Verse 8 all of those things, unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, and tender heart all start with the word "have" rather than "do". This is impossible in the face of what is coming in verse 9 except the Lord causes us to have all of verse 8. We can fake kindness, but we can't fake what is going on inside of us.
Pastor John these studies have helped me immensely. I’m forever grateful for your ministry and labor to help feed God’s sheep. An observation/question about this passage - Is it possible that “that you may obtain a blessing” is referring less to THE inheritance of salvation and more referring to the ‘here and now’ blessing of the verses that follow? That is, psalm 34 “whoever would love life and see good days”? This seems to be further verified by v.13 and 14 “NOW who is there to harm you…then v. 14 “BUT even IF you should suffer for…”? The full context makes it easier to explain “that you may inherit a blessing” isn’t conditional to salvation in the case that it isn’t even referring to salvation rather being explained by v.10-12? Why else would he go on to say “but even if you should suffer” as if v.10-12 are the normal expectations for seeking what is good and “suffering for righteousness” is the exception to the norm?
It means suffering for righteousness sake is also a blessing we inherit for obeying verses 8-9.. And the Life and good days a believer should desire is the life without sin and sorrow, it should be eternal life so I guess it all has to do with salvation at the end of the day
