SONY FX6: A Step-by-step Tutorial

- I recently got access to a SONY FX6 cinema camera, and it will be heavily used in the production of some science documentary films soon. I couldn't find a simple tutorial video on UA-cam to cover the basic usage of this camera, so I made one myself. If you have a SONY FX6 in your hand, just follow my steps, and you can grasp the basics in 10 minutes.

I watched your video several times. Really excellent and straight forward. Thank you for not having annoying background music. I'm having trouble setting color. I have Cinema EI selected but no matter which base LUT I set all the footage looks the same. In other words REC709 looks the same as sLog3. What am I doing wrong?

Great review, helps a lot! Is there any way to scrub through the recorded footage? Otherwise when I want to see a specific part of the clip, I have to wait an eternity when shooting at 120FPS? 😅

Great tutorial exactly what I was looking for . At 7m 9s topic (color Profile), inside Scene File (S log3) is not an option.My options are: 01. S-cinetone | 02. Standard | 03. Still | 04. ITU709... The rest have no file format. How do I get S log3? I just picked this up last night! Thanks

How do you set up the monitors? Like place them on the camera?
Actually you can control a Sony lens aperture through the camera, you just need to rotate the lens aperture ring to “A”.

Hi thanks. I tried, but I can never turn the lens to 'A' for some reason. It stuck before reaching 'A'.
@@yuanjianliu You need to disable "IRIS LOCK" on the lens, before it can be put to "A".
I'm really amazed for how many people this video was so useful, even though it covered only the very basics. I would have thought that, if you use such a camera, chances are you're a professional already. But as it seems, a lot of beginners have access to this highly sophisticated and quite expensive camera.

I think you can control the Iris on the lens if you put it on the A which means Automatic. I think I saw that in another video where someone showed that, but I am not sure if it works. It is worth a try anyway. Thank you for the video. It's a good content. You got yourself a new subscriber.
When the iris ring of the lens is used, all iris setting in the FX6 are ignored. As soon as you set the iris ring to its A position, the camera takes over. Then you can either set the iris on the camera, either using the quick settings, or by pressing the iris button, or by using one of the custom dials that you have set to control iris. Or, by holding the iris button, you can change iris mode to auto. Note: Putting the iris ring to "A" will not enable automatic iris, but just transfer iris control over to the camera. If you want it be be in auto mode, you have to set the camera accordingly.
Man, I got this to match the FX3 I had but they do not match at all when using s-cinetone. A blue background looks totally green on the FX6 and blue on FX3, getting them to match is a headache. Lesson learned, only shot log despite all the "they have the same sensor it will match easy" stuff I heard. Great video by the way.
Agree! Always need some shot matching grading for different cameras. FX3 and FX6 has different file format, so there must be something different in there
If you really want an in-depth walkthrough of the FX6, legendary video producer, Doug Jensen (who also has a UA-cam Channel) has an entire masterclass (around 20 hours) of content you can watch on your own time. It was the best 80 bucks I spent, which really taught everything I needed to know about using this camera.

Well I bought the Tutorial of Doug Jensen where you can go step by step understand clear English really this man Dough is very clear easy to understand there are some people like him are hundred from the Lord where they are born for these things and they help . I just wondered why did you started and did one short video and stoped wish you answer my question ? If you have some expertise you could have been a good asset for us people like me who buys for the first time a Sony FX6 where I had the 5 for a very short time went and sold it gave up since I could not learn much ! But now I am forcing myself and my brains to learn on how to do the basic things and be able to operate this machine take a few good videos . Thank you

Hi friend, this camera is a little bit expensive. If you want to use some SONY camera, I recommend SONY A7S3 or even SONY A7 III. The FX6 is more for feature films, advanced commercials, documentaries, and so on. It cost $6,000 for the camera body alone. You also need to buy some camera lenses to use it.

My Friend I did not see step by step you started and that's it????????how can I learn in 10 minutes video anything.ng to sell the camera lose money if I cant learn its not very easy to a 75 years old but I might do my best and learn if I feel in a few days that I am going to give up I will sell it and buy a SONY FX30 something cheaper and then I really wont care as there are days that I cant sit and bother with the camera while I am sick .I had a pneumonia and in my 7th week to recover so I get tiered and give up.
