You could thrift a wooden tv cabinet that could be painted wall color or stain it to match mantel wood. Have your talented husband turn it into a sewing center. Use existing or create side shelves for folded materials. On other side where tv once was housed, make a 3- boards hinged fold out table with a fold down "leg" or thin cabinet that becomes the support to table for sewing. When it is folded back into cabinet, set your portable sewing machine there for storage. If the cabinet was same hieght of mantel, it would not be overpowering or feel like a cramped corner.
You will love your homemade bread even more if you go ahead and get an electric knif...even a very cheap on works wonders! You can cut the bread super thin, straight, and quickly. Its soooooo much easier than sawing though with a bread knife. 🎉
*Didn’t you have a chair where Finns bed is once?* I think you should put the chair back there again.. it will both help open up the living room while keeping it close enough to be considered conversational, and will fill the space without feeling cluttered. Adding a very small round table on the side of the chair will ground the chair in the space and provide a place to set a mug and cozy book ☕️📚❤
I have found adding powdered milk makes bread dough have a smoother texture. I've used it in my bread machine and making bread in my stand mixer and the results are wonderful. I use 3 rounded tablespoons per loaf Store bought bread has dough conditioners in it and, of course, preservatives, that make it have a soft crust. Some ideas for your blank wall....since you have an outlet there you could put a hanging light, adjusting the height to whatever you want. Another idea is art that you can change out according to the seasons. You could also find or have made a very large frame and hang framed pictures (family pics?) inside of it. I like that dress on you, very pretty. Have a lovely day 😀❄☃💗
You could always move your entry table to where you have Finn's bed and free up that space for his bed or nothing at all. It might balance the room. Thanks for the video! I love your content.💐
As I am a very visual person... the white chair needs to be where the dog bed is with the brass floor lamp next to it.... maybe a floor magazine basket next to the chair. It makes the room look so cramped and small with it on the carpet. Just a suggestion, since you mentioned it. Also a nice large wall basket or metal pocket, where you could change the foliage seasonally.
Thank you for the input. We did have the single chair there for a while but always pulled it up closer to the couch for entertaining and movie watching. It also helps make the living room rug look less empty when it’s actually on the rug. Always fun to rearrange and play with furniture 💛
Hi Hilary, It's Mary. I usually comment from my Husbands account. I now have my own 😅 You know when my kids were little I got a sitter a couple of times a week. I got so much slack for that because I was "home" It was honestly one of the best decisions I ever made for myself AND for my family. I was able to show up more present AND calm. I know it's something that is not available for everyone. However, a blessing if you can ❤
As a first time mom to 1 little boy we just recently hired a babysitter for Mondays and it has seriously transformed my weeks. Especially as we don't have family that lives close there was never a break. And you're right, having the time definitely helps set me up for the week and allows me to show up better for him the rest of the week. ❤
I was a SAHM as well...and had sitters 3x per week so that we could attend Church Care Group/bible study, grocery shopping, and then out to friends for coffee and cards...I had 8 babysitters on a rotating cycle.
This video really shows the benefits of the work that you do ahead like freezing meals, using a planner, book storage etc. Keeping things tidy also shows how your right sizing keeps the clutter down too. My goal is to also right size and be neater this year. Thanks for the inspiration!
I would pull the armchair, ottoman and floor lamp over to where the dog bed is and add some art or mirror to the wall - would use your existing furniture/decor and open up the room. Maybe doggie relocates to in front of fireplace ❤🐾
Second option...a small square wood table and a mini wood cabinet with closed door could work as a " sewing center" cabinet in the corner by fireplace...while still keep dog bed beneath when not sewing.
I agree that the wall in the front room seems a bit blank-I could see you displaying a beautiful piece of fabric or blanket or something on a rail or maybe a basket wall? Some texture for that area. Finn must love his new bed! 😊
Hillary,I love your living room & the decor, but maybe move the armchair back against that wall with the floor lamp- it always looked good there in that spot- it looks to crowded pulled onto the rug, because your ottoman is larger.I think it will open up the space.😊
The bread and scoring were beautiful. An idea for the empty living room space is a long and tallish narrow side table. A tall candlestick-style lamp on top, and one large piece of artwork above. On the table you could put picture frames or a long wooden baker’s bowl. Of course it would need to be a no-zone for things not belonging on it. My girls knew what areas those were. And Finn’s bed would fit nicely underneath.
Just a small suggestion, I think a mirror would look great on that wall. It would reflect light and make your space a bit brighter 😊 just a thought but you do what is best for you. Love your style.
I've been watching watercolor videos for the past 4 years and love learning about watercolor, but I realized how I've missed your sweet spirit. You are an amazing woman and such a loving and organized wife and mom. My sons are in their 30's now , but I still love your insight and interesting topics.
I think a taller antique gold mirror will look great on that wall. Then you wouldn't have to move anything when its time to set up the Christmas tree and it'll reflect light from the window across from it.
I truly enjoy your content. The living room is lovely. How about a charming vintage type mirror to open up the space? It would give you room for the dog bed also!
Of course everyone knows what you should do with the space where Finn's bed is except you! I have found when I don't know what to do with a space I just leave it alone and one day out of the blue, it just hits me and I wonder why I didn't think of that before. I do agree with you that the chair belongs on the rug. One commenter mentioned putting a mirror on that wall and I think that is a wonderful idea. It will reflect your room and look very nice. Mirrors are my go to when I don't know what to do and it's amazing how they can make a space look warm and cozy in how they reflect the room. And just leave Finn's bed where it is. We do live in our houses and everything can't be perfect nor should it be.
I was thinking it might be nice to rearrange a tiny bit-perhaps moving the white chair to the empty wall and positioning Finn's bed vertically. It could create a cozy reading area and make the space feel more open. Looking forward to Thursday, my darling!
I think a medium or taller plant/tree would be beautiful on the blank wall you’re not sure what to do with! I think it would give it some presence and liveliness without adding furniture or clutter. And you could still keep the dog bed there under it. Just a thought! Could be a fake or real house plant/tree!
You are such a positive person , and a great inspiration to us all here on you- tube. ❤❤❤ personally, I would leave that Grey Wall In the Living room empty.
I love your videos Hilary. I have been subbed since Evie was a baby. I love that you are the 3 most important things a woman can be. 1. A christian. 2. Loving wife. 3. Devoted Mother. This sad world needs more of you. Tyfs HUGS ❤🙏
Where Finn's bed is, I wouldn't put anything on the floor bc his pad is there, but I'd put some prints on the wall. You used to have those horse prints there, or make a gallery wall, etc. That would fix the blank wall issue, and also not add clutter to the floor. I love the idea of doing a monthly family excursion! I'm one who fails to plan ahead, and consequently I end up not doing anything. Enjoy your outings!
It sank because it was over-proofed, it doesn’t change the flavor but it does cause the bread to sink in the middle. Good luck with your new skills! :)
I’m sure you have talked about it before but how do you prepare avocado? I notice you eat it all the time. Do you just peel and eat? 🤮. Lol. I.m not crazy about them but I need to eat them for the health of my pancreas.
Julie, I just recently started eating avocados...the trick is to make sure they are ripe, a bit soft to the touch - not rock hard. I slice mine, remove the pit and in sections, I peel off the skin. In my opinion, it's best with a very small sprinkle of salt, pepper and either oregano or Italian Seasoning. You can eat it sections with eggs, mash and put on toast (Avocado Toast) or add to salads, mexican food, etc. It is a superfood to me anyway and once you season it, it's really quite good just sliced up! My big issue is getting them ripe, but not too overipe (mushy). Enjoy! Paige Rose
There is something so satisfying about making your own bread. I too have started experimenting with sandwich bread. I got a Pullman pan for Christmas. It has a lid so the bread comes out flat on all four sides and also with very minimal crust which for little kiddos who don’t eat their crusts is a plus. My kids are grown though so not a consideration here 😉. My first loaf came out so well and was gone in a flash 😂. Your French press is lovely. I have been using one for several years. I love the ritual of it. It makes preparing breakfast a little more special. Thanks for sharing Hilary. Have a lovely day 😊.
Hi Hilary, loved this! I have been wanting to get a bread maker again. I had one years ago that broke and never replaced it. I love how you can just put the ingredients in it and walk away. I love your dress too! Much love, Jennifer
The ease is so convenient for sure, I made a *perfect* loaf two days ago that I set up the night before with the plain ingredients and woke up to a fabulous loaf!
Hilary your home is stunning. I loveeee that chinoiserie French press 💙 I had a space just like yours that I couldn’t figure out what to do with… I didn’t want to put another piece of furniture because my living room is just too cluttered. So what I did was I just made a tiny little gallery wall just four or five frames that I actually all ordered on Amazon because I was too impatient to thrift and find them lol I think a gallery wall with all beautiful vintage picture frames would look gorgeous on that little wall in your living room!
Loving the new habits! So funny, "sandwich bread" making is specifically one of my goals this year too... and mainly for my kids (also my husband) lol! Your bread looked yummy to me! AND just wanted to say, keep the nanny time going! We do the same here a few hours a week and it's amazing! You can have focused time and split work and family time a bit better imo. Anywho, enjoyed your video!
When our children were little we scheduled a monthly activity/outing. We let each person pick including the parents & set a dollar limit. It could be something that cost nothing or something more expensive. It’s a great way to spend time with your family and make memories plus teach the children about money. We really enjoyed doing it.
That bare wall that you don’t know what to do with would benefit from #6 on your January Focus List. It needs a plant or something green…maybe a hanging plant or a wall sconce that doubles as a smaller planter for something like a pothos plant 🪴 😊
Hi and Happy New Year. A wild idea: Have you tried a long, wide tapestry on your blank wall that would complement your existing curtains? I really liked when you had the chair there but it seems like you didn’t. 😂 A nice vintage wooden piece would work and coordinate with your chest and your DR cabinet. In videos, nothing looks too cluttered or too much furniture. Just some thoughts.
When I started making bread, I was advised to get sandwich loaf size pans to bake in in. I did all the things with my bread maker then baked in the oven. Game changer. Loaves were the size of store bought and lasted much longer.
I could see how having a beautiful mirror would look fantastic on the wall next to your fireplace and will also make the room feel larger and more open. 😊
Hey Hilary....The Daily Connaissieur (sp?) has a video up concerning plain walls and how their look can be changed with the addition of picture frame moulding. It might give you some useful ideas for your living room.
Years ago I bought these long bread pans off Amazon, they make your loaves the same size as store bought bread. I got a honey whole wheat recipe from a book. I have a Bosch which is just a heavy duty mixer. The recipe makes 6 regular size loaves (so I can make 2 of the long ones and 2 regular ones). But the key to having it soft is to make something called Dough Enhancer. It’s just Lecithin and some Vit C granules (can get at Natural Grocers I’d think). And you only add like a 1/2 tsp of each to the big recipe and also some vital wheat gluten. Probably more info than you’d like but here is that recipe. Honey Whole Wheat Bread ★★★★★ Breads Servings: 96 Ingredients: 6 1/2 cups warm water (95-115 degrees) 3 tablespoon yeast 1 1/2 tsp vitamin C powder (ascorbic acid) (I got this at GNC store) 1 1/2 tsp lecithin (I also got this at GNC store) 1 cup oil 1 cup honey (tip: I add oil first to 2 cup glass measuring cup..then add honey and it slides right out) 2 T salt 1 cup vital gluten 11-15 cups 100% whole wheat flour Directions: From Miserly Meals book. Honey Whole Wheat Bread Serves 96 (6 loaves) Preparation Time: 1-2 hours Cooking Time: 30 minutes "I find it easier to bake several loaves of bread at once and freeze them. Here is my favorite recipe." In a very large mixing bowl (I used my Bosch), combine the first 7 ingredients. Mix well. Let the mix rest for 5 minutes. Add the gluten and mix well. With the mixer running, slowly add the flour to the dough, one cup at a time. Once the dough begins to pull cleanly away from the sides of the bowl, you have added enough. Adding too much flour will make the bread crumbly. You may use more or less than the 11 cups, depending on the flour, air temperature, etc. If you have a kneading function on your mixer, turn it on for 6-15 minutes, watching for an elastic consistency. If not, knead on a floured board for 20 minutes. Form into 6 loaves and place in greased loaf pans. Cover and put in a warm area until doubled in size (20-40 minutes). Remove the upper oven racks and place pans on the lowest level. Bake at 325 for 30 minutes. Cost per serving (1 slice): 6 cents Cost per loaf: 96 cents Kitchen Tip: If you need to INTERRUPT YOUR BREAD RISING, place the dough in the refrigerator. This slows the rising down as well as allows better flavor and texture. I make my favoite bread is Amish Bread. I make the dough in my bread machine but bake it in my oven it turn out great every time great sandwiches bread always soft.
Julia Childs had a great sandwich bread recipe! Also, a serrated knife to slice will change your life lol. Victorinox makes the BEST serrated knife for super inexpensive ❤😊
I have been making the pan de mie bread from the youtube channel Hopewell Heights. She makes it in a pullman pan. It's delicious and my search for a great sandwich loaf is over. She also tweaks the recipe to make a cinnamon loaf. But the pullman pan is key.😊
I wonder if that bare wall could use one or 2 hanging brass plant holders (or something appropriate for your style) with a Boston fern or other plants? Would keep the area below free for the pup and bring in another element to the room.
Check happy hooligans bread machine dinner rolls recipe. I use same recipe for a loaf in my bread machine and it turns out great. Sometimes I just do the dough and bake in glass breadpan in the oven. I never thought to take out the paddle I've always left it in to bake
Hi Hilary, for your family outings, you might consider coming toDoylestown Pennsylvania, right down 202 - the Mercer Museum is a great place for kids, the Kids Castle playground, and lots of fun restaurants and a cute town to walk around in 👍
I own 2 of those bread machines. 😂. I always use bread flour in the machine and bread machine yeast. Most of the time I use the dough making feature. I then shape and rise the dough and make bread in oven. Almost every time I make in the bread in the bread maker, usually in summer when I don’t want house to get hotter from oven, it falls at the end. But like you found, it tastes good. Now I will feel better: it is the bread maker and not something I do that makes it fall. 😂
Maybe you could put some molding on that wall and it would mirror the shelving unit you built? Then you could hang pictures per season or your style changes? Maybe you could move the chest that is next to your couch and put that over there? No cost, just moving stuff around? Best of luck!
Happy New Year! You're so deliberate and well organized. I'm sure your home is a great haven of peace. Your hair is so shiny and beautiful. I really like this length on you. Your monthly adventures are a wonderful idea. Planning an outing and studying to prepare for the opportunities there can be great fun in advance of the trips--mini or maxi.
Hi Hilary! Another inspiring vlog.... thank you! I have your planner and am using it! One thing that I especially appreciate is the encouragement to do one thing a month that is fun or different from the usual outtings. You inspire me in many ways! Lord Bless you.
I'm in the midst of sorting my glassware too, clips that fell off, don’t love that. I organize lids separately as well, and smaller ones have their own space. By the way, your Spode French press is beautiful my kind of gift. Just a tip: let the coffee sit about 8 minutes before pushing the handle. Dan did well. My daughter got me a scorer and baton baskets for my bread-making adventures. And, kudos to Evy for showcasing her sewing skills - such a good girl! Love ya Hil 🙏🏼🙋🏻♀️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful get back in the routine video, starting the new year on the right foot. All your tips are always so useful. Nice glass containers and beautiful French press.
I love your home Also, I've always heard that the top of bread machine sinks when there is too much liquid or humidity. Hiring a babysitter was a gamechanger for me - I could be so much more productive in a short amount of time without interruptions.
Thanks for your videos ❤ always timely, calm and refreshing. I have watched over the years since starting your family and have found that returning to your channel feels like coming home. I have been on IG more than you tube this past year and it is so easy to get swept into consumer culture over there. I watched some of your recent videos while working yesterday and was inspired to declutter my kitchen/living room areas that have been piling up. Feeling so refreshed and encouraged.
I'm not over fond of the way the bread maker bakes so what I always do us use the dough setting then put it to rise in a bread pan and bake in the oven. The only thing is, is that it doesn't work to do it overnight. You could always start it during dinner and then bake.
Wonderful video! Homemade bread is like dessert for me, so delicious! I just love your home and always have. You are so encouraging by not being afraid to try something new. And, Evie is amazing! What a lovely young woman she is becoming. A suggestion for your blank wall would be a lovely hanging plant. This wouldn't interfere with Finn's bed and there's no furniture involved. Macrame hanging baskets are back in style and are just beautiful. Love that you are always doing something for others. Taking a homemade meal to someone in need is hospitality at it's best. Love you, Hilary!💗
I do 3 cups of flour, 2 tsp salt, 2 tsp honey, 2 tsp yeast and a little over a cup of water, and 2 tsp olive oil... It comes out perfect every time and then I let it go and then it does all of it for me.
I highly recommend a bread slicer. I bought one on Amazon for $40 and a game change for sandwich bread. The cut is measured perfectly. Good luck finding the prefect recipe
Hi! We have been using our bread machine for seven years. It is a different model (I am from Europe, Tefal bread machines are very popular here). In the troubleshooting section of the manual, they mention possible causes for colapsed bread: insufficient flour, too much water, too much yeast, water too warm. Of course , the cause can be one or a combiantion of these. In my experience, too much water is to blame. The effect of putting a higher quantity of water is different in case of bread made with a bread machine than in case of bread baked in the oven. Happy New Year!

I use the bread maker for the dough but still bake in the oven. I find it makes the crust softer.
I was going to comment this but you beat me to it! Love the breadmaker for proofing, but always get a better bake in the oven. :)
Huh, the oven makes the crust softer, I would’ve thought the opposite! Definitely still learning

I love the ritual of it. It makes preparing breakfast a little more special. Thanks for sharing Hilary. Have a lovely day 😊.
My question for Hillary, would be “Where to purchase such a French Press?”
I have a Pullman pan too. Works great!
Just put a mirror on the blank wall in the living room. It will enlarge he room, reflect the light and take up no room.
Put a wide, full length mirror on that wall in the living room.
I like the idea of a gallery wall or some artwork! Since the Christmas tree goes here, much easier to store artwork than moving a piece of furniture.
I love that idea, as well!
I think board and batten would look great on the empty wall. It gives it a more decorated feeling with all the benefits that you love now. 😊
Hmmmmmm 😏
😂
Loved the video! Every minute of it! Thanks for sharing!!
Your homemade bread looks delicious and so soft! Your family is lucky to have such a wonderful Mom as you!!! ❤
It’s a good goal, hope you find a recipe that works for you all 💛 So glad you’re here, I just found your channel as well!
Great video! I love this type of video from you. 😊 I am chuckling about using the heated seat to keep the food warm. Perfect!
Thank you very much for the video 👏👏👏 the bread looks delicious ☺️
When our children were little we scheduled a monthly activity/outing. We let each person pick including the parents & set a dollar limit. It could be something that cost nothing or something more expensive. It’s a great way to spend time with your family and make memories plus teach the children about money. We really enjoyed doing it.
That bare wall that you don’t know what to do with would benefit from #6 on your January Focus List. It needs a plant or something green…maybe a hanging plant or a wall sconce that doubles as a smaller planter for something like a pothos plant 🪴 😊
lol. I have a cherry kitchen. slowly getting rid of those not red. If we were neighbors. I'd buy your red ones 😍❣️🙏
A tall plant would look nice on your blank wall.
How about a mirror on that wall with an oval shaped gold frame on one side? You could try a smaller mirror or a full length mirror?
I could see how having a beautiful mirror would look fantastic on the wall next to your fireplace and will also make the room feel larger and more open. 😊
Lol, I giggled when you said the red just really bothers you…that’s how I feel about blue 😂😂😂.
Very nice and helpful, dear Hilary! I was hoping you would also talk about your daily devotional & prayer habits.
Hey Hilary....The Daily Connaissieur (sp?) has a video up concerning plain walls and how their look can be changed with the addition of picture frame moulding. It might give you some useful ideas for your living room.
What about a large mirror on the wall next to the fireplace
a frame that holds multiple pictures would look cute in that space with some favourite pictures of your children
Honey Whole Wheat Bread
★★★★★
Breads
Servings: 96
Ingredients:
6 1/2 cups warm water (95-115 degrees)
3 tablespoon yeast
1 1/2 tsp vitamin C powder (ascorbic acid) (I got this at GNC store)
1 1/2 tsp lecithin (I also got this at GNC store)
1 cup oil
1 cup honey (tip: I add oil first to 2 cup glass measuring cup..then add honey and it slides right out)
2 T salt
1 cup vital gluten
11-15 cups 100% whole wheat flour
Directions:
From Miserly Meals book.
Honey Whole Wheat Bread
Serves 96 (6 loaves)
Preparation Time: 1-2 hours
Cooking Time: 30 minutes
"I find it easier to bake several loaves of bread at once and freeze them. Here is my favorite recipe."
In a very large mixing bowl (I used my Bosch), combine the first 7 ingredients.
Cost per serving (1 slice): 6 cents
Cost per loaf: 96 cents
Kitchen Tip: If you need to INTERRUPT YOUR BREAD RISING, place the dough in the refrigerator.

🇮🇪 wonderful sharing very nice
Happy New Year! You're so deliberate and well organized. I'm sure your home is a great haven of peace. Your hair is so shiny and beautiful. I really like this length on you. Your monthly adventures are a wonderful idea. Planning an outing and studying to prepare for the opportunities there can be great fun in advance of the trips--mini or maxi.
What a beautiful video! Would you mind sharing where your husband got your french press? So beautiful!
Thank you, Amazon! Linked below 💙
I love making dough in my bread machine. I usually find it works better to bake the bread in the oven.
You are amazing women, mom and wife always giving me motivation to go for an extra mile❤
Try using a good serrated bread knife an electric knife for better slices.
I have the same bread machine and have not tried the method of overnight letting the dough rest. Thank you for sharing.
I only do it with sourdough, I do the standard method otherwise with the raw ingredients 💛
Happy to offer a little calm to your day ☺️
Love your dress, it looks fabulous on you
I'm not over fond of the way the bread maker bakes so what I always do us use the dough setting then put it to rise in a bread pan and bake in the oven. The only thing is, is that it doesn't work to do it overnight. You could always start it during dinner and then bake.
I think a tall floor plant in a wicker basket will finish that area rather then more furniture.
A low light or faux plant would look nice in that bare corner.
I do 3 cups of flour, 2 tsp salt, 2 tsp honey, 2 tsp yeast and a little over a cup of water, and 2 tsp olive oil... It comes out perfect every time and then I let it go and then it does all of it for me.
The Food Nanny has a three loaf sanwbread recipe you might like.
Yes I was thinking of making my own again. I used to do it years ago.
Ikea has bamboo lids. I dont remember if they have them for the square containers you have, but i think they do
Living room is so peaceful and content. Like a resting room. Love it
I highly recommend a bread slicer. I bought one on Amazon for $40 and a game change for sandwich bread. The cut is measured perfectly. Good luck finding the prefect recipe
I was just researching one yesterday ☺️
Could you recommend the one you have?
