It seems that English, more than any other language, proves that perfection is not worth striving for, provided one does not live in an English-speaking country and simply seeks to integrate with the locals. Americans, British, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans, Indians, Ghanaians, Filipinos, and other English speakers from around the globe all have different perceptions of what perfect and standard English should sound like.
1:35 "Speak slowly" It's interesting how this also applies to other skills. Slowing down helped me tremendously when I learned how to play the guitar, for example.
Caro Luca! Seit vier Monaten bringe ich mir selbst Deutsch. Und weißt du was? Gestern habe ich mein erstes Gespräch mit einer Muttersprachlerin auf Deutsch geführt. Das war genial! Eine kleine Vorstellung und danach haben wir über Hobbys, Freizeit und die Deutsche Sprache gesprochen. Ich freue michsehr, mein mündliches Deutsch getestet habe. Ich danke dir Luca für alle deine Arbeit und Tipps. Ich wünsche dir ein schönes Wochenende 🇨🇭👍👏
Thanks Luca. My knowledge is at B1/B2 with Italian. Im working on improving my conversation skills without getting stuck. On my last trip to Italy this autumn I met with 2 Italian friends who corrected quite a bit. I realised how much more improvement I needed. So I now have an Italian tutor who’s assisting me with conversations.
IMO all of this boils down to: don't try to run before you can walk. It's natural to want to be able to speak quickly, use complicated expressions, use nothing but proper grammar, etc. But if you try to do that without the right foundation you'll faceplant the same way that a toddler would if he tries to run before knowing how to walk.
This is amazing. I nodded my head all the way through this video. So many nails hit on the head. I used to do so many of these and they are hard habits to break sometimes. I still struggle not to go over in my head conversations I've had and award myself a grade!! Ugh.
I used to struggle trying to come up with things to talk about in the language I'm learning. I didn't know what i was doing wrong, but now i do. I tend to speak fast anyways and make incorrect grammar in English and German. So from now on I'll try to speak slower and a bit more simpler. The key word stuff is what i do in school and writing so I'm good at knowing how to pick key words. Thank you for your hepful tips and advice 👍🏼
I’ve found I need to practice speaking faster to keep natives from cutting me off and finishing my sentences or answering before I finish. Not with a patient listener of course. But that’s pretty uncommon. Most people aren’t so patient.
I Think study connected speech help speak more fluent. And learning how to pronounce sounds that your target language have that you don't have in your native language.
I have made myself many things: Advanced network engineer creating AI, working on military systems, critical thinking lifelong study, Astrologer, theologian, all manner of "stuff" and now, Spanish expert. I´ve found consistently that zodiac sun signs determine more about "how" a person learns than any other factor. For example, Scorpio. The ego/fear based perfectionist. We must learn to say it perfectly! We have no choice. I can hear Virgo and Aries in the background saying, "I don´t believe in that stuff" because they hate the control, the lack of freedom. Cancer will probably become the polyglot first because of their boring tenacity. Give it to them slowly and they´ll master it best. If Leo can get his stank on the brand, and gain popularity, he´ll excel. Otherwise, he´ll pee on it and walk off. Gemini is super-intelligent but most likely to walk off midway. They are the perfect multiple language approach students. I don´t assign "blame" on a tribe because they are acting within their own nature to be.
communicating quickly to look cool is a pitfall i have fallen in before! i can verify it makes things difficult! ive been learning asl for 6+ years. i saw people fingerspelling and signing insanely fast and thought “i have to do that to prove my fluency” but that only jumbled my spelling and made my sentences choppy. GO AT YOUR OWN PACE!
Merci beaucoup Luca ! Cuando yo hablo español, yo hablo italo-spañol and when I speak english... un peu des trois défilent through my mind mais je ne traduis pas de ma native lingua 😂. Je voyage 🎉 et je me régale avec votre e-book en italien (10 regole essenziali per un apprendimento intelligente delle lingue❤) 🙏
Luca, I don't like reading at all, and I'm at B2 level. I really enjoy listening and watching. I've heard many times that reading is important and effective... Should I read even if I don't like it, or should I focus on listening?
I really have a problem with speaking, and even more with feedback: I hate my accent, even in my native language. Maybe I should change my accent in the mother tongue first?
That's something I had noticed but didn't actually put in practice. I noticed I was speaking too fast-sometimes I get by very well, but overall, it turns out not helping at all once I can't keep speaking at this speed for too long. I think I'm not coping very well with it because I tend to speak very fast when it comes to Portuguese, which is my mother tongue.
Tip 1: Focus on communication, not perfection. - If you don't know a specific word/phrase, try using simpler language in order to get our point across (the WHAT) instead of nitpicking things about the way you speak your TL (the HOW). the WHAT > the HOW. Tip 2: Speak slower than what you're used to. Speaking slower allows you to come up with more well thought-out and clearer sentences because you're taking the time to formulate them as well as processing and becoming aware of your language patterns. Let go of the idea that fast speech equals native speech: If you're speaking too fast that you're barely understandable, then you're not communicating at all. Tip 3: Mistakes are your friends. Making mistakes and correcting them is the fastest way to learn. Next time you speak with someone ask them to give you feedback at the end of your conversation, review it and integrate it back into your speech. Tip 4: Don't get wordy. Don't overload sentences with flowery adjectives and complex grammatical structures before you master the basics. Keep it simple, stupid and build upon it little by little as your own pace. Don't feel the need to sound elegant and sophisticated like a professional orator o public speaker of your TL if you're not one. Don't impress, express yourself instead. Tip 5: Express, don't impress. Break up your thoughts into smaller and more manageable chunks that are easier to express. Don't overthink grammar when you're speaking. Nice video, Luca! This is a minor criticism (or big depending how you take it) but I think the places where you give advice in other languages is a bit annoying and come across as try-hard. It's specially annoying if you're listening to the video because now I've to watch the video to make sure there was translation for that and I didn't miss anything important.
I always feel that if im speaking slowly, that im annoying the listener. These Japanese teachers are always so busy, man. And with number 2, I think that about my English students, but when it comes to myself, i worry about my grammar so much because I know it's incorrect, but not how to correct it in the moment.😅😅
I think this video is not for me 😂 I’m working on being an English homework assistant so I have to improve and correct my mistakes and obviously my fluency at the same time .
So, I really understand why you include these snippets in other languages, and they are, in a way, cool. However, I used to listen to your videos (yes, listen to, not watch) while walking or running, and now I can't, because I would need to stop, look at the phone, rewind, and catch the subtitles. I won't. I'm really sorry, but I won't. It's your content ;-), so do as you wish, but for this viewer, these new videos just don't work as well.

For those who haven't noticed, Luca's english is still improving. It sounds more natural somehow.
Thanks for the kind words^^

Absolutely! These are universal principles that apply to a wide range of skills, including playing an instrument.

Way to go! Speaking any language fluently is a matter of constant practice and feedback =)
Don't do the mistake of not implementing what Luca says in this video. It's that SIMPLE ! Grazie ancora Luca per quest'ottimo contenuto.
You da man Desholino! As always 😁
Grazie Luca!!! Era il contenuto che aspettavo!!!
Grazie a te per il commento! 😀

We have to impress ourselves first with our language abilities.
In the Polish sentence you missed the number 5 🙄
