By far the most beautiful rendition of this sonata.

the prologue of the first movement is sooo dramatic. I bet Schumann was on the edge when he composed this... the whole sonata,as well as Sokolov´s interpretation, is simply fantastic!!!

This must be another of Sokolov´s benchmark interpretations. It captures the manic side of Schumann´s genius perfectly and makes the neglect of this sonata difficult to understand.

A very clean, well recorded exposition of the work; nice phrasing, a little slow, but OK. Then, I listened to Gilels 1959 London recording of the sonata. And I discovered that this music has something else, on top of the intelligent work that Sokolov has put in all the little parts of it. it's called soul! I find very little in this rendition.

this is the best piano playing i ever heard and one of schumann greatest work

Gilels, Gilels, Gilels, In a completely different class.
Sokolov's playing is too clever and intricate, neither romantic nor spontaneous. There have been many greater Russian pianists, he just happens to be maybe the best of the current crop, by their previously exalted standards.

Sokolov is the greatest of the great recorded pianists.

I'm sorry, he bangs a lot and his playing is too " clever" and "intricate". Given all the very much greater pianists that have gone before him, your comment makes no sense.

Again a very convincing and believable interpretation....I might not agree with everything Sokolov does but it's compelling to say the least ....

Wow -- what an amazing work, overall, and what a wild "manic" episode at 28:15 ff !!

@arabella1827 I checked and it seems to me that this is really from Paris. The Amsterdam concert in febraury has the same program of the Vicenza concert in January. In the second part of the year, as usually he do, sokolov changed some pieces, some chopin, with the Schumann sonata. This Paris concert in fact is from November.

This is actually mislabeled. This is from Amsterdam Feb 27. 2005. This is probably the most mislabeled bootleg out there. For some reason, every download I see of this says Paris 2005. Incorrect.

Really disappointing. I totally miss the Schumann soul in this version. Just listen to Gilels, Perahia, (even) Sofronitsky, and above all: Catherine Collard...

Sokolov semble avoir trouvé le son Schumanien au cours du dernier mouvement... peut-être gêné par l’acoustique ? La coda est fantastique !
