Sleep on pillows made in Singapore Wrapped in comforters Sweating through sheets Drinking coffee in the morning Floating on Airplanes across the vast seas And your house is made of wood Central air, central heat You got your furniture of particle board Your doors are locked for, for safety And you walk in leather shoes Pants of denim, a black cotton sweatshirt And you do what you do because doing can start to form a habit And you drink all night long And you sleep through the morning And if something doesn't break I'm just gonna go, go fucking insane And you sweep up the floor when it's dirty You do the dishes, when the sink's full And when the refrigerator's empty well it's time, it's time, it's time, it's time to go the store You put your books on a shelf Clothes arranged in the closet You hang the things on the wall that you don't wanna be so easily forgotten I hate these songs I hate the words That the singer is singing to me I hate this melody I hate this stupid fucking drum beat But I'm not gonna tell anyone What I'm really thinking about Keep them conversations on the surface Just keep on smiling Just keep on saying Everything's gonna be alright It's gonna be alright [x2] Alright [x11]
One of my favorite songs ever in life. As a musician and a fan. Because these lyrics are facts of life. And I feel it now more than ever and I been a fan for over 17 years.
this song is just massive, with the energy it puts out there, the desperation of the lyrics and the duel of the guitars; it's just incredible, and i can do nothing but bask in its glory and cower before it.
This started off as a reply but I’m posting as a comment. The problem with these labels society dishes out are that you dare not deviate from what others perceive you to be, lest you be criticized and condemned. Fuck that. To me, punk isn’t a look. It’s a feeling. It’s not a physical style as much as it is an internal state of being. Punk is: this is me. Take it or leave it. Sell outs are the ones that are fixated on image. They care more about what people see as opposed to what they put out. Punk is ever evolving and rarely what anyone in the public eye believes it to be. Anyone can dress the part, but it takes a certain type of person to truly be a punk. I mean really, what the fuck would punk be if it stayed the same as it did in its early days? Punk changes as society and the world we live in changes. Thank you Laura Jane Grace for being you. Thank you for being yourself and for opening yourself up in an attempt to connect with those that see and feel your value. I doubt you will ever see this, but your eyes can see what so many others try to ignore and even hide. You are a beautiful woman and an intelligent soul with so much insight and wisdom to put out into the world around you. Keep kicking ass, rocking out, and being who you are because we need people just like you in this life. Too many people are fakes.
this against me! song reminds me of my house...you sweep and mop the floors when it's dirty, you do the dishes, when the sink's full...and when the refridgerators empty well it's time, it's time it's time, it's time to go to the store...totally my house.
This music is so beautiful, I feel a connection to every song by them. It's just like how I feel about everything.. Against Me! has really helped a lot with my feelings about life and the world. Thank you Laura, for making such wonderful music, and may you continue :)
Why would anyone call AM! sellouts? This is what happens to good bands, they start to make money. They start to polish and hone their sound. The more people that listen to this the better. Then maybe we'd not have so much Justin Beiber and that kinda B-S.
This is a beautiful depiction and discription of what happens when you're only going through the motions, when the things that should matter don't, and what causes those little reckless desires we all have at some point just for an interruption of the monotonous experience.
As far as the selling out goes...I would never have heard of Against Me! or Tom Gabel in Pittsburgh, PA had they not done something "wrong." I'll take what I can get. If you prefer the folk rock, listen to that, if you prefer the old stuff, listen to that. I like it all, I will continue to listen to what sounds sweet to me.
So I just saw these guys perform at my college, and at the part where he says, "I hate this stupid fucking drum beat," the drummer flipped him off. I lol'd. These guys were pretty awesome live, and I only know a few of their songs! I think they have a new fan =)
This video is from Transition Video Magazine Issue 1. It has tons of stuff on it, done by the doods that made the "We're Never Going Home." DVD. Go to w w w dot transitionvm dot com.
Right on man, and apparently they've been playing loads of old songs at their shows since the new album, so they haven't completely conformed to the mainstream, phew.
probably because some producer was like 'why is your voice so raspy...what the hell is wrong with you?' some people keep complaining about the band changing/selling out. the reality is that they didn't change, they just want more people to hear them, and in order to make that happen, they had to make some compromises, which included allowing other people to have more command over the way their music sounds. its a tough trade to make, but they still don't care much about money.
I call this "sentence song" to my fianceé cause he introduced it to me & i can never remember the name. but the song that's made out sentences you could just use in every life
I have never understood why these guys get coined "sell out" more than any other band....ever. So, they signed to a major, their music hasent changed, their idealism hasent changed, their lyrics haven't changed just because they are on a major. I'm tired of these "punk" kids, who most are living off their parents dime telling people that a band isn't punk because they are trying to make money. Against Me! Haven't changed because they are on a major, fuck, they haven't changed at all.
punks are a bunch of fucking punks and they will talk shit because they are punks they dont understand what its really all about yet thats why they are punks fuck punk rock fuck em all and probably fuck you :-)
they are the band that soon to be punks like because its not an offensive introduction to punk and it SLOWLY eases you into the real stuff dont get mad though, it hink that they are okay, even though they sold out big time
Indeed, this is the area where I think the European countries have right. Unlike in the Americas, the Europeans stand up for what they believe and the government is afraid of their people. While in America, it's the people being in fear of the government. It should be the opposite, we're living in our respective countries and we, the people, should be governing what goes on politically.
I like music. I like Against Me! I shouldn't have to justify why or have to defend them. They rock and put on a great live show. I saw them with the Foo in the Peg and walked away more excited about them then the main act.
The members of Against Me! are artists wouldn't you agree? Through time artists change things and there is nothing you can do about it. I like New Wave, I wouldnt say its the best but I wouldn't go out trashing one of my favorite bands because I'm a stupid loser like diabeticvagina either
Oh, wow, thanks. To be brutally honest it isn't too hard to do. And Kaybeecee, I don't know what you're smoking, but countries in Europe, especially France and that nearby area, protest a lot of stuff they don't like. They aren't sheep if they stand up for what they think is right and they are definitely not sheep of the govenment if they government is scared of the population. They are democratic, a lot more democratic than most countries.
I have to admit, I like their new music, but I do have the feeling that they sort of are growing away from their views. I am not saying this because they signed to a major label, and I am not part of any punk scene, because there isn't a single scene that would accept me anyway. Perhaps they are still true to their views, but it doesn't seem to be expressed that way. I mean, they used to be anarchist, and clearly, they are no longer. I am not an anarchist, but I believe in being loyal.
look, I have been in the business for quite some time, these days, saying the band is a sell out is just another trend, you can fight and argue all you want, but face it, its no different than a fashion trend, maybe they did sign a record label, you would too if someone flashed a couple hundred grand in your face.. anyone would, don't even try to disagree, all these kids are posers that follow what others say, as if they need to fit in, against me is unique, and you cannot argue with that.
ok sure, they make alot of money now THATS why I said they sold out! You clearly dont even know what their old music was about if you like the new wave, they were anarcho punks, they didnt give a shit about the mainstream music and thats what they sang about! "and when it came time to throw bricks threw that starbucks window, you left me all alone!" thats good music, music that has meaning and that has passion! NOw its all about the money thats why it sucks!
i agree. my opinion of selling out is a situation like this: you listen to a CD and it's NOTHING like their old stuff. the music and lryics suck now, like it took them 2 minutes to write the song. if the effort is still put into the music, they haven't sold out. so i don't think green day has sold out either, because the american idiot album amazing. it took them years to put that together. they're still loyal to their fans.
In my opinion he's talking about modernity, monotony, and the search for meaning in life where we find ourselves so nicely pampered -- to death. I also think the criticisms he describes are a self-sketch. They seem intentionally directed inward -- not so much outward at all. In a sense, it's "fight club -- the song."
How am I proving your point? I provided a reasonable argument as to why they deserve criticism, and I'm not Mr. Scene spokesman. Their music now is obviously lacking something their old music had. I'm not denying they're no longer talented, but they have DRASTICALLY changed their sound, and in a bad way.
But they did tame their message. Not in song, but in action of their careers. I really wouldn't care if it wasnt for the fact that they sing songs and built a reputation completely against all the things they are doing now. Fucking playing festivals that are sponsored by sweatshop clothing and soda companies. you can't escape the hypocrisy
they did not sellout whatsoever. they changed their sound a little but it still sounds great. they still rage against the government and write good songs so you don't have a valid point calling them sellouts. you probably just said that cause you heard it from someone elese
i dont care that theyre popular. im happy for them. i think its great that they are getting more money. they can do what they want to do as musicians, but their music HAS changed.and i have read their lyrics on new wave and theyre interesting. Stop! is the worst song theyve ever put out by the way.
i dont care that theyre popular. im happy for them. i think its great that they are getting more money. but their music HAS changed. they went from punk rock/folk punk to POP. i give them props for making a good pop album, i didnt think that was possible, but i still dont like their new style.
I hate you, I wish i could have seen them even before eternal cowboy. If you still live in Gainesville i recommend seeing the Cobra Skulls 10/31 at Fest 7, they sound a little like AM! and are one of the best local bands around
They didn't sell out but they just make a not so great album. If they put out such a crap album when not on Sire, I would dislike it as much. It JUST SO HAPPENS that when they go to Sire they decide to put out this real big crap album.
this is probably dead geeky of me, but i did this in music tech last year and its cuz vinyl has frequencies on it that cds at the moment can't handle!there are frequencies that we can't hear but our brain can interpret!science lesson over!!
no, that isn't what it is. It is sad when a band builds its reputation on being truly independant and anti-capitalist, and even writes songs about these subjects, then turns around and signed to a universal/emi owned label then plays the Pepsi Smash festival.
Is signing to a major label "selling out" or is that just what whiney kids say whenever their favorite indie band goes mainstream and finds more success? As long as they don't tame their message or censor themselves they haven't sold out.
stealing the album pretty much just rips off the band, because before they make any money from it, they have to pay back the label, and then the rest of the money is theirs..... so you are stealing their profit.
Hypocrisy is a part of life, everyone is a hypocrite in one way or another. As long as they don't *ONLY* sing about useless crap like love and randomness like other bands, I'll still respect em'.
These guys effing rock!! Check out their KYTE CHANNEL where they produce THEIR VERY own content via mobile!! You can view it direct from their Official Myspace....check it out!
sorry man, but I also hate New Wave. Searching for a former clarity was ok though. New Wave isn't a bad album, but it was definatly dissapointing to find out how much they mellowed out.
i didnt say that in the first place, although it isn't. the attitude in the songs is the same but the words ring hollow when the band sold out so very very hard
@RobRedbeard23 Is Fight Club the only movie you've ever seen that portrays an internal struggle? I can think of better and closer examples of inner turmoil in book ans film.....
I work with a bunch of teenagers and I put this on and they all left the room. It worked like a charm.
Same thing happened when I put these songs on around my fellow teens back in the day.
Reasons they make me wear ear buds at work.
@@matthewamuso you and I both.
Same. I always throw on good music when I want “silence”. 😂
Probably has nothing to do with them being teens
Sleep on pillows made in Singapore
Wrapped in comforters
Sweating through sheets
Drinking coffee in the morning
Floating on Airplanes across the vast seas
And your house is made of wood
Central air, central heat
You got your furniture of particle board
Your doors are locked for, for safety
And you walk in leather shoes
Pants of denim, a black cotton sweatshirt
And you do what you do
because doing can start to form a habit
And you drink all night long
And you sleep through the morning
And if something doesn't break
I'm just gonna go, go fucking insane
And you sweep up the floor when it's dirty
You do the dishes, when the sink's full
And when the refrigerator's empty
well it's time, it's time, it's time, it's time to go the store
You put your books on a shelf
Clothes arranged in the closet
You hang the things on the wall that you don't wanna be so easily forgotten
I hate these songs
I hate the words
That the singer is singing to me
I hate this melody
I hate this stupid fucking drum beat
But I'm not gonna tell anyone
What I'm really thinking about
Keep them conversations on the surface
Just keep on smiling
Just keep on saying
Everything's gonna be alright
It's gonna be alright [x2]
Alright [x11]

Saw them in Winnipeg. Greatest show, greatest place I've been, greatest time I've ever had, in my whole life.

I can't believe that I've never seen this music video before.
I think everyone that watches this felt that the first time. It came out of nowhere.
Boy oh boy, this is such an awesome tune. Happy winter solstice for tomorrow all.

I'm singing/screaming/crying and my boyfriend comes back and says "I left you for a second"... I just love this song

Saw them last night the the Foo Fighters, both bands were awesome.
I’m a new(ish) fan and I was really confused as to who that was in the video at first
Lmao, she looks so much prettier now
Love this song
i have only one word for against me... wonderful music! :D
thats definitely two words :/
Attempted this song a couple days ago on my drums, ended up with a hurting arm :P
This video makes me restless.
the greatest band, the greatest song. i love it.
I call this "sentence song" to my fianceé cause he introduced it to me & i can never remember the name. but the song that's made out sentences you could just use in every life
such an awsome song and i love the vid........
The people on the PIX board had a hissy fit.

Uhhh the new lyrics are all about like, him being trans....
So are all the old lyrics.
Example: Ocean
Because "Total Clarity" had absolutely nothing to do with that, at all.
punks are a bunch of fucking punks and they will talk shit because they are punks they dont understand what its really all about yet thats why they are punks fuck punk rock fuck em all and probably fuck you :-)
its from the album "As the Eternal Cowboy"

"ClicheGuervara" : damn right, amen to that...
The best song I've heard in awhile. I love against me! enuff said
Theyve been one of the best bands out there since 01. All the haters need to get a life.
they are the band that soon to be punks like because its not an offensive introduction to punk and it SLOWLY eases you into the real stuff

this video has been out for so long and thrash unreal almost has as much views within a couple of weeks =[ new fans need to listen to old stuff
Their new CD is garbage, i hate to say it... i've been a fan of against me for a while and they did sell out for new wave.. :(
This is a awesome fucking song.I dont give 1 fuck about what anyone has to say about it.
You guys have a good day now :)
as much as i like the new shit, i completely agree
they didn't sell out, their sound just isn't as good as it used to be.
i used to go to the farmhouse, i guess it was near the end of it. 02, 03? i wonder if we ever met.
but they could've sold out and still played good music. Go ahead, sell out, just don't start playing crappy music.
what the hell!the singer is singin to u but you hate the song what the hell!what ever i like them and the song
ok still good wat ever the band r still them maybey they had to maybey they didnt its the music thats important
This band rocks my socks! Wish Tom rocked more than just my socks, if ya feel what I'm tryin to say here.... :)
I completely agree with you, top commenter, it's that way no matter what
the thing about new wave is that its no "disco before the breakdown" but it somehow grows on you
Having a desk job. Set to music.
Yes the french stand up for what they believe but they sit down when a firm breeze comes.
it's not like i havnt heard the word a thousand times, i just don't know what it means.
This isn't really that bad? People make such a big deal of nothing sometimes, wankers.
Not to mention one of the agreements was the record company could not touch the album.
Something about this is very....Green Day "Longview"ish. Maybe just the couch scenes?
i love against me sound and i want their new album
they put on a fucking AMAZING show! i love these guys live
i sleep on pillows made in bangladesh, smoke doobies til my brain is scrambled eggs
...but I'm not gonna tell anyone...what I'm really thinking about. .....
me too first time i heard them was saturday
@RobRedbeard23 Is Fight Club the only movie you've ever seen that portrays an internal struggle? I can think of better and closer examples of inner turmoil in book ans film.....
I really appreciate the drumming of Warren Oakes here. It was just so awesome to build tension
i was at that show in the peg and fukin rights they kicked some serious ass
no you mean in MY opinion it is. dont state what YOU believe as fact
Sad when people cant handle it when bands mature and get more fans...
This song makes me want to break everything.
this is by far my favorite video they have made so far
o yeaH, I got confused because im used to people calling them records.
sleep on pillows made in singapore? what's that s'posed to mean?
This is a pretty cool video, too bad they sold out like bitches.
If you don't know... this song might not be for your lifestyle.
i agree somehow... on the first sentences
didnt read the rest
@AnthonyOmPLHDreads dude life. wat people do wats the basic steps of life. its meant to be shallow on the surface but this song has meaning.
whats that? story of your life?
maybe you should try again
