DD-WRT: Usb Hard Drive as Network Attached Storage (NAS)

- Today we set up a USB hard drive as network attached storage.
You can use Samba or FTP, and EXT3, Fat, or NTFS filesystems as long as you have a "big" build of dd-wrt.
I've used this to stream music, video, and backup data for months now, its certainly a cheap way to have a networked drive!
DD-WRT capable routers I've personally used:
amzn.to/2xx1gC5 Asus RT-AC68U
amzn.to/2JgVVFo Belkin Play
This tutorial is great when you have no Idea on how to set up USB NAS over a ddwrt router. Thanks
i'm not sure where you're seeing that, the big build definitely supports ntfs. and the std-usb-nas builds also support ntfs. but those are the only 2 builds as of right now that do. the big build has ext2/3, fat32 and ntfs support. the std-usb-nas has fat32 and ntfs support
The std build has no USB support built in, I don't know a lot about that router, if you can upgrade to a std-usb-nas, big, mega or some other build then you'll Benin business.
hi thanks for the tutorial .. do you have other videos making this to access the usb thru outside the house ? i mean using the internet?
Daniel Leonard: www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/other-downloads?path=betas%2F2015%2F07-09-2015-r27506%2F
if the link doesnt work, go to the ddwrt site, click downloads, then other downloads, then betas, then 2015, then the latest one, then your router type. broadcom-k26 is what the belkins I've featured before run, other atheros chips may have different builds available.
I set up the USB hard drive ok under the USB tab and then the Samba OK under the NAS tab and all looks well but I cannot for the life of me find that drive in my Win 7 PC or any other Win 7 PC I have on that router. Is there another step to this as I spent a lot of time in Win 7 trying to get the network to see it.
David Keeney, I'm not sure why I can't reply to your comment. but heres my answer:
Win7 can be a real pain, as it doesn't work with samba very nicely. I've found usually I have to directly type the routers ip into windows explorer, \\192.168.1.1 type business, it won't see the named samba server for anything.
There is a way to work around that to make it show up. but it requires installing optware and a much newer version of samba.
You can also try a kong build, they have samba3, which should in theory work properly out of the box.
Let me know if i can help get you set up in one of these directions!
Simple and effective! My Kong build doesn't seem to have 'big' in the info area you shared, but it still worked. Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r37015M kongac (09/23/18)
This worked on my NTFS drive using ddwrt kong build. I've been using your great vids to setup my ddwrt. Thanks!
Pro tip: you can watch series on Flixzone. Been using it for watching loads of movies recently.
@Dominic Thiago Definitely, I have been using Flixzone for since december myself =)
With a Usb cord? these belkin routers have a usb port, they're cheap too.
Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/15/14) kongac on a Netgear R6300V2.
--- /dev/sda1
Block device, size 1.819 TiB (2000395272704 bytes)
Windows BOOTMGR boot loader
NTFS file system
UUID 0E92044E0E92044E
Volume size 1.819 TiB (2000395272192 bytes, 3907022016 sectors)
/dev/sda1 mounted to /tmp/mnt/sda1
I can SEE the shares (\\Qutb\Vault and \\Qutb\Backup) in Windows File Explorer, but can't access them. Windows tells me it "cannot access \\Qutb\Backup". The Windows diagnostic is no help. I've rebooted the router and made sure the drive is spinning (and how can I keep it from spinning-down?). Also tried NET USE sharename and mapping a drive letter, just for grins. No joy....
Any suggestions? Thanks, in advance.
Where can I download the big build version of the dd-wrt firmware. I've only seen std.
trythisiptv can you make a video on how to back up your router settings via a usb flash drive for dd-wrt please? i am a visual learner and it would help a lot!. thanks-
You just go to backup and save to the USB stick. Or save to hard disk, then copy paste into the stick. It's just a tiny file. Kikobits
What's the best recommended file system for the drive? I've heard that NTFS is slow. Would UDF be a good choice? My router has an ESATA connection if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance!
+C Brooks I've usually used ext3, or ntfs. Most of the time the limiting factor for speed is the router could (which is where filesystem can make some difference) and also the network speed and hard drive itself. I'm now using a raspberry pi 2 as my nas device, as it has a much faster cpu than most routers
The mega build does not have ntfs support. The big build and std-usb-nas builds do. Is your drive powered via USB or does it have an external power supply? Some USB powered drives won't work, as the router won't put out enough amperage to run it.
I tried your procedure in my TP-link TL-MR3020. Icould not install the big version. It didnt show the disk info when I apply setting and also it doesn't have NAS tab. I installed "std" version as I couldn't find the "big" build in the "www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database".I also tried the one in the ftp link that you commented in one of the comments below. Can you help me?
Oh also, if you want to post links or anything hit up our website, link is in the description to the topic about this video. if you post over there you can post links and whatever you want
I have read several offerings to assist mounting a USB hard drive as a NAS. This is the easiest and simplest so far. I have Win7 and the Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NHv2 dd-wrt router and after following your video step-by-step, I was delighted to see the disk mounted under Network and it is working. I agree it may not work for every one but kudos to you for an excellent tutorial.
There is no BIG for my router, only MEGA and MINI (I have a netgear WNDR 4000). So I guess I'm pooched wrt to NTFS
Wait, I just looked at the website for dd-wrt and they say it only supports ext, ext2, fat32. So does the big version support NTFS or not?
AAHA! About the big build the guy talks on the video, that is not true!
I'm using STD build (standard build) and I'm able to use samba server with my external usb HD formatted in NTFS.
This was made over 4 years ago, I have no doubt the builds have changed, one of the "big" builds I saw a while back was over 27MB. but yes, your comment brings about a very true point, all this stuff has changed, your results may vary.
If you look tho, he's using year 2013 build. I'm using standard 2016 build on a tp link and Nas is supported
Great tutorial, I was busting my head trying to get this to work with the Buffalo version of DDWRT, I updated to the big version and it was easy as pie. Thanks a bunch.
thanks trythisiptv
my DD-WRT firmare is r29621 (5/10/16), in a mini router TPLINK WR710N with 8MB flash memory. And I cant see the same options, in fact, the way the automount worked is different, I formated my usb stick this way:
partition 1: ext2 700mb label: OPTWARE
partition 2: swap 124mb label: SWAP
partition 3: ext2 6.3GB label: DATA
can you lead me to the proper way to do this? I want to install optware too, the wiki page seems very old!
what every mildly niche tutorial video should be like 10/10
I just added a micro SD 32GB USB adapter on my Cisco E3000 DDWRT flashed router. After mounting the USB it finds it no problem but does not show in the path under samba. Only /dev, /opt and -. I can see the (USB) server in windows explorer but can't read or write to it as it tells me I need permissions to carry out the task. Also, I get the message that the server does not accept remote requests. Any ideas?
mine doesn't have the option to mount it to /mnt, opt, or jffs. i tried mounting it manually with #mount /dev/discs/disc0/disc /mnt but after i access it through NAS it's only a couple megabytes in size. I'm using the kong firmware, it also has NTFS support. im also sure that my usb device is located at /dev/discs/disc0/disc. My drive also shows up in the USB tab on the gui. im not sure what im doing wrong.

Thanks for the video, just flashed my netgear r7000 to dd-wrt and have had the usb on my last few routers, but never really understood how to get them to work. Your video was excellent. :D
not by default, but you can open the samba ports (137,138,139,389,445) via port forwarding, just set it to forward to the router ip, and then it would work over the WAN port too, be wary though, this would give anyone on the internet access to any shared data on your network, as in it is probably a really terrible idea security wise.
I am using a Netgear R7800 with DD-WRT v3.0-r34900M kongat (02/14/18). The router is showing each drive partition, but my Wiindows (10 File Explorer does not show the drives. Any suggestions?
Have you tried typing \\192.168.whateveryourroutersipis into explorer? sometimes windows doesn't show the networked shares for some reason. I need to investigate and see if there is some setting or some way to get it to show all the shares
@@trythistv Thanks. It let me see the drives.
Awesome! I'll look for a better solution sometime, but at least you can use your storage now. Also, you can map that to a network drive, I've got my storage set up that way so it looks like a hard drive in explorer. works great for now!
My router restart when writting on the USB. Any ideas?
Very useful.
I dont know if you can answer this as I dont think is a NAS subj et..but here it goes: I want to assign each network user a private partition in the attached disk.
How to do this ? (the 1TB disk is currently formatted as NTFS)
No problem, If you want smarter drive mounting I'd suggest moving to a kong build, he includes a script that automatically mounts multiple drives to different places. plus his builds still support optware
I reflashed to dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_big-nv60k.bin and now just get : Disk Info

You said in your video to make sure that you had a "Big" build loaded in the router. I have dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega-nv60k.bin loaded in mine. Isn't Mega and big the same or are they different. I am a noob so be kind as this is all confusing to me. My router sees my NTFS drive but says :Not mounted - Unsupported file system or disk not formated. It is formatted and has files on it that the computer reads just fine. What am I doing wrong??
Hi... I'm using "Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/07/10) mega", and NOTHING seems to be working for me in terms of NAS (storage). I've formatted the media with .ext2 and .ext3. The router does not see my USB devices. I've also tried different devices as well with no success. I've even SSHed and there is nothing to mount. Please help.
NTFS does not seem to be supported either. I'm using a Linksys 350N router. Any ideas? The format is not important to me.
there is a dd-wrt firmware for the dir-825, its on the ddwrt ftp server in its own folder, there is instructions if you google "dir-825 dd-wrt" its the first link. you can then upgrade to a newer version which can be found on the ftp links in that article.
I'm not sure if that build will support ntfs or not, it is an atheros chipset i believe in the dir-825, so you cant just use a different build, it is specific to the chipset in there. get dd-wrt installed and give it a shot, it may have ntfs.
I've found the device you have. If i've got the right one then its got one ethernet and one usb correct? it only has 4MB of flash, which isnt enough to fit a samba server or ftp server into, it isnt enough to get the filesystem drivers in. the device sadly is not capable of NAS or much, as it was intended as a "Travel router"
I'm sorry, but at this point in time there is no way to use your device as a NAS
well I have the mega load on mine and when I do exactly what you say in the video nothing happens at 1:20. No info comes up... and others on the internet are saying there is no NTFS support, even their website says so: go to the main website and look at their wiki and then tutorials it says under usb storage that it only supports ext and fat32
Hi, i have little problem i have TP-Link TL-MR3420 and i have
Firmware Version
DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/25/13) std - build 21061
But, i still cannot connect my usb i try with my flash drive 4gb but its not recognizable from router? Any ideas i mean i have all but no NAS option.
The mega build has no NTFS filesystem drivers. It supports ext2 and ext3, as well as fat. The big build has all of those plus NTFS. If you can avoid using ntfs and use ext3 or fat instead there are noticeable performance advantages. But if you defiantly want NTFS then switch to a big build.
Do you think a drive like this "NAS" could run services also? I wanted to put Logitech Media Server on an external 2TB drive I have....
Yep, the NAS build also has ntfs support, however it lacks ext2 and ext3 support (Linux filesystems) and being a Linux user, i appreciate being able to access those. Thank you very much for pointing that out, I had forgotten about the NAS builds having ntfs support.
Just flashed my first DD-WRT router and added USB nas. Your video was exactly what I needed. Thanks for making this vid. It really helped. Cheers
what language are you speaking? I'm still on DOS.
Cuz
Michael McGuire Wez speeking Swahelli... ;) DD-WRT rocks... lol
2. Inflation nirvana? So it would seem. There are virtually no pressures down the supply chain. OR if there are any pressures, they are downward pressures. Just keep in mind what it took to get us here, in terms of feeble U.S. and world growth. And keep in mind that since 1998 oil prices have risen from $14/barrel to about $100/barrel, the price of gold has risen from $271/oz in 2001 to $1,200/oz today, and the price of a Big Mac has increase about 70% since 2003. But inflation is not a problem...
Are the USB mounted drives accessible from outside your LAN? (It would be great to access my media files while traveling or to pull up pictures and songs from my iPhone)
i am using a linksys wrt54gs with v4.0 firmware as a repeater and i dont u see the nas setting can i still access iomega drive plugged in it or hav i got to plug into my main router?
thanks
DD-WRT doesnt have a version 4.0 that im aware of. you mean the router is version 4.0?
the wrt54gs 4.0 has only 4mb of flash, it is possible you're on a mini build, which probably has no usb or nas support. oddly, it also has no usb ports.
how exactly have you attached this drive to the router?
i'd reboot the router, a 30/30/30 will reset the usb settings. just a simple unplug, wait about 10 seconds then replug should get the ball rolling.
Will this support 2.5" Hard Drives? My N450 is see's it, but can not access it Is it a power limitation factor?
Yes, it will work with just about any drive imaginable. However as you mentioned, power is a big factor, self powered drives (just a usb cable to connect) can overload the routers power supply and cause the drive to not work properly or possibly even cause the router to become unstable.
I wouldn't think that just one drive would be enough to do that, but i guess that would depend on the power requirements of your drive.
trythisiptv I bought a USB Y cable, one for the drive, other for power, router will just keep resetting if I use that cable.
I was able to access one partition 300MB of the 500 GIG drive lol.
So I am guessing I have to format the drive, I have no idea what format it requires.
I think DD-WRT is worthless for this router and the factory original firmware has more options/choices
Great video although my mega build doesn't include Samba? WTF? Option isnt even there and my device supposedly supports it.
Feltes45 what size build do you have? mini perhaps? some of the smaller builds don't include samba for size reasons.
@JP Graba
I have a couple drives set up like this, NTFS is one of the worst options for filesystems in all reality. its the most resource intensive, which on a little router like these, means its the slowest by far.
I have one drive with "services" installed on it, in the form of optware. I have several things running, I'd reccomend a different filesystem though, for optware it has to be a linuxy fs, like ext2 or ext3, and both are excellent choices.
I'm still a bit confused...
Do I have any options in my home n/w and my 1GB NAS- we are windows, XP, W8.1 and iPads, Android Matricom gBox, android tablets. Would formatting the drive to FAT32 do anything. I am truly linux illiterate. My router is a Netgear WNDR4000 dual 2.4 and 5Mhz and when use your instructions and plug my USB drive in I get the below iterations...
--- /dev/discs/disc0/disc
Block device, size 931.5 GiB (1000204886016 bytes)
DOS/MBR partition map
Partition 1: 931.5 GiB (1000202241024 bytes, 1953520002 sectors from 63, bootable)
Type 0x07 (HPFS/NTFS)
Windows NTLDR boot loader
NTFS file system
Volume size 931.5 GiB (1000202240000 bytes, 1953520000 sectors)
Status: Not mounted - Unsupported file system or disk not formated
Status: Not mounted - Unsupported file system or disk not formated
JP Graba that just means your router has no ntfs support. Formatting to fat32 would allow it to be recognized, but the optware services (torrent client, media server, etc.) Wouldnt be installable. However, all of your devices should suppprt either samba (windows file sharing) or ftp. I stream videos and such to my android tablets and wii using ftp/samba, so thay is a very viable option.
trythisiptv maybe I can format half the drive ext2 ext3 and the other half fat 32.... On the ext 3 I can place my logitech optware....
echomaster905 that would work, you don't even need half the drive though, about 4gb would be plenty, you just need enough space for some extra Linux programs and libraries, you can use the fat32 for storage.
trythisiptv Going to try this tonight - will update this post as to my success
Does anyone know how to set it up for ProFTPD?
I am using a different build which doesn't have samba.

Jacob White have you tried your settings logging in with the username "admin" and no password? thats how you've got it configured by the look of things.
put a space after admin and put your password desired.
for example:
admin test
would allow you to login with the username "admin" and the password "test"
I figured it out. I didn't have the credentials configured properly lol. Works like a champ even remotely.
Thanks for the interesting info. I'd like to do exactly what your video shows except with an old(er) Hitachi 3640U external hard drive. The drive only comes with the power cord and USB connection (which I currently have connected to the USB port on my smart tv). My router only has Ethernet ports- NO USB! Help??
Kevin Hilley You'd need a different router (pretty cheap) or a hard drive enclosure that has ethernet (expensive), there are models like I'm using available for around $30.
I'm using either a Belkin Share, Sharemax, Play or PlayHD, they're f7d3301 f7d3302 f7d4301 and f7d4302 models I believe
I'd give you the link but youtube is not letting me post links. Can someone help me?
I was trying to use the mega build because someone told me that was the only one with NTFS support. It could see all my fat and ext2/3 drives but a NTFS drive it wouldn't even acknowledge being plugged in.
Drove me nuts. Figured it out, decided to start making some of these videos, ddwrt is insanely powerful, but sometimes finicky.
I just finished setting up my router to run squid as a caching proxy to accelerate my horribly slow internet.
Took me a while to get it working lol
Can you make tutorial to make cache proxy feature i didn't get but sounds like good nd i like to make it fast internet
worked good for me even with the new ddwrt
Hi mate thanks for replying I've used ethernet as cable into lan port...just had idea to plug drive into wan port of router...would it work do u think?
Ah, so this hard drive has an ethernet port? i've got a drive that has a similar function.
you'll want that plugged into the lan port like you currently have it, wan port probably wouldnt do anything for you.
try going into the router admin page, find out what ip the router has assigned to the drive (if youre using dd-wrt you can see the connected devices on the status page you'd get at 192.168.1.1 or whatever your routers ip is)
then when you find that out, try going there in your web browser, my drive that has ethernet has an admin page where you have to turn on the nas function separately, if its connected with ethernet cable then the drive must have some sort of hardware to act as a network device.
trythisiptv soz mate i was at a frenz place...its a iomega 1tb network drive plugd into wrt54gs router which is being used as a repeater...wot i am trying to achieve is the drive and wrt54gs sat in a corner by themselves and being able to access the drive across my network either hardwired or wireless plus i am running ubuntu 12.04.
cheers
I watched your video and get my seagate 1TB ext hard drive to work on my linksys E3000 router, however if I reboot the router I get a message on my computer saying " the path for the drive cannot be found" can you assist me to solve this problem.
is the drive showing mounted after the reboot in the usb tab of your routers admin page?
trythisiptv
yes it is still showing mounted in the usb tab, however it is not showing up as a network device on my computer after reboot. I had map it as a drive and after reboot there is a red X displaying on it. I really need to solve this problem.
Noss Burton (I'm assuming you're using windows) can you access it by going to \\192.168.1.1 (or whatever your routers ip is) in windows explorer? some newer versions of windows do not tolerate samba shares very well.
Do you have an updated process? The screens have changed a bit in the latest version.
dd-wrt.v24-23838_NEWD-2_K3.x-big-RT-N66U.trx
DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/29/14) big
(SVN revision 23838)
i do not, however I will definely check into it tomorrow, and make a updated video with the new process, I've just acquired a new router to use for testing purposes, I'll drop you a line as soon as I've got the new video ready!
thanks.
I'm ready to activate the internal SD on my Asus n66u. It is pretty good for the $
Hans S I believe I have found whats different. I just ran through the setup, and it was identical. all the pages were exactly the same.
Because I have a K2.6 build, and you're on a K3.X build, I'll be trying out kernel 3.0 soon, but I have not tried it at all, I will report back once I have a router running 3.0
cool thanks.
I figured it out though. Got it running on my ASUS k3 build with the internal SD and 2 thumb drives. Set two for the samba and 1 for the FTP store. It appears to work well with True-crypt media also.
Appreciate the training vids.
Thank you for the video, everything is working but I'm trying to use my NAS as a uPNP media server. Can DD-WRT work as a media server for all devices on the network?
armueller2001 DD-WRT does have a upnp function, I have not done much with it personally, but optware gives you a lot more options when it comes to configuring a media server.

Where is the link for this version you have? I have the same one but mine is std and not big. Is there a 2014 one as well?
There is a 2014 version, you have the same belkin router? if so, go to:
ftp :// ftp. dd-wrt .com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2014/03-29-2014-r23838/broadcom_K26/
(remove the spaces)
oh, forgot to mention, then grab the file named dd-wrt.v24-23838_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin
should be the 3rd one down from the top.
Riviera Valdez No, no it is mot. If you look there red is on the right while mine is on the left. Good eye though
I am using (DD-WRT v3.0-r30796 (10/25/16). Does it support NTFS files system?
Danial khan generally yes, but technically the builds are almost always beta, so things can be different from one device to the next, even if the version number is the same.
IE; if the router running v3 doesn't have USB ports, they probably would have removed that coding to make it less bug prone and more compact file size
thanks! dd-wrt is such a puzzle but you made it easy.
why in my v24 mega.bin no have samba to activate
Good video...works perfectly. Thanks!
i just want to say thank you i have my 3 tb working perfect thanks to your tutorial
I tried cycling the power with no results so I did a 30/30/30. Still no luck so I reflashed with Tomato USB and everything works just fine now. Thanks for your effort to help me I really appreciate it. :-)
Thank you for the video. Very helpful. Since you made this video 6 years ago, I am wondering if DD-WRT will support NTFS without having the 'big' build? I am using Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r40559 std (08/06/19) and have not found a 'big' version for this firmware. Thanks.
They don't seem to have any info on the 3.0 versions features and I bricked a few routers trying to get the early 3.0 versions working so I need to try to recover them or get some new test devices, The 2.6 versions have NTFS in the STD USB NAS version and Mini USB NAS as well as the big version. Worst it can do is not work, what router hardware are you using?
@@trythistv Thank you for the really prompt answer. I am using a Netgear R6400 v2.
Looking at the size of the firmware file I really suspect that it has NTFS out of the box, the 6400 has 128MB flash rom so its plenty capable, the image to install is around 27MB which (if my brain is working properly) is larger than the big builds were for the Belkin routers I had so many of.
@@trythistv Thank you. I am having trouble getting it to work. I will give it another shot later today to see if I can have better luck.
Sounds good! Let me know how it goes
Great job, I am using WD 1tb connected via powered USB on a linksys e4200 firmware build 21286 ( DD-WRT v24-sp2 4/15/13 std-usb-nas ) As you might notice I am not using the big build , however it still work on the NTFS great job again
trythisiptv I've a TP-link tl-wrd4300 router and the build is std build. I tried to search for big build but i couldn't find it. Could you please help me?
How did you connect the drive to the router?
Thank you! Logged in for the first time just to thank you for the awesome tutorial.
what could I use for a d-link dir-825? it has 8MB of flash, near enough. I really want to use it for ntfs, but my linux skills lack. thanks.
how can i set up a hard drive to use it as a time machine on my mac?
how can i get a big build for my dd-wrt
The naming scheme has changed to some extent, most filesystems are now included in nearly all versions as far as I'm aware. I would just get Mega, or whatever the main version is for your device
Hey nice work with this video. This had me up and running with the drive in seconds.
Liam D Awesome! glad to hear it helped you!
Ok I will give that a try. Thanks for the reply. My frustration factor was running high. LOL
Thank you. This was much easier than I had thought. My NTFS drive worked with my STD build on a WNDR3700v2
is this local only?
So what about apple computers and time machine ??
I have not done much with apple machines or time machine.
I have a friend that's messed with it, and its not very cooperative from what we could tell.
trythisiptv MY new router was given to me by a friend it was a Netgear 4300 something..
just reverted to factory firmware .. now it works with time machine.. Thanks anyways nice video ^^ Cheerers
This is indeed very helpful and it made my configuration very smoothly! Thank you so much!
Sabaki Thanks, thats what I aim for.
Thanks for this video! I was confused on how you get this to work! Thanks!
Can you upgrade to a big build? Or is not supported on some routers? I have a Netgear wndr3700 v1 and can only find the std build for the latest version.
If not, whats the best way to maximize compatibility? My home network contains Mac, Windows, Linux, PS3, XBox 360, Apple TV... I'd like them all to be able to access the same movie files on the NAS but the only drive partition format that seems to be universally compatible, and without a 4GB file size limit, is NTFS.
Go ext3! It'll appear the same to networked devices regardless of filesystem, as long as the router supports the fs type you're good. Most people have little Linux experience, I try to make my videos driven so anyone can make use of this stuff, but since you have some Linux experience, definetly go ext3. I hope that makes sense.
And the wdnr3700 v1 has an atheros CPU, so there won't be a big build, it may already have ntfs support, or it may never have it. But either way, ext3 is going to be far faster and far better as a nas drive.

Thanks! I have always been confused about whether or not the partition format relates to each OS being able to read it, or if it was a matter of only the router needing to be able to read it (and all other OSes being able to use their own protocols to read it). I'll jump onto my linux box and get my HD formatted with ext3 and give this a go again.
Good deal! Yea, with it set up sharing over samba or something similar the filesystem only has to be readable by the host machine (the router in this case) and the clients just have be able to use whatever protocol is being used to share the files, samba, NFS, ftp, etc. I use ext3 on my router has drives, I get about 4-5 times the speeds I got with ntfs. Let me know how it works for you!
+trythisiptv Ok it detected my drive, but the drive is shown to be located at "/dev/sda1" on the USB tab, but on the NAS tab it only sees the "/mnt/sda1 " on the list of partitions. Isn't /mnt just a temp mount location?
Regardless, I am now able to Samba to it :) Thanks. The strange thing though is that the Samba network drive name is the name of my router, and not the value I put in the "Server String" parameter... which from what I understand should be the network share name.
Oh yeah, and also apparently the latest std build supports NTFS, but I though it was not working properly because of the router name as the network share name issue. Although I will go with ext3 since you claim that you're seeing better transfer performance. Thanks for the great video and for answering people's questions.
Netgear WNDR3400
Excellent tutorial, thanks
how do i add a internal drive as a nas
Your router has an internal hard drive? If so, it should be recognized as an attached device. If you're talking about repurposing an old internal drive into NAS, you can get a USB drive enclosure and connect that to your router.
or you could install the internal drive in a PC, and set up a headless linux server on the PC and use that as NAS, but it would need to be on 24/7 to really be useful
Thanks for the vid
Will i be able to access it without using my networks internet?
It will be accessible from inside your network, so any computer, tablet or game console inside the network could access it.
You could password protect it if you didnt want everyone on your home network to have access.
if you want access from a remote location like to access your documents at home while at work, then you would have to enable port forwarding for a few ports
trythisiptv oh i see which ports should i enable?
If yours using ftp 21. If you're using samba then 137, 138, 139, 389, and 445
Okay thank you very much! :)
It works! Thank you!
thanks for the help! :D
Thanks !
Thank you.
Can you make a tutorial for tomato shibby firmware
+Salvador Ramon I've made some, they are in this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLFxBeYBP-WdkskDY6FFR9ugOQ4MLK5i7p.html
If the topic you want isn't discussed, let me know and I'll make a video for it!
thanks for the reply, but where exactly is the video, were you talk about USB hard drive network attachable ?
I haven't made one on tomato for that, but I will make one and have it out probably early next week, monday probably
+trythisiptv I already figured it out thanks though, I have another question, the transfer rate is really slow, do you know how I can make it fast? Right now it's at 1md per second
+Salvador Ramon it depends a lot on your router and wireless hardware in your device, my phone has pitiful transfer rates over wireless, but my pc and other devices with better hardware (wireless n or gigabit wired) can max out the usb connection to the router
