The Worst Signing of All Time

  • Five years ago, Jean-Kévin Augustin was one of the exciting wonderkids in world football. He beat Kylian Mbappé to the Golden Boot and Golden Ball at the 2016 Under-19 Euros, and Lionel Messi singled him out as one of the ten best young players on the planet.
When Leeds United signed Augustin on-loan from RB Leipzig in January 2020 then, it looked as though the Championship promotion hopefuls had pulled off a real coup - not least since they beat rivals Manchester United to his signature.
A dream move very quickly became a nightmare though, ironically due to Leeds winning promotion to the Premier League - so in this video, HITC Sevens takes a closer look at the costly and controversial transfer, and whether it is pound-for-pound the worst signing of all time.

This is one of those things that really did not work out as well as either party had hoped, Augustin's clubs or Augustin himself. That he managed to even get onto a football pitch at a high level and be close to actually playing at that level after his symptoms has to be a testament to persistence, his own ambition and hopes, and luck.
It's why I often argue that those clubs that end up putting themselves up for success in the long term (and national teams) cannot be reliant on one person, or one collection of players, but processes and decision-making as a whole, and being able to identify from the widest possible space. From a club perspective, you don't know how outside things like a player being extremely unfortunate with long-COVID, are going to play out. [At least he is getting the help somewhere that doesn't put him in a lot of medical debt, or force him to crowdfund his own treatment.]

A bit of context, from a Leeds United supporter.
Yeah, this video pretty much gets the situation spot on, at least for the most part. But I did find that there were a few inaccuracies, some things that you spoke about that probably require a bit more context and or insight that you gave.
Firstly, to address the accusation at the start of the video that we 'didn't want him'. Initially, that absolutely, unequivocally was not the case.
As a supporter base, we were pretty much sold the story that you spent the first five or so minutes of the video retelling. The young up-and-coming star that was, at one point in his career, considered to be arguably the best young prospect coming out of France.
That's the story we were told, and that's pretty much the transfer that we were sold.
Obviously, by the time he got around to actually pulling a shirt on and getting his first couple of minutes, we very quickly realized that that just wasn't the case.
It's also important to take into account the fact that he arrived at the club, he spent several weeks initially training to get up to scratch before he was even put in a match day team, and his first minutes weren't for weeks after he signed.
So I think it's important to distinguish between the player we thought we were getting and the player we actually got.
By the time COVID hit, I think the vast majority of our fans had pretty much wiped their hands clean of Augustin. There was very much the thought that even if he was able to get up to speed and get to some kind of acceptable fitness, his history track record, which isn't great by the way, would probably come back to bite us at some point down the line. So him leaving the club and going back to Germany was very much welcomed by our supporters, but initially, that wasn't the attitude at all.
You also alluded to the fact that Manchester United was allegedly interested in him: This is correct, but once again only partially. It was rumored at the time, but Manchester United insiders later revealed that a move was always going to be unlikely as they felt they had bigger, more realistic targets to pursue at the time. The story goes that they had apparently been watching him for months up until that point and pretty much made the decision that it just wasn't going to be worth the effort when they could just go and spend the money and buy a ready-made player straight off the bat.
The assertion that Leeds weren't interested in Eddie Nketiah were also partially incorrect.
Leeds were very much interested in signing Eddie Nketiah, and the deal got as far as an official inquiry to Arsenal regarding his availability, but it was heavily rumored at the time that Bielsa didn't feel that he was the type of player that fit his system.
That's not to say that we weren't interested, there was very much a feeling from the boardroom level that he would be an ideal signing, but this was very much one of the major sticking points between our owner, our director of football, and Marcello Bielsa, a man that had essentially been given complete control and final say on all transfers coming in and out of the club. And it wouldn't be the first time that Bielsa and the higher-ups disagreed on signings.
Nketiah would later comment on the situation and his time at Leeds, pretty much summing it up by saying that it was an absolute privilege to play under Bielsa, but he was also in the same vein an extremely difficult manager to play under, because of what he demanded.
And also for the record, Nketiah actually had a very solid record at Leeds and was generally considered by the fan base to be one of our more reliable options up front, but once again, just like JKA, it was the fitness and the ability to maintain the required fitness levels expected by Bielsa.
In regards to the actual argument that Leeds United tried to make to justify dragging the situation out, and for lack of a better word, essentially trying to get out of the transfer, you did touch on it, but I would like to try and re-explain it, with a bit more context and detail from our side.
So, JKAs contract and the clauses within weren't exactly a state secret among our fan base. As I said, initially it was very much an exciting transfer, this up-and-coming young player that we were going to tie down to a long-term contract once we had been promoted, the 'obligation to buy' was something we all knew about at the time. And obviously, the longer the loan stint dragged on, and the performances, or lack thereof, it definitely started to become a bit of a sore point among our fan base.
And then obviously COVID hit. JKA was injured at the time, the prognosis for a return was fairly long-term, the noise coming from the club was initially days, and then several weeks, and then by the time the break was announced, nobody actually knew if he was going to be back in time for the resumption.
It was very much a Patrick Bamford style injury where it initially seemed innocuous, but for some inexplicable reason, a two or three-day injury somehow turned into a several-month injury. That was pretty much the boat we were in with JKA.
When the break was announced, it was very much the viewpoint from both the fan base, and obviously from the club itself, that if promotion wasn't achieved within the time frame that the loan contract stipulated, we should absolutely try our luck to try and get out of the transfer.
He came to the club, he wasn't fit, he was repeatedly injured, and he had now suffered a semi-long-term injury that nobody knew if he was ever going to be able to return from. Why should the club have to stump up the very sizable fee to bring a player like that in? Especially if there's potentially a way out of it.
And yes, I think the vast majority of us knew at the time, and especially now in hindsight that it was essentially a roll of the dice. I don't think any of us actually expected RB to just roll over and accept that we didn't want to pay, and then just throw their hands up in the air and take it on the chin. We definitely do as a fanbase except that Leeds United has to accept the lion's share of the responsibility for this transfer, and that it probably was a little bit cheeky for us to try and get out of it like we did.
But I submit to you that if your club was in the same situation as ours, you guys would have absolutely tried it as well.
At the end of the day, Leeds was sold a bill of goods that didn't match what was on the tin. We saw a loophole to try and get out of it, we took it, and it didn't pay off.
I think that even the most hardcore Leeds supporter would acknowledge that RB was entitled to some kind of remuneration for the transfer, but I just don't accept that we should have had to pay the whole lot, especially the several hundred thousand dollars a year wage that he has asked to be retrospectively paid.

The fact that Leeds United have to pay him over £20m in wages while receiving nothing in return is certainly enough to define him as an awful signing, without saying anything negative about him as a person or his ability as a footballer.
Circumstances and a 'misunderstanding' over the details of his contract are what's made him a terrible signing.
Besides, many people with mental health issues lose their job every single day while receiving nothing in return...with many having little or no chance of a quick return to employment.

Just shows that contracts are sometimes not worth the the paper they are printed on. The end of the season is when all games are finished. This was not stated in the contract a date was put down instead . If these are the facts then Leeds have been done over. Don't get me wrong I hate Leeds with a passion , but to be fair if it was my club (UTT) in this position then I would feel very aggrieved.

It is acting in bad faith which is probably what counted against us. We agreed to sign him by a date that no one at the time had any reason to believe the season wouldn't be finished by. We've then tried to wriggle out of it on a technicality just because he was shit and unfit.

Here's another name: Julian Nagelsmann. A very young manager for whom FC Bayern paid a record-breaking release fee of around 25 million Euros to RB Leipzig, only for him to be informed through the media that he was fired just weeks ago only because FC Bayern lost P1 to Borussia Dortmund (and they lost P1 again last week to the BVB, with their new manager Thomas Tuchel). You can debate if he was the worst FC Bayern managerial hire or not, but suffice it to say: He was likely one of their worst sackings in decades. The way Nagelsmann was fired may have never happened under Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß.

    Posting for the 15th time:
I created an all-time XI with no overlap of international careers - no player was active for their national team at the same time as any other player.
Here it is (with the years of each player's international career listed in parentheses):
    🇩🇪 Oliver Kahn (1995 - 2006)
    🇩🇪 Manfred Kaltz (1975 - 1983), 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Bob Crompton (1902 - 1914), 🇧🇷 Thiago Silva (2008 - ), 🇩🇪 Andreas Brehme (1984 - 1994)
    🇺🇾 José Leandro Andrade (1923 - 1930), 🇮🇹 Ugo Locatelli (1936 - 1940)
    🇮🇹 Valentino Mazzola (1942 - March 1949)
    🇧🇷 Pelé (1957 - 1971), 🇧🇷 Neco (1917 - 1922), 🇭🇺 Zoltán Czibor (May 1949 - 1956)
    Manager: 🇨🇿 Karel Petrů (1931 - 1935)
If you choose to ignore the position of manager, Ugo Locatelli can be replaced in midfield by 🇦🇷 Antonio Sastre (1933 - 1941).
How about making a video featuring an XI you created using this limitation (and without using uncapped players)?

Its the ridiculous inflated transfer fees in today's market thats the real issue no one would take any notice if it wasn't for the fact that the average EPL club is paying a fortune to bring players from across the world to their club and often find themselves paying £50 + to sign them and then they end up flopping or simply don't perform to expectations but such is the riches of the English game that teams from other countries hike up the prices whenever they sell their best players to an EPL team it is what it is i guess

Little fun fact, the name Breno is quit similar to the word brenn(o), in fact in Bavaria they (Uli Hoeneß, Beckenbauer and co) always said his name like it was Brenno, with brennen being German for burning (Brenner is burner, brennt is burns, etc). For a German speaker his name literally is Burno. So him burning down his house is quiet fitting indeed. And him being a convicted criminal under contract in Munich isn't all that unfitting either.

At the time the fees involved we’re probably about right and it’s just one of those where it simply didn’t work out. That happens in football, it’s one’s where someone has had one good season and gets a big deal that better fit this argument. Andy Carroll to Liverpool anyone??
