How To Install macOS Sonoma on an Unsupported Mac

- In this tutorial guide, I explain step by step how you can install the latest macOS 14 Sonoma on your older, unsupported Mac, by using OpenCore Legacy Patcher.
Here, I'm using a 2012 MacBook Pro, but the procedure is the same for other models.

I agree with previous comments about this being an easy to follow step by step guide. Ideally look at this video whilst updating your other Mac. Make good use of the pause, rewind, & play buttons to ensure a fool-proof set up. A+++++++++++

Whenever I get to the part to install Sonoma on the USB it says “requires High Sierra” notification. I’ve done this before and that never happened. 🤷🏻♂️

I have a Macbook PRO 13'' Early 2015 8gb RAM and 256 SSD. Guys, don't even think about it. I tried Ventura, Sonoma and the brand new Sequoia (all fresh installs). The Mac turn into a bric: slow, glitchy, scrolling is a nightmare, etc. I don't know, maybe is my Mac, but recently I came back to Monterey and it's like having a new machine. I really don't know why people say their machine improves with opencore. Maybe some kind of interest? The views? Otherwise, I don't get it...
Can this be installed as and upgrade rather than a clean install?
Are there any concerns with future updates via this method?
Just skip the part where I formatted my SSD, choose your internal SSD as the install location, and there should be no loss of files - it'll be as if you were upgrading your OS via the normal Apple method.
When new updates are released, you should be able to update the normal way, but check the OCLP website before installing them, as Apple occasionally throws a curve ball that needs OpenCore to do some work before it can be installed.

Hello . Great video and thank you for this tutorial. I have High Sierra but when i tries to use Open Core it doesn't let me select my usb drive to install the Sonoma . Is there an earlier version of the Open core software that is combatible with high siera ??

Mine got what I feel to be 90% through the whole process. I got to the point where it was repeatedly updating itself. Got to the Apple logo completed the bar a few times. But on the last one or perhaps second the last one it got to about 3% filled and then froze. And, I started the whole process over again and got to the exact same point in it froze. Any ideas?

I gave up on trying to install Sonoma, I even tried Ventura and got the same issue. So I’m not sure if there’s an issue with their flash program or if there’s an incompatibility with this particular iMac.
So I gave up and went ahead and installed Ubuntu onto this iMac. It’s absolutely fantastic. Able to run modern browsers my wife watches her favorite Netflix shows and we search the web and everything like that. Absolutely beautifully now. So create a flash for the most recent version of Ubuntu and go ahead and get that puppy installed …is my recommendation.

Has anyone else run into the same issue? For me, it gets stuck loading the progress bar with the Apple logo (as seen in the video at 04:38) in the installer menu. It stalls at roughly 1/3 of the progress. I've tried resetting the NVRAM, loading various versions of macOS Sonoma and Ventura on my external hard drive, and disconnecting all USB and other accessories. The problem persists. Any help would be appreciated!
We need to know what the ram/processor speeds are on these systems, and how well big programs like Logic/FCP/Adobe, etc, and plugins run after installs!!

I’ve tried this 8 times. Late 2013 iMac. At about 4:40 where there are 4 options vertically listed I have neither mouse nor keyboard arrow capabilities. It doesn’t work.

My 2012 MacBook Pro is using Catalina. I keep watching these upgrade Vids, and wonder , what difference will updating make? As things are, everything I use my MacBook for, works perfectly. Your advice would be gratefully received. KR's Bob
Honestly, unless there's a specific application that you want to run which won't run on Catalina, it probably wouldn't be worth upgrading to Sonoma. If it works, don't fix it.

I have been trying to install MacOS 14, 13, and 11 on my MacBook Pro 2011 (early), but for some reason, the installation never ends. I always get a progress bar with a message saying less than one minute left and it remains like that for hours. Do you have any suggestion?
Instead of opening pop up to install sonoma mine just opens macos recovery page and requires password which then is not typing. Anyway to fix this?

When I'm on the step at minute 7:25, after holding the option button and opening my SSD disk in a boot-loader, I have the old version of the login screen from MacOS Ventura on Sonoma. I have one question though, is it possible to install Sonoma with OCLP if I have two partitions, one for OSX and one for Linux? I'm just a bit worried because OCLP is a bootloader so I might not be able to get back into my Linux system? Not sure if that's how it works, thanks!!
The OpenCore bootloader is only installed on your macOS partition. You'll still be able to choose the Linux bootloader by holding Option as you turn the Mac on. Or, you can boot using the OpenCore bootloader which should automatically detect your Linux installation and it'll appear in the OpenCore boot picker. I have Ubuntu Linux, Windows 11 and macOS Sonoma installed on my Intel Mac using OpenCore.

I'm trying to upgrade a 2014 macbook air but in disk utility, it only shows media zero kb. It's running Big Sur just fine but it won't let me upgrade with open core. I can start holding Cmd-R & it shows Macintosh HD. I went into it there & partitioned the SSD but still the same thing. Any suggestions

That sounds like you have some sort of antivirus utility installed, like "Clean my Mac X" or similar.
Thank you for the video. I followed your video and updated my early 2015 MacBook Pro to Sonoma without any issues. I used the latest OCLP to install it and it's 95% the same as your video. There is only a very tiny difference but I can still manage it. Thanks again!
How do we know we’re downloading an official, virus-free copy of Sonoma?
All OCLP does is download Sonoma from Apple. If you don't want to allow OCLP to download it for you, you can download it yourself and click "Use existing macOS installer" instead of "Download macOS installer".

Open Terminal. Type "softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 14.4" and hit enter.
How much time does it take to boot up. Coz i feel like i am getting stuck at the final boot, the progress bar looks like it's stuck.

Yes, but, Apple occasionally makes changes to the OS that means waiting for an OCLP update before you can update the OS.

I'm running my Mac on Catalina, which I downloaded the patch and updated from high Sierra to Catalina, I can't open some apps like chrome or download the whatsapp app itself, if I use this update shown in the video to maybe any of these versions, will I still get these issues

Yes you can still update.
I encountered a problem installing the OS after downloading it. Although I successfully downloaded it, when I reached the step to select the local macOS installer, the window displayed 'Install macOS Sonoma (requires High Sierra)' in a faded color. I would appreciate your advice on this.

Update: Successful install of Sonoma on my Mac mini 2014 to which I've added an NVMe SSD. Had to do it a second time as it didn't work first time around. Looks good, just about to load up the stuff from the external drive with Time Machine. Thanks again, Bar Tech. Subbed and Liked.
