving for slightly wider feet (crazy to say for Salomon) especially as your feet swell in the second half of a long race, but that rocker technology in the EVO Speedgoat was just incredible. I enjoyed both. Although, I'm hesitant to buy the Ultra Glide again as that lacing system is challenging to deal with and limits the security of the lockdown. Just my opinion. If an Ultra Glide 2 comes out for the summer racing season it would be interesting to re-test the Speedgoat 5 vs any improvements Salomon puts out.

Used two pairs of Speedgoat 3 and maybe it is just my feet, but they are my favorite shoes ever, also have a EVO Speedgoat for racing. I just bought Ultraglide and they are great. I believe most difference is in outsole and midsole - they might a bit better for commuting and harder surfaces, but they lack the softness for long long runs and they do not perform well in the muddy conditions.

Great battle. I´d buy UG, primarily for 2 reasons: 1) I´ve only run in Hoka roadies, but based on those shoes, I´d question Hoka durability over trails, and 2) I understand UG uses same midsole compound (pwrsurge?) as Pulsar, which is, in a word, amazing. I also have to give partial credit to UG for coming out as a new shoe, versus the Speedgoat, which is in its 5th iteration.

I bought the Salomon Ultra Glides as needed some cushioned off road trainers. They are good, like full suspension bike plush ride vs speedy hardtail. I find they just absorb everything, whilst not being too heavy that they feel clumpy. I was able to run quickly offroad, or put in some nice long runs, generally, and ok on fairly technical trails. But, but , but, but !! The outsole has nearly worn out completely and I have only run about 250k in them! This is the very first time I have done this with a pair of any sort of running shoes, road or trail. I am a light weight runner (66kg), and am light on my feet. Also the cushion feels far less energetic, somewhat collapsed and the shoes are more sluggish as a result, I relegated them to slower runs already, but they will be retired very shortly to walking and street wear as the tread has almost worn smooth in large patches. After a great start indeed, I'm now looking for a replacement after only 250k. At the time I bought them I was considering the speedgoat or Evo Speedgoat. with a Vibram outsole, and Seth's great Midsole ride score, and high comfort score, after the Ultras wearing out so fast, I am seeing the contest between them going to the Speedgoats, just based on the great user reviews of them, Hokas rep is general and my Hoka Torrents Vibram outsole, which has no wear after many hundreds of k's offroad.

Didn't have the opportunity to run in the SG5, but havin' run in the 3, 4 and EVO, I was definitely looking for a shoe with the same cushioning for ultras and a better stability, and I have to say that the Ultra Glide is just that. The fact I could size down from 9.5 Hoka size to 9 in the UG helped even more with the locked in and stable feel. That being said, I know I will end up with a pair of Speedgoat 5 anyway, you know, just to try it 😅

Speedgoat 5 vs. Evo Speedgoat, of course. Though I suppose that's more of a comparison than a shoe battle.

Another great video Seth! Being a road and track runner but living in Scotland I use trails and the hills for my easy runs and steady days. Getting out into the hills is a great change not only for the mind but for my legs, taking a break from the tarmac and track! I have always run in Nike trail running shoes due to the comfort I think they provide like the Wildhorse range however, recently started to run in both Salomon trail shoes like the Speedcross range and have found that although a little comfort is lost you gain so man other features I feel other shoe companies don't include in their shoes. Salomon for me has great ankle support, breathability, lug depth, lacing system is fab and I feel the durability of the shoe is fantastic.
As a fairly seasoned runner for the track and road finding the Salomon trail running shoes for my trail runs was a blessing I hope others can enjoy and discover for themselves!
Happy running all and thanks again for the constant hard work Seth it doesn't go unnoticed!
    Cheers from Scotland !

Maybe the stability is an item that you can add to the evaluation (more than just stability/neutral shoes).
In this case the plateform of the Hoka seems to be a bit larger than the Ultra Glide so maybe a little bit more stable (and less precise).

I would try both on but trust the scoring system and buy the UG if both felt good. I’ve always wondered as a rural runner ( I run 60% rough gravel, 20% road, 20% dirt) if maybe I should try trail shoes to train in. My last 4 pairs of shoes have been mach 4s taken to about 400 miles. I think maybe I pay to much attention to foot placement to avoid bigger rocks.

My experience with the Ultraglide has been quite disappointing. While the fit and comfort are great, the amount of overlays make them a water puddle in humid conditions, any moist/water just stays inside which results in the insoles slipping around. I ran a 70km/3500m in them and had to remove the insoles after 2hrs… Also after 55/60k, the midsole caved. No more cushion whatsoever (seems to be an issue reported by others). So a move in the right direction and hopefully they’ll fix these things in the rev 2. In the meantime I’ll be looking forward for the Pulsar trail or SG5.

From extremely rocky terrain in Santa Barbara, to a 6000 elevation 50k, and even a fast trail half marathon it just shows up no questions asked. I have about 100 miles on a pair of Ultra Glides, and am on my third pair of Speedgoats. If I had to choose one, I'd keep the Speedgoats. Which aren't perfect, and I hope the 5's fit me better. Because I love, love, love the fit of the Salomons, which is why I keep buying them (on my third pair of Sense Rides, too). But they're just not as cushioned, and the lugs are too small for steep, technical stuff. Plus, the Speedgoats are much more durable. I use them for backpacking, too, and they can handle anything I throw at them. The Ultra Glides couldn't handle all that as well.

I've been a big fan of Salomon shoes for years, but for some reason, ultra glide gave me a worth ever experience! I know it's such great shoes but they disappointed me! I'm going to sell it for 80 dollars and I only used it once for about 45 minutes. If you live in the Us and are interested in that shoe size 10 please let me know.

Overall like the ultra glide but huge disappointment in the outsole durability. I have less than 100 miles on them and the lugs have practically warm completely off. I have seen lots of reports of this online as well. That said, can’t wait for the Speedgoat 5.

Everyone keeps comparing speedgoat 5 to the EVO speedgoat. Let's see that battle. Have to reach deep in the archives for that EVO. Will be very interesting to see the similarities between the two with several years in between the two models.

I wish Salomon was more consistent with the sizing of their shoes. The UG ran long and narrow for me. Went true to size and had 1.5thumbs from toe-to-tip. Went down a full size and have half a thumb, but now they're too narrow! I want to wear them because everything feels great aside from the narrow toebox that causes my legs to become sore quickly. It's a shame..

QD: WAY more excited to try the SG5. I threw away my Ultra Glides after about 60 miles due to the insane drainage/quality control issues, which are essentially a dealbreaker to anyone that lives on the east coast of the United States, not to mention the laughable lace storage. Honestly kind of astounded that shoe made it through QA considering it's almost impossible to push past 12-15 miles in heat/humidity/water crossings. I'm glad some other reviewers are finally speaking out about it, I've been shocked by all the accolades that have been showered on it and I wonder if there was simply a lot of groupthink pressure being imparted to give it a good review. I'm 100% confident Salomon will get it figured out, but it's essential a proof-of-concept shoe so I didn't have super high hopes for it anyway.

Well spoken, the UG has a completely overbuilt upper for the intended use: more or less rolling terrain in average weather conditions...Not to speak about the flattening by 150km (I'm under 70kg), cushion still there, but shoe feels dead

Hi, I have a pair of the Salomon S-Lab Ultra 3 which were amazing for the first 200 miles. After that the midsole lost all its cushioning and became unbearable to run in! I`m now a little hesitant to try another pair of Salomon shoes, almost $200 for a shoe that lasts 200 miles!?!?!?.....equates to almost 1$ per mile! Think this time I`ll give the Hoka a try.

I love my Ultra Glides, but last weekend I ran a very, very muddy trail in the south of the Netherlands. I must say, a different shoe is than a better option. It was very slippery and had problems with descends, while other people with other shoes didn’t seem to have an issue. How is the Speedgoat 5? Or any other option?

Hi Edwin, facing same issues in the south of Netherlands/Belgium. I own the UG, SG4 wide and SG EVO. Although Speedgoat (EVO) is little better then the UG's, I believe Salomon Speedcross is your goto shoe for Belgium Ardennes and Netherlands

Bought a pair of Ultra Glides recently as a replacement of the Speedgoat 4. So far I ‘ve only done 12,5K on them, as the Speedgoats are still good to go in my shoe cycle. First impression: fit and lockdown are great! They resemble that of the s/lab Ultra. But i missed the bouncy feel of the Speedgoat and, though the stack height is much bigger, they actually don’t feel really more cushioned than the S/lab Ultra, which is still my favorite for racing. If I would need to buy again, I would probably go to either the Speedgoat or the S/lab Ultra, depending on what characteristics I would like. But maybe the midsole needs some more miles to get loose and I need to give it some time before I judge.

    • @bartwijnands3325
      @bartwijnands3325 2 роки тому

In addition: I think the durability predictions are quite low. I’ve had about 15 Salomons (Speedcross, S/lab Ultra, Sense) and 5 Hoka’s (Mafate, Speedgoat).
The Salomons do 1000-1200km pretty consistently, after which the profile is nearly gone at the critical sections and the upper has holes in it.
The Hoka’s pretty consistently do 1500-1800km.
Durability probably depends a lot on your weight as well (I’m 70kg)
