  • Marianna turned to drugs as a means of escape and to gain confidence.
She shares her experience through addiction and recovery.
“Being given sips of wine was common in our culture growing up, but it led to cravings at an early age. I liked the taste, and I found myself drawn to it-this phenomenon of craving set in pretty young for me.
It progressed to going into my father’s liquor cabinet. That’s where I crossed the line. I went from being given to stealing it.
I had an uncle who was a medic. I, therefore, had free access to prescription drugs. I lived a life of depression and victimhood. The theme of my life is that I didn't care. I was on a mission to kill myself.
My story of recovery started in 1989 through the EAP program. I was introduced to a local recovery program.
My first meeting was the first time I said, "I'm Marianna, and I'm an alcoholic.” What kept me coming back was the hope I felt in that hall.
Six years ago, something tragic happened during a surgery and life as I knew it changed. I was told that I would never walk again, but they were wrong. I was able to apply all the tools that I had in the program while in rehab.
I pray every day and have a faith in a higher power; I started working again. I started enjoying life.
God taught me a valuable lesson that my life is worth it. Your life is worth it too, and you can do it.
I've been sick for the past six years. There are still limitations that I have, but I've been able to learn how to deal with them.
If it wasn't for hope, I would have given up. Recovery is possible if we continue to amplify hope.”
