As a retired Seabee Chief I have always been impressed by the submarine service. Thank you for honoring these great men.
Seeing the faces of the crew, some with their gals and one with his dog, is just heart wrenching. We forget sometimes how young they were and about their families who had to deal with the loss of their loved ones so far away. Well done .

because of their sacrifice.
I try to live each day of my life with their thoughts and dreams hopefully expressed in my actions - and when I mess up I feel their gaze... and face my humiliation in lieu of their families' loss.

I have been collecting memorabilia for the 52 lost boats in WW2 for a while. Back in the day, I was an Associate Member of the Submarine Veterans of WW2. Prior to the creation of the internet, I used to correspond with the survivors of the lost boats. Captain Crowley was nice enough to autograph a photo and send it to me. A moment of silence for those still on Eternal Patrol. I retired from the Submarine Force as a Senior Chief Radioman- RMCS(SS) in 1993.
Thank you for a moving tribute to 78 brave young men who give up their lives for their country.
They deserve to be remembered, all servicemen do.
These men gave their lives so we could enjoy ours a free people. SALUTE 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

A very brave and courageous crew of the US Flier. Truly they gave a good account of themselves on patrol and in combat. The end showing the 79 KIA. How young they looked with their Submariners uniforms on. My thoughts and prayers to those lost that tragic day. As well as their families left to grieve their passing. A very informative video on the action of one US sub during WW2. 💪👃✨
My God, such a large percent of men born in the 20s were eliminated in that war! Heart wrenching.
A couple of them were 18 years old..

I never hear "Taps" without getting weepy. I had to mute the sound after about the third repeat, but it punches home the reality of the sacrifices brave men like these made during WWII. God help us if we ever forget how to feel this kind of loss. Good job, HHYT.
Based on the survey of the wreckage, has it been determined what struck and sunk the Flier?
I would say she hit a mine, because had it been a japanese sub they would have waited around for any survivors.American submariners were high value targets.Thank HIDDEN HISTORY for a great video.
If it was the Japanese sub, they would go straight back to Port and brag about it demanding credit for sinking it, not looking for survivors

The Japanese only wanted Prisoners to TORTURE.

It's both amazing and heartbreaking that so many men didn't get to come home from the war. This documentary is great for putting faces on the names of the crew lost.
This was one of the most dignified and respectful tributes to the lost Crewmen of that ill fated submarine!
Its important to never lose track that like we viewers, these were real, living people with private lives that extended far beyond their military service!
They each had hopes and dreams of life after the war ended, of being with people they loved or of finding someone to love!
All of that ended with the subsea detonation that opened their submarine up to the ocean, sinking her in seconds...
The fortunate ones somehow found themselves outside of their submarine, the less fortunate died or lost consciousness from the blast.
Tragically, for the remainder there was to be neither escape nor rescue, as they desperately fought for survival in the darkness of their flooding, sunk submarine, which moments before had been their safe haven from the sea.
And there they lay, inside the wreck of their submarine, for decade after decade, until the wreck was finally located and identified.
The new generations of the lost Crewmen would learn about the final resting place of their long lost family members, after all that time!
Whilst checking online, they're going to find this respectful tribute and see photographs that may have come from family albums, of their family members that never came home from the war...
My brief sweet life is over, my eyes no longer see.
No christmas trees, no summer walks, no pretty girls for me.
I got the chops, I've had it, my nightly ops are done.
Yet, in another hundred years, I'll still be twentyone.
To the men of USS Flier on eternal patrol, may your sailing always be in smooth water and happy company.

You don’t have to be in uniform anymore. The law/code was changed. Veterans have the option to salute when not in uniform. Thank you for honoring my brother submariners.

The last part was very powerful. Thank you for posting as it helps to keep their memories alive. Most of them seemed to be just children in their early 20s 😢
When they joined up and went through training and submariners school, they were just that. When the flier was sunk, they were old experienced men in young mens bodies. They had endured hardships and deadly threats and seen friend and foe alike go on eternal patrol. They had been changed from the innocent children into the men that were the valiant backbone of their generation. They helped tremendously in shaping their nation to be a proud and staunch defender of freedom, and they ended up paying the highest price for that freedom.
And even though none of us serving today in any navy in the world knew any of these men, we will always be indepted to them. For they paved the way for us to serve an honorable cause. That is their eternal legacy. That is the legacy that we are honorbound to uphold and carry on and imbue into the future and the people of that future.

Vote wisely, keep informed of the candidates' policies and consider those who gave their lives for your right to choose.

Thank you for the tribute to the lost crew at the end. I'm mindful that they were the same generation as my father (b. 1918), who came home from the ETO.
As a Submariner I appreciated this telling of Flier's story and the showing of the men lost.

I’m confused didn’t you say out of the crew six sailors died?
14 escaped, out of those 14 , 8 perished the next day. Don’t know if it was from injury or unable to stay afloat until they got to shore. 20 seconds to evacuate a submarine , that is really no time at all.

The original Flier 8 survivors and "Nine other marooned persons" were picked up by Redfin.
It looks like AI ruined that picture when somebody told it to clean up the original image

The sub going back after the grounding, I once met a WW2 sub vet and his sub had hit a pier as it was leaving for a patrol. While it was being fixed, he played baseball against another sub crew and broke his ankle badly. He was in a cast when his sub left and was assinged on land. The sub was lost on patrol with all hands. He said that haunted him for the rest of his life
What's the periscope combat footage of at around the 8:00 mark? Is this actual legit combat footage or from a movie? It looks legit but without a source I can only guess.
This story moves along way too fast. I found it very hard to follow. Maybe some animations would help.
The narrators voice is either horrible AI or just horrible in general. Totally unlistenable.

As tragic and heartbreaking the loss of these men was, less we forget the losses of others, very much like them, at the very hands of these submariners, enemy status notwithstanding. War, what is it good for... absolutely nothing.
In the end the unbeatable foe is the sea.

Please, don't waste our time with a detailed recounting of the entire service life of the ship in question. Cover the basics, important events that led to the final situation, and spend at least 70% of the video on the specifix situation that caused her sinking.
