I wish Lego would bring back these sets.
Dank Sanababish you predefined the future they did
*cough* bennys space squad *cough*
@@Timetuplay27 well, kinda
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Cool
I barely remember the 1970's, but I ironically, vividly remember getting this set.
the cassic space man is my faverit
I got this for Christmas, probably 1979 or 1980. I remember sitting for hours on Christmas day building this. It was absolutely awesome to me as a 7 or 8 year old; the buggy that could be transported in the explorer was almost mind blowing :-)
Great review man!
I had exactly the same memory. I was 7 years old and my grandmother often got me Lego sets for Christmas. This set blew my mind and I played with it for years and years, creating my own ships and swapping out parts with friends. Great video!
Same for me, it was a Xmas present from my grandparents in about 1980. Wish I still had this set now
there is a new lego set for the lego movie 2 which has the escape buggy (mini version, looks basic) and a spaceship
[edit] it is a lego juniors or lego 4+ set depending on what you want to call it, and there is a huge spaceship
Benny; SPACESHIP!!!
I think Lego-Sets will never look old. It's Timeless stuff in my opinion.
And i'm sure if you would give a classic Space Set to a child today it would have as much as Fun as the child's had 30 years ago with it! :)
TK Filmproduktion I agree, from parts choice and me being a Lego head, I can point out a classic set from a mile away, but at the same time that makes it timeless
TK Filmproduktion best comment in this video!!! I agree one hundred percent!!
Lego space sets from the late 70s to 80s is the best ever sets done by lego just like the train sets as well no new sets to today matchs these
I'm 12 and buy classic space sets on internet to play with
I think that the pieces can look old with discoloring, though.
Hiya Jang! As an AFOL from South Africa, I really enjoy your vids and MOC work - well done! This set really is very special to me as I won it in a LEGO building competition back in 1982 when I was just 9 years old. As with most of my childhood LEGO, pieces went AWOL and were eaten up by the vacuum cleaner so I was quite disappointed to see how much of this original set was missing after rekindling my passion for LEGO a few years back. After some serious searching I found a complete set on eBay and imported it from Cyprus to SA. Complete with a box in near mint condition and the instructions exactly as they were new, you can imagine the joy of building the same set some 30 years later... took me right back to the first time I built it in the '80s. You mention it was a sticker free set but Interestingly the early versions of Set 928 did include stickers for the minifig torsos... I wonder how many people who have watched your Explorer review have the stickered versions? Much like the space logo, these really didn't wear well so must be quite scarce now. Thanks for the trip down memory lane and remember we don't stop playing because we get old... we get old because we stop playing! Cheers. Paul
My mom bought this for me for Christmas 1979. My favorite Lego set ever.
+Dark Jedi Mine too! Same year '79. My favorite set.
pre-millenium sets seem so much cooler to me
***** Have you looked at all the sets? There's way more than childish action and IP. There's technics. There's creator. There's architecture. There's the awesome modular buildings which while very pricey are amazing. There's plenty of cool city sets. There's various special sets that come out from time to time. I would say the IP and "childish action" sets are maybe half the sets. I get the catalog all the time, and there's always sets I want and I am 49 and build and display them only - space and money prevent me, but if you bought one set a year I am sure you could find something.
i grew up with lego in the 90s. I am blown away with the newer sets.
@@michaelbauers8800 I agree with you
I dug out my old LEGO parts, washed them, and found almost all the parts for this ship. I still remember the day my mother surprised me with this after school when we were parked in the grocery parking lot. I have to say I'm a little underwhelmed. I got Benny's Spaceship (70816) recently and really enjoyed its size and level of detail. i guess it spoiled me a bit. This was such a large ship for its day and I am lucky that the printed pieces are virtually perfect, especially the lovely large print on the front piece. I couldn't believe that I was only missing a couple of pieces, as I had thought I lost all of my old space LEGO parts. Thanks for the video tour of this set!
blargg wow it's long
Oh, the memories..! Nothing beats the classic space theme. I vividly remember getting this set for christmas. When it was time to unwrap the presents, I used to check my presents for lego in advance by shaking them and when I heard the familiar clickedy-clack sound of lego bricks, I would unwrap these presents first. When I unwrapped this beauty, all the other presents were forgotten and I immediately started to build the spaceship until it was done, much to the dismay of my sister, who couldn't believe that I wasn't interested in all the other presents.
I rolled over the floor laughing about the SPACESHIP!
Go Benny :-D
This is my all-time eternal ultimate Lego classic! This is it.
I remember making this when I was 4 - still brings back fond memories...
the only connection I have to this set as I wasn't alive in 1979 is a micro-scale version of this ship which is exclusive and came with a book which is why I'm here
Got this set for Christmas 1979. It blew me away since I saw it in a toyshop in Israel where I lived back then. Getting it was mindblowing to say the least. It is still super cool and I just finished it and washed all the bricks and plates today. The planet logo on the minifigs are totally gone on the white ones, but the red ones can still be seen, albeit some colour fade is present. Apart from this the set is in fine shape. I've lost the two large base plates and two of the red lights have left me since 1979 along with the grey antenna for the control tower and some smaller bits. But the most important, the ship is 100% complete. Ahhh, heaven!
Great video -- I got this set back in '79 and I agree that it is one of the best Lego sets of that era. Once the space theme Lego sets came out that was all I was interested in. I know I have at least half a dozen sets of various sizes including this one. Does anyone remember the set that had the rocket launch pad? I also have a set that was a spaceship a little smaller than this one. The wings were white and the glass pieces were all blue tinted. Also all the rocket engine pieces were black. My brother and some neighbor boys used to reenact scenes from Star Wars movies using these early Lego space sets. My older brother actually took one of the knights from my Lego castle set and painted it all black. He stuck a little cape on the back and voila there was Darth Vader. He built a huge Death Star type ship out of the majority of my space Legos. That left me and my buddy to piece together scrawny ships playing the Han Solo and Luke Skywalker roles.
I got this for Christmas as a kid, and my big brother put it together for me overnight when he couldn't sleep. A really fun set. Thanks for showing this and bringing back memories :)
My dad had this set when it was new out.
Cool vid Jang.
Do you know how *old* that makes me feel?! :)
I got this at Christmas in 1980 as a 5-year-old kid in Sweden. Wow, haven’t seen this since I was a kid. Such great memories. I absolutely loved the set, my all-time favourite. Thanks for the extensive review!
My all time favourite set, thanks for posting, a real trip down memory lane.
I used to have this. Hopefully still have it, in a box in the attic at my parents' home. So nostalgic seeing this review! Thanks, Jang!
My favorite Lego set ever. Great memories watching this.
Wow! I had this when I was a young kid. Brings back alot of great memories watching this!
I used to have this model great memories. Thanks for uploading this trip down Lego lane.
Wow, this takes me back. This was my favorite set. Thanks a lot for uploading.
I got this for Christmas in the early 80's. :) Thankfully my mom kept my Lego collection and I was able to rescue it out of the crawl space a few years ago. Thanks for the vid!
The little things in the classic space sets is what makes them awesome. The idea of using clear yellow for glass/windows is unique.
I had this exact set as a kid... your video brought back a whole stack of great memories - even watching my dad build the stack plate base of the ship (I was about 4).
I had this one as a child.
I just recently built this ship using pieces from my collection. I had one printed "LL 928" 1x4 brick that I found at a Bricks n Minifigs store. And I had a few of the space logo 1x2 bricks. I had to use a few slight color variations. Most noticeably the trans-yellow parts. I used trans-blue windscreens that I got for 30 cents each from bricklink. (the trans-yellow are very expensive and rare). It still looks great with trans-blue. Love this set.
Easily your best and funniest review, Jang! I actually remember seeing this set at my old elementary school in one of the classrooms, but all the parts were mixed up and several pieces (especially the astronaut helmets) had cracked or were missing. You are very lucky to have this fine set still intact after all these years. And the inclusion of Benny the 1970-something space guy was a humorous bonus! SPACESHIP!!!
I miss playing with Legos as a kid. I always will remember them as being my inspiration to become an engineer! I collect the mega bloks halo sets now for my son but these Lego sets were my favorite
Me and my brother had that set back in the day! We later dismantled it, and build other stuff with the pieces. Never build it back again, but we had it for quite a while.
I remember getting this set for my birthday from my gran. I would've been seven. I built that cruiser till I could do it in my dreams - the best Lego I ever had! Others must think the same, because it goes for a lot of money on eBay. Great memories. Thanks.
I love this set. Best set ever made bar none! I just got this one today to add to my collection. It is also great paired with the LL 924 The Space Cruiser.
I was 12 when this set arrived under the Christmas tree. I was , well over the moon when I got to build this set. I still think it is very cool. Thanks for the memories.
Great to see this again. I got this for Christmas 1979. I loved the rear buggy storage.
+Bill Edwards Ha ha, me too. Be well.
Aw man! Lego Classic Space! How amazing are these sets? This theme is what got me interested in Lego in the first place! I had a few of these sets as a kid, but gave them away so long ago... the nostalgia factor is waayyy up there in my case! They should really make those sets today, they would be a hit!
My brother got this back in the early 80's. A few years ago my parents found it in storage in pieces in a plastic bag during Spring cleaning and were about to throw it away. Good thing I was there to claim it! I brought it back to my place and stored it for a few years before my brother, after feeling nostalgic asked about its whereabouts. I told him I had it and reluctantly gave it back to its rightful owner.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
I used to have that set; me and my dad put it together :)
Thank you for bringing the fond memories back :)
I got this set for Christmas 1980 ! So much memory's ! 🇩🇪👍THX
Just picked up this set. Waiting on delivery! Can’t wait to review it!!!
This was my most favourite Christmas present ever. I was seven years old and yet remember ever single detail as though it was last Christmas!
All of the Lego Space sets from the late 70's and early 80's were awesome, but this one was the Grand Daddy of them all. If you were lucky enough to have one, back in the day, then you were the envy of every other kid on the block!
wow ... memories!
I had this one when I was 10!!!
Love this set!! I actually had this when I was a kid, it was my only Lego set!! :) -- Great to see it again, thank you!! :)
Great review. Amazing, perfect, original, classic Lego Space set. The architypal Lego Spaceship, and still (imho) the best. 40 years old this year. Happy birthday! I never had this set, but how I lusted after it as a child (and even now at 44!). I recently built the microscale version (11910) with my 4 year old son, from the Great Lego Sets - A visual history book. He loved building it. I have Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, Spaceship! from the 1st Lego movie still sealed in box and ready to build together when he's a little older :D
These Vintage sets are just wonderful! They sure bring back the memories from those innocent days of childhood in the early '80s. You really give them the attention these cute old sets truly deserve, keep going!
By the way, when I look my UCS Executor sitting on the shelf while watching these old set reviews, I really start to understand how old these sets actually are. Some "evolution" there...
You are finally doing funny reviews! I love it!!! Very cool!
This set is the reason why I come across these classic space pieces when I'm searching in my lego box
love the benny reference, lol. Kids and I absolutely love his character and they love my classic space minifigs!
Man, all these memories! Love these videos thanks Jang :D
Finally got one of these in prime condition for my collection, very excited! Bidding for these on Ebay is usually fierce.
These sets are so funky and cool, I would love to have one
I so wish I had it, one time I did than I went through my dark ages and gave most my Lego to a kid down the street, im glad he is enjoying it but I wish I had kept this one, the space theme was my fav.
First thing I bought with money I saved up myself. Just found my old Lego disassembled in a bag in a box in my attic. When I saw the printed pieces from this I immediately googled the instructions and started to put it together. It was all there! Never dismantling it again.
I love Lego Classic Space sets. I was 2 when this set came out, so I didn't own this particular set, but I had many other classic space and a couple Futuron sets. One of the coolest sets I had was the Alien Moon Stalker. I wish Lego would reissue classic sets! But at least there's Bricklink. I've bought some sets there, and they're as much fun to assemble as an adult as they were when I was a kid!! Great video!
oh man i wish i had this. This set IMO was ahead of its time. This set compared to the Galaxy Commander is like comparing Lexxus to BMW. Lego chose the right color combo on this ship with the yellow translucent bricks. Thank u for a video worthy of the Lego Brickline Award (I made that up)!
It looks Fantastic. Congratulations to this Amazing Collection
Excellent video sir and a very nice thorough presentation of this monsterous lego set.I had it as kid and damn I wish I had hung onto it along with the box and kept it in this condition.
I had this one. Thanks for the memories.
This was my favorite back then… just love the memories. My parents bought it from flea market in exchange for some money and a lot of Micky Mouse issues xD
Thanks for share!
I love your reviews and this set looks fantastic!
I am going to try to make a spaceship like this for sure!
I remember seeing this set as a kid and wishing I could get it. The over all shape of spacecraft had quite the influence on a lot of early ship designs I used to came up with. These days, I look back and think of this set and the Beta 1 command base set 6970 as the two that cemented the style the classic space sets. :)
One of the best classic space set!
I still have this set from when I got it new in 1979 for my 8th birthday!
i love the set my favorite part of the set is the space ship and i love it when beeny says space ship and ends up i the places that he did on the space ship
I really love this set. I own two myself
This was my favorite . All my space guys were at the service LL928 !
SPACESHIP! I love it! I asked my son if he would like this set if it was brand new, or if it just wasn't fancy enough. He looked at me and said, "Seriously?" HE LOVES ALL THINGS LEGO!! We love your videos!
My dad had this as a kid, and played with it so much, and then it was in storage for 20+ years, and then I took it out and played with it as a child, and I hope to someday pass it down to my kids
I wish I had one of these. This is a great set and another great review!
I always wanted this set when I was a kid. It was the holy grale of LEGO space and it was super expensive in Denmark.
Thanks a lot JangBricks for this video (and all the others ;) )
I think I was like 6 or 7 years old as I got this set, and my god had I fun with it!!!!
My very personal opinion: earlier Lego sets like this one perhaps weren't as sturdy as modern ones, but there was always room enough to really play with the interiors, because they didn't bother to use "walls" which were only 1 stud large! And it was completely alright! If some pieces did fall apart, it wasn't as important as to have interior space to really play with your minifigs inside!
Today, you have spaceships which look very big from the outside, but where you barely can put one minifig inside.
Okay, they're sturdy, but you cannot do much more with them than make them swish.
Thanks for making a reveiw on this. I love the ship!
This was one of my 1st lego sets when i was like 6 or so now 30 or so years later this set is still base of a lot of my mixed lego. Although the set will never be completed again it started of my voyage into lego space. I loved and still love the cargo doors. I frequently made bigger ships where the doors became bigger and bigger. Even to the point of making multiple points of articulations in the doors , 2 levels , and a bigger ramp that also articulated in 2 points to facilitate the upper level in the bay. Still one of legos better sets.
I remember wanting this set when it came out.
SPACESHIP!!!!!! Great review! I really want this set!
Cool review, cool set, I love Lego space!
I love the space sets from the 70s -90s
Spaceship!!! :-)
Great review - boy, I love those classic space sets!
I vary much loved the stile of these sets, and I'm only 17, but I remember these sets
I'm a young person. But a got this Lego book called "Great Lego Sets." It comes with a mini version of this set. One of the best sets I ever have. :)
Wow i like this classic space theme.
928 Galaxy Explorer is a Classic Space set released in 1979. It contains a large spacecraft, a ground base with a landing pad and a small tower, a small space rover and four Classic Space astronauts (two red, two white).
This set was not available in the US, where the identical set 497 Galaxy Explorer was available instead. However, both spacecraft had the number "LL 928" printed onto their hulls.
First time ever seeing this and it looks pretty awesome :D
Thanks for the memories!
I love the SPACESHIP! part
this is set is awesome, wish i had it
I think this has to be my favourite Classic Space set.
I did have this set but gave my Lego away so don't have it anymore sadly. I recently got a couple of the bricks from this set in a job lot of bricks I bought from ebay.
The 2x1 brick with the space logo which looks brand new and also the 4x1 brick with the black stripes which is a bit scratched. it's easy to tell genuine bricks from the 1970/80s because of the moulding mark on the side. There were a few plain blue bricks as well. It's quite surprising what you get from ebay hauls, I have the top half of the cockpit to the Millenium Falcon which is only in 2 sets.
Hey JANG. You should make a huge classic space moc. Like a awesome station or ship. Using only bricks from classic space of course. I would LOVE to see what you could come up with.
I had this LEGO set exactly when I was 9 it was great
i love how the comment section is full of people telling their stories and experiences with this set :)
great review, as always
1:55 The reason that the large dish is not moveable is due to the fact that it is a ground-to-ground receiving dish - since those points don't move relative to each other. The dish can always point to the same distant base, for example one of the two smaller dishes on the Beta 1 Command Base (6970). The Space Supply Station (6930) has two fairly large non-moveable dishes.
love how you just had to "drive" the lil buggy inside the ship :D
Its ok man go ahead and play!
Amazing condition sets!
I just realized that my grandma has this set in her lego box at her hous O.O my uncle used to play with it
It's nice to see a spaceship that uses layering on the wings. It's something TLG doesn't really do that too much anymore (though Mega Bloks certainly does).
hey Jang, I just got this set in the post, I have been looking for this set for the last 4 years when I got back into lego, I did find 13 set from the classic space lego 1st series which ended about 86 maybe, I use to dream of having this when it was released but lego was very dear back then in N.Z., so happy to have it, mine is as tidy as yours which is awesome , cant believe I have one, mine wasn't even advertised, I just happened to be buying some other 80s set off someone on a on line trade site here in N.Z. and he just happened to have 2 of them and was selling the one with a box with a little damage and offered it to me, I,M SO EXSITED , going to build it now, hi fiving myself as my partner, she don't get it but that's cool, thanks andy
Nice set it's epic still today
