When I need a life-perspective reset, this is one I come back to. The natural light, the ceiling fans, the ladies' expandable fans - you can feel the humidity just watching it. The enthusiasm, the freedom, it is a joy to behold. I have been conservative Mennonite all my life - sing acapella 4 parts in every church service I've ever attended. I love this music, it is the language of my soul. And in this rendition, I love the Appalachian flair. These people are gems; no sound system can move the soul like an hour or two of singing these hymns can...
I know what you mean. I had the same experience. it seems to work that way for a lot of people. You need to hear it in person if you haven't done so yet, it sounds even better live. It just fills the air and saturates you with lovely sounds.
There is a fountain filled with blood, Drawn from Immanuel’s veins, And sinners plunged beneath that flood Lose all their guilty stains. The dying thief rejoiced to see That fountain in His day; And there have I, though vile as he, Washed all my sins away. Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood Shall never lose its pow’r, Till all the ransomed church of God Are safe, to sin no more. E’er since by faith I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply, Redeeming love has been my theme, And shall be till I die. When this poor, lisping, stamm’ring tongue Lies silent in the grave, Then in a nobler, sweeter song, I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save.
This is one of my favorite Sacred Harp videos and I watch A LOT of Sacred Harp. And the guy who says "1, 2, 3"...could he be any cooler? And I mean Fonzi cool. and I'm a Hindu who god speaks to thru music.
Most churches don't have the Sacraments and I just feel they don't know what they're missing... :´- ( I really love the way how some protestant churches praise the Lord, but on the other hand I see they don´t even know that there is... more! For me as a catholic the protestant services look so... not complete, or even empty. There are readings from the Holy Bible and sermons, prayers, songs and in some churches even some dynamical activity of the Holy Spirit, but I personally miss the Sacraments there... The real activity of Jesus Christ! And mostly, the real and physical presence of Body and Blood of Our Lord in the form of bread and wine. Also the Absolution... You wouldn´t want to live without them, if you only knew how precious these heavenly gifts are... I´m sad that not everyone has the oportunity to know what I know... I think last week it was the Week of ecumenical prayers for unity of the Church. PLEASE PRAY FOR US CATHOLICS. We really need that... I know that the world mostly hear about the beastlinesses in the Catholic Church, I am ashamed about those incidents (pedophile priests, etc.). But there is also much more good things in my Church, that you won´t hear/see in the massmedia. Because when a forrest is growing, it is quiet and not interesting. But when there is a tree in that forrest falling, everyone hears that! I am asking you: Please don´t hate us :/ May the Good Lord bless you all! :) PS: I really got to like the Sacred Harp music! :D
Wow. I myself am a Catholic Christian, but was linked this by a friend. This is incredible, on par with my own Church's Gregorian chant tradition. Wish we saw this more places! God bless.
I like this better. this is for everyone, while Gregorian chant is only for the trained choir. And this is just much more exuberant and fun. And of course it is genuine folk music, that survived all by itself, traditions intact, without a church or leadership to organize it. People just kept this alive because they loved it so much, even after the rest of the world forgot it. Don't get me wrong, I love Gregorian chant, but to me, it doesn't really compare. Nothing does though.
@@justforever96 Gregorian Chant isn't that hard to learn! It just takes a bit of time investment, probably about as much as Sacred Harp. I've been to a Mass of thousands where everyone knew how to sing the Creed together. Now that was beautiful. Polyphony is where you get into needing trained choirs, and is consequently not necessarily my favorite. A shame it's so popular with more traditional Catholic liturgy.
@@dlee3710in fact Catholic and Christian refer to the same thing. Those outside of the Church are not Christians in the full sense, because they are cut off from the Body of Christ.
There is NOTHING more powerful than singing about our precious Redeemer Jesus Christ!!! Folks.....THIS is heaven! If you wonder what we'll be doing when we get Home,THIS IS IT! Wonderful to see Syble Adams leading here with David Lee. I live in Ontario, Canada, and sang with Syble in Michigan. Some day I hope to get to Hoboken, GA, and sing with David Lee.
1 Kings 17 1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word. 2 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying. 3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. 4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there. 5 So he went and did according unto the word of the Lord: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. 6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook. 7 And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. 8 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, 9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee. 10 So he arose and went to Zarepath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. 11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand. 12 And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. 13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son. 14 For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth. 15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days. 16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke by Elijah. 17 And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him. 18 And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? 19 And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed. 20 And he cried unto the Lord, and said, O Lord my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son? 21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the Lord, and said, O Lord my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again. 22 And the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth. 25 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth.

I grew up in churches that sang the Sacred Harp method. Didn't realize how blessed I am. :)
this is the way hymns were meant to be sung. rejoicing, powerful, together.
I went to an old harp singing with my papaw many years ago, 60,s.
Addendum. It was morning star church in Anderson co. TN. They had dinner on the ground .this song leader is fantastic.

Most churches don't sing hymns a cappella and I just feel they don't know what they're missing.
I feel that with every denomination comes a style of music that makes it special.
not this special...
Once my Lutheran church had a power outage and had to sing a cappella. It was beautiful.
I'm Primitive Baptist and we sing old hymns a cappella but we don't sit in the formation like the Sacred Harp singers do.

1 Kings 17
1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
8 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,
9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.
10 So he arose and went to Zarepath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
