Great commentary, Leigh. I was actually one of those people who did not feel any comfort from the apparent civility in the debate because from the start it felt as though it was all terribly wrong. Firstly, because behind Vance's cordial and sympathetic demeanour was the lying, dangerous snake I knew him to be; and secondly because Walz's civility and agreement in too many instances, let Vance get away with murder! At this point, murder, only figuratively. 🤨😠

This is what I said after watching the debate. First it was “Who the hell is this guy on stage?” Then at the end, I turned to my partner and said “This man terrifies me more than Trump. He is evil incarnate and is one Big Mac away from the presidency”. (Credit Hannah Yoest for the Big Mac quip). I have had a feeling of dread ever since.

The word "smarmy" was invented to describe people like J.D. Vance. In 'My Fair Lady, there's a spoken piece by the Professor Doolittle character about someone who his protégé had successfully fooled: " Oozing charm from every pore, he oiled his way around the floor ...". And that, to me, perfectly describes J.D. Vance's performance at the debate.
That was exactly how I felt. Alarmed. If you didn't know what he was, it would be hard to guess that he is slick as a snake. And I apologize to snakes everywhere for the comparison.

From the $10+ million dollars to get him elected as Senator in Ohio, to almost every job J D has had(and didn't deserve or earn, and also, failed at miserably) since J D graduated from university. Peter Thiel is an immigrant from Germany. Peter Thiel is famous among Silicon Valley up starts with ambitions of starting massively successful businesses. His fame comes from the billions of dollars he has made from his various business ventures(which he has paid little to no taxes on) and his writings. He has written extensively about how democracy needs to die in favor of a system with an authoritarian leader who has no restraints on their power so "they can get things done faster". Peter Thiel's philosophy is about as Un-American as Vladimir Putin. This is the man who has shaped the actual ideals(not the performative ideals) of J D Vance and Elon Musk and the 3 of them should be kept as far away from the levers of power as possible!
