It would be wonderful to have more specialized teachers like this in the world! My mother did this for 2 years before she couldn't take the heartbreak anymore. She said each year a few of her special students didn't make it in life and she wasn't strong enough to continue. She moved on to be a special education teacher for kindergarten through 3rd grade for 16 years. And now is a 1st grade teacher for over 20 years who specializes in reading skills.

I was unemployed for years facing homelessness for this very reason. No where would take my son, they didn’t want to be held liable for something happening or them handling something wrong. We were forced into severe poverty overnight.
I appreciate your empathy, but no need to feel sorry, just for people to be aware! I never even imagined or considered this was an issue happening to people before I myself had a medically complex child, and then I learned that it is a common occurrence that just is not addressed in most places. We fortunately were able to get help, and then move to a state that had more options available for us, but most in my situation would not have the help or finances to do so unfortunately @@oddballkimin
From a mom with a kid that needed a PPEC and my daughter went to this PPEC. To moving to state without one made my life 100% harder. I wish all the states had a PPEC.
This is great and needed nationwide. My stepdaughter has a daughter who has a heart transplant, and she can't work because regular daycares aren't equipped to care for her.
This is amazing. As a parent of a special needs child you struggle every day. A lot of the time 1 parent is unable to work because they have to take care of their child round the clock. For a family that undoubtedly has massive medical needs and bills that could cause massive troubles, debt, hardships, more stress then they already have. This provides them with the ability to make sure their child is safe and taken care of while allowing them the freedom to work, go to school, provide for their family, take some time for themselves. Having access to this could save lives, marriages, careers, allow people to improve their lives, buy a home. So mnay reasons these should be everywhere 👏👏👏
@PEMDASbaby First of all, that's an evil thing to say about a baby. Second, Not everyone has access to healthcare, not everyone can afford medical care, not every disability comes about in the womb. Some develop after, sometimes years down the line. Should we just ☠️ disabled people then? Sounds like you would probably say yes. Third, people can have multiple ultrasounds and have nothing wrong detected. Tests that could determine certain health concerns may not be available until the fetus is a certain age in the womb thereby making it impossible to terminate. Across the country women are being FORCED to carry unviable fetuses because of these barbaric and ignorant laws that have been enacted. Even if a test comes back showing certain issues, again, there are a large number of states that will not allow a woman to terminate. I am a nurse as well and only recently became familiar with this type of program when I started working as a home health nurse for medically complex children. One of my “kids” just started attending. Regular daycare wouldn’t have her unless a nurse or parent accompanied her. Unfortunately, she didn’t have a nurse everyday and was missing out on so much.

Actually every public school IS REQUIRED to provide education for special needs children. Where have you been?? This is daycare for little ones with medical needs. Most communities do have early intervention programs

I notice many kids available for adoption have special needs like this and without this special childcare a parent might have no choice but i adopt out their child because they have to go back to work to pay for food for their other children......These facilities basically keep families together because a parent can still work to provide for the rest of the family.
They have these in California, Chicago and New York . Read the headline it's nationwide. The problem is many states will not subsidize these including Florida.

Also kind of related, govts and charities put too many rules for adoption, expecting a family/couple to be perfect eg fairly well to do. But many poor families raise their kids well. Every individual family is different in each demographic. Even heard of atheist charity knocking back a christian couple for adoption, but religious charities do that to atheists as well. Therefore many children become less adoptable because they become older. Govt and even the best charities are no substitute for good quality parents. Just sayin.
In an economy that makes it MOSTLY IMPOSSIBLE to support a house and a child (let alone a special-needs one) on part-time income, unfortunately this is very needed.
As a childcare worker I am not trained on how to care for many special needs children. Sometimes we have children with special needs thrown into our classrooms and our ratio doesn’t change. So we also have another 9-12 children and we are alone. The quality of care all the children get at that point is not what it should be and it’s not the teachers fault! I love that there are centers out there for children to get the care they deserve!
This. I have two kids in my room that have been kicked out of other daycares due to special needs. Part of the problem with that is that they haven't had the kids diagnosed. Even if you have services come in. Not sure If you're a lead or not but I deal with our therapist team directly. And sometimes when they're in a normal daycare it's they can't get diagnosed without further testing because you can't take back a diagnosis like that easily. Another is some of the parents are in denial even if they receive speech therapy. Developmental therapy. And occupational therapy. It sucks and we don't get paid enough man. 😪

Many of the children aren’t diagnosed until they are in school, but I have also had children with more higher need physical disabilities and I wasn’t given any help. I’d having to carry a 40 pound child to the playground while trying to also keep track of the rest of the class and count the children and make sure they pick up their hats and gloves and shoes and whatever else they drop on the way to the playground because you know someone will get mad if they come to pick up their child and a glove is missing…. Sometimes it feels impossible. NONE of that is the child’s fault. But you can’t expect us to know how to best provide what every childs needs when we don’t have the training or SUPPORT to do it.
These are great ideas 💡. We need these everywhere. When my child was young and they had seizures. I had a horrible time finding someone to take care of them until I met a newly retired pediatric nurse.
I was the educator for the “developmental day” program for children 0-3 at an EC agency. I worked with a nurse and a paraprofessional. 5 kids each day, from 9 to 1, most coming 2x a week. Our speech, OT, and PT came in to see the kids. The program was closed because it wasn’t a “natural environment” for the children under special education law. To be eligible, they had to be 6 Mon delayed in 3 or more areas (speech, fine motor, gross motor, etc).
This is perfect!!!! My daughter has type 1 diabetes. And the daycares have a hard time adjusting to her medicine. Thank god my mother in law works in the daycare now. Just can’t imagine how life would be without her help
The problem is Medicaid doesn’t pay companies in a way where they can break even. Some companies choose not to take Medicaid due to this. Our system is broken deeply.
The vast majority of providers where I live don’t accept it… I mean, it works for like an ER visit, but even finding a PCP or getting ANY specialist services is near impossible. Many providers have said they accept it if a patient is under 18 but not if they are over 18 if they do accept it and poverty is rampant. Having insurance is basically like not having insurance unless you need to go to the ER for something because nobody takes it and heaven forbid the ER can’t do it and you require a specialist… I can also guarantee this program in the video isn’t anywhere near where I live
@@rayerhodes5300 Might I suggest going to your county Health center. They take insurance, they love it. I used to sit on a governance board for the health center in my town and we had so many problems getting people with insurance because of the stereotype, but they can get you in to any doctor you need to see. They can be your pcp. They can schedule your appointments. Try that.
You are 100% correct. It’s very interesting that this program is being highlighted in two states which chose not to expand Medicaid. I wonder how many people are going without necessary coverage so this program can exist? It’s a good program, but at what cost?
Never forget the bold stand 10 states made in 2007 against the Affordable Care Act to expand Medicaid. Would have been nice to have more programs like this.
This is awesome! I’d totally work in a place like this. But looking at the rates they don’t pay very well. If you are a registered nurse you shouldn’t take a significant pay cut to work here. $32ish an hour is way less than most nurses make.
$32/hour sounds wild for someone who’s not a nurse! But nurse school takes a LOT of hard work. I’m not smart enough for it, so I salute all the nurses who are! 😊
I think there are people who do the work for more reasons than money. If someone wants to help special needs children and they don't mind making less, they should. There's more to life than money, providing these children with care, compassion and safety while helping their parents is a noble gift.
That is the rate per child but I am sure each nurse cares for more than one child & there is probably mostly LPNs since pediatric home health nurses are usually LPNs
@@Tiffany-Rose I work for a nonprofit watershed council, and despite that being an incredible important thing that has direct impacts on thousands of people's daily lives, it also means I have chosen a path in a field that definitely isn't based on money. I also have a few neurological conditions that have made traditional work culture and schedules difficult for me and this is the first opportunity I've had that feels personally sustainable. However, I am in a very privileged position in that I have a partner who already owns their house and I'm not having to pay for my rent. Without that, I would not be able to have the "luxury" of working the way I do. Mindsets like "there's more to life than money" encourage employers to keep offering "passion-based" incentives or discourage governments from extending more funding to crucial programs, which in turns keep people in situations where they are unable to advocate for themselves, because they're always having to play catch up with their finances and think that that's okay because they're working for a good cause. Trust me, that's an excellent recipe for burnout. I hate money, and I wish it wasn't everything. But in our country, if you want to be above the poverty line, it IS everything and most people don't have the luxury to choose otherwise.
and God bless the parents still in these childrens' lives.......Many children with complex needs are often in the adoption program because parents can't deal with all their needs....Just being a parent and not giving up on your child is so important.

I've worked in "medically fragile" classrooms in New Mexico and California and most of them were great. We didn't have nurses in the classroom, though. Sometimes wed take a kiddo the the nurse's office for a procedure, and sometimes nurses and licensed therapists would come to the c!assroom.
I always wondered what I would do if my little one had these kinds of needs. . .not working isn't really an option for me. I want to look into making this more common in my state, EVERYONE needs care.
These programs are amazing. To get all ypur childs needed therapy in one place is so helpful for families. Lets rememebr that special needs is a broad term. Preemies that go home with medical devices and eventually thrive and live healthy lives temporarily need these services too.
It's a catch 22 because in order for a child to qualify for Medicaid the household income must me way below the national poverty line and with TWO parents working even minimum wage jobs full time in my state of MA that would disqualify the child from Medicaid. I myself was a single mom of two with my oldest being disabled. I relied on neighbors for care before she was in school and then summers and after school once she started. It was alot to ask of my neighbors but I was blessed and grateful as no traditional day care, camp or after school program would have her. Her disability is only physical with her being in a wheelchair and nothing more.
There are waiver programs that waive the parents' income. Usually there is a wait list, but children with very significant needs can sometimes move up the list faster. It's an imperfect system, but it is possible for a disabled child to get medicaid even if their parents make decent money.
I dunno chip has way higher income limits even in states like NH(which offers less government aid than MA). For example, the income limit for a family of 6 is about $165k,$120k for a family of 4. Both parents can work without affecting qualifications.
Truly love this Medicaid has brought joy to all those families. I am sure the families feel a sense of relief knowing their children are in great hands when they are away from them. AMAZING 👏
What a great idea! I work at a daycare center. It is really hard to care for kids with vital medical needs. We have had quite a few kids with feeding tubes. That in itself is hard. We didnt go to school to treat medical needs. Its scary because a mistake can seriously hurt a kid. In a regular daycare. I see kids who needs more support and we simply dont have the means to provide it.
So happy to hear something like this exists but I wish it were more popular. Im not a parent but on behalf of the parents with special needs kids, THANK YOU.
I live in Florida, and I didn’t even know that. As a substitute teacher with no medical experience, I have worked with children that should have been taken care of by a nurse, but weren’t. So this isn’t a state-wide thing. But at least it’s happening in some parts of the state.
Many more programs like this are needed for kids with special medical and developmental needs, and the programs need to provide care far beyond the age of 12. I previously helped run programs for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. In our huge, very populated county, we were at one point the only program that would serve kids over the age of 12. Parents of kids with disabilities and special health needs are at higher risk of being single parents, losing their jobs, and facing financial hardships due to the care they have to provide. We need many more programs like this, and programs that can keep providing that care behind the age when most typical children no longer require day care.
I want my taxes funding programs like this, not endless war.

I notice many kids available for adoption have special needs like this and without this special childcare a parent might have no choice but i adopt out their child because they have to go back to work to pay for food for their other children......These facilities basically keep families together because a parent can still work to provide for the rest of the family.
They have these in California, Chicago and New York . Read the headline it's nationwide. The problem is many states will not subsidize these including Florida.

Also kind of related, govts and charities put too many rules for adoption, expecting a family/couple to be perfect eg fairly well to do. But many poor families raise their kids well. Every individual family is different in each demographic.
Even heard of atheist charity knocking back a christian couple for adoption, but religious charities do that to atheists as well. Therefore many children become less adoptable because they become older. Govt and even the best charities are no substitute for good quality parents. Just sayin.

In an economy that makes it MOSTLY IMPOSSIBLE to support a house and a child (let alone a special-needs one) on part-time income, unfortunately this is very needed.
As a childcare worker I am not trained on how to care for many special needs children. Sometimes we have children with special needs thrown into our classrooms and our ratio doesn’t change. So we also have another 9-12 children and we are alone. The quality of care all the children get at that point is not what it should be and it’s not the teachers fault! I love that there are centers out there for children to get the care they deserve!
This. I have two kids in my room that have been kicked out of other daycares due to special needs. Part of the problem with that is that they haven't had the kids diagnosed. Even if you have services come in. Not sure If you're a lead or not but I deal with our therapist team directly. And sometimes when they're in a normal daycare it's they can't get diagnosed without further testing because you can't take back a diagnosis like that easily. Another is some of the parents are in denial even if they receive speech therapy. Developmental therapy. And occupational therapy. It sucks and we don't get paid enough man. 😪

Many of the children aren’t diagnosed until they are in school, but I have also had children with more higher need physical disabilities and I wasn’t given any help. I’d having to carry a 40 pound child to the playground while trying to also keep track of the rest of the class and count the children and make sure they pick up their hats and gloves and shoes and whatever else they drop on the way to the playground because you know someone will get mad if they come to pick up their child and a glove is missing…. Sometimes it feels impossible. NONE of that is the child’s fault. But you can’t expect us to know how to best provide what every childs needs when we don’t have the training or SUPPORT to do it.
These are great ideas 💡. We need these everywhere. When my child was young and they had seizures. I had a horrible time finding someone to take care of them until I met a newly retired pediatric nurse.
This will be so helpful for families with special need child. We need more of these.

Hello I’m a chronically ill kid and I find this so amazing this should be something every where this could help so many kids and parents
I was the educator for the “developmental day” program for children 0-3 at an EC agency. I worked with a nurse and a paraprofessional. 5 kids each day, from 9 to 1, most coming 2x a week. Our speech, OT, and PT came in to see the kids. The program was closed because it wasn’t a “natural environment” for the children under special education law. To be eligible, they had to be 6 Mon delayed in 3 or more areas (speech, fine motor, gross motor, etc).
This is perfect!!!! My daughter has type 1 diabetes. And the daycares have a hard time adjusting to her medicine. Thank god my mother in law works in the daycare now. Just can’t imagine how life would be without her help

This is universal healthcare. Medicaaid is the ideal health insurance. Its equivalent to the federal government plan -- with exceptions of course.
The problem is Medicaid doesn’t pay companies in a way where they can break even. Some companies choose not to take Medicaid due to this.
Our system is broken deeply.
The vast majority of providers where I live don’t accept it… I mean, it works for like an ER visit, but even finding a PCP or getting ANY specialist services is near impossible. Many providers have said they accept it if a patient is under 18 but not if they are over 18 if they do accept it and poverty is rampant. Having insurance is basically like not having insurance unless you need to go to the ER for something because nobody takes it and heaven forbid the ER can’t do it and you require a specialist… I can also guarantee this program in the video isn’t anywhere near where I live
@@rayerhodes5300 Might I suggest going to your county Health center. They take insurance, they love it. I used to sit on a governance board for the health center in my town and we had so many problems getting people with insurance because of the stereotype, but they can get you in to any doctor you need to see. They can be your pcp. They can schedule your appointments. Try that.

You are 100% correct. It’s very interesting that this program is being highlighted in two states which chose not to expand Medicaid. I wonder how many people are going without necessary coverage so this program can exist? It’s a good program, but at what cost?

Never forget the bold stand 10 states made in 2007 against the Affordable Care Act to expand Medicaid. Would have been nice to have more programs like this.

This is awesome! I’d totally work in a place like this. But looking at the rates they don’t pay very well. If you are a registered nurse you shouldn’t take a significant pay cut to work here. $32ish an hour is way less than most nurses make.
$32/hour sounds wild for someone who’s not a nurse! But nurse school takes a LOT of hard work. I’m not smart enough for it, so I salute all the nurses who are! 😊
I think there are people who do the work for more reasons than money. If someone wants to help special needs children and they don't mind making less, they should. There's more to life than money, providing these children with care, compassion and safety while helping their parents is a noble gift.

That is the rate per child but I am sure each nurse cares for more than one child & there is probably mostly LPNs since pediatric home health nurses are usually LPNs
@@Tiffany-Rose I work for a nonprofit watershed council, and despite that being an incredible important thing that has direct impacts on thousands of people's daily lives, it also means I have chosen a path in a field that definitely isn't based on money. I also have a few neurological conditions that have made traditional work culture and schedules difficult for me and this is the first opportunity I've had that feels personally sustainable. However, I am in a very privileged position in that I have a partner who already owns their house and I'm not having to pay for my rent. Without that, I would not be able to have the "luxury" of working the way I do. Mindsets like "there's more to life than money" encourage employers to keep offering "passion-based" incentives or discourage governments from extending more funding to crucial programs, which in turns keep people in situations where they are unable to advocate for themselves, because they're always having to play catch up with their finances and think that that's okay because they're working for a good cause. Trust me, that's an excellent recipe for burnout.
I hate money, and I wish it wasn't everything. But in our country, if you want to be above the poverty line, it IS everything and most people don't have the luxury to choose otherwise.
and God bless the parents still in these childrens' lives.......Many children with complex needs are often in the adoption program because parents can't deal with all their needs....Just being a parent and not giving up on your child is so important.

I've worked in "medically fragile" classrooms in New Mexico and California and most of them were great. We didn't have nurses in the classroom, though. Sometimes wed take a kiddo the the nurse's office for a procedure, and sometimes nurses and licensed therapists would come to the c!assroom.

These programs are amazing. To get all ypur childs needed therapy in one place is so helpful for families. Lets rememebr that special needs is a broad term. Preemies that go home with medical devices and eventually thrive and live healthy lives temporarily need these services too.

It's a catch 22 because in order for a child to qualify for Medicaid the household income must me way below the national poverty line and with TWO parents working even minimum wage jobs full time in my state of MA that would disqualify the child from Medicaid.
I myself was a single mom of two with my oldest being disabled. I relied on neighbors for care before she was in school and then summers and after school once she started. It was alot to ask of my neighbors but I was blessed and grateful as no traditional day care, camp or after school program would have her. Her disability is only physical with her being in a wheelchair and nothing more.
There are waiver programs that waive the parents' income. Usually there is a wait list, but children with very significant needs can sometimes move up the list faster. It's an imperfect system, but it is possible for a disabled child to get medicaid even if their parents make decent money.
Texas is ridiculous you have to make like less than $200 a month.. I think you'd make more begging on the streets. Waiver list is YEARS
My daughter was on the waiver list for 5 years before finally being accepted.
I dunno chip has way higher income limits even in states like NH(which offers less government aid than MA). For example, the income limit for a family of 6 is about $165k,$120k for a family of 4. Both parents can work without affecting qualifications.
Truly love this Medicaid has brought joy to all those families. I am sure the families feel a sense of relief knowing their children are in great hands when they are away from them. AMAZING 👏

What a great idea! I work at a daycare center. It is really hard to care for kids with vital medical needs. We have had quite a few kids with feeding tubes. That in itself is hard. We didnt go to school to treat medical needs. Its scary because a mistake can seriously hurt a kid. In a regular daycare. I see kids who needs more support and we simply dont have the means to provide it.

I live in Florida, and I didn’t even know that. As a substitute teacher with no medical experience, I have worked with children that should have been taken care of by a nurse, but weren’t. So this isn’t a state-wide thing. But at least it’s happening in some parts of the state.
They said there's about a hundred in the state. It's a big state, that's not that many. Probably all in large population areas.

Many more programs like this are needed for kids with special medical and developmental needs, and the programs need to provide care far beyond the age of 12. I previously helped run programs for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. In our huge, very populated county, we were at one point the only program that would serve kids over the age of 12. Parents of kids with disabilities and special health needs are at higher risk of being single parents, losing their jobs, and facing financial hardships due to the care they have to provide. We need many more programs like this, and programs that can keep providing that care behind the age when most typical children no longer require day care.
