इस वाद्य का नाम तानपुरा है। इसे पहले तंबूरा कहते थे। माना जाता है की इस वाद्य का आविष्कार तुम्बुरु नामक विद्वान ने किया था। इस वाद्य का उपयोग मुख्य रूप से भारतीय शास्त्रीय गायन में किया जाता है। इसमें चार तार होती हैं। 1st तार मुख्य रूप से मंद्र सप्तक के पंचम यानी (प़) स्वर पे मिलाई जाती है, लेकिन राग के चलन के अनुसार इसे अन्य स्वर जैसे म तथा नि पर भी मिलाया जाता है। 2nd & 3rd तार जोड़े की तार होती हैं जिन्हे मध्य सा स्वर पर मिलाया जाता है। अंतिम तार यानी 4th तार को मंद्र सा स्वर पर मिलाया जाता है।

Both are two totally different instruments but sometimes people get confused between tanpura, sitar and Veena.
