    Most folks don’t think about how physical these young men and women have to be. Stand in place and mark time high step style for a minute and then think about marching, performing and band uniforms are not the lightest of clothing. Hats off to y’all!

      Yeah, this would’ve been after 4 or 5 hours of marching, dancing, and playing in the stands. The only thing that can compare to marching in an HBCU band is training for a Triathlon or being the Navy SEALS. Lol

      Marching band ,means just what it says which takes a lots of physical endurance and coronation keeping in step with cadence of the drums.I served time in the army and knows all about drill marching standing up for hours in parade ceremonies. I always envied the WW2 German army soldiers goose stepping in their parades at times with rifles and combat equipment ,I believe it takes more energy goose step marching than what it takes marching in the U S army, of course soldiers are conditioned,taking nothing away from theses college students who must be in good physical shape as well.

      I don't think military precision is the right term to describe this band/line. Definitely no where near what military bands look like and the style they march, play, and preform with they're instruments couldn't be any more different from each other. But I assume what you mean by "precision" is how professional, neat, and clean this drumline is and I'd agree with you there. If you want to see high class drumming but in a more military manners/style, I'd suggest checking Drum and Bugle Corps international (DCI)

      I feel u, I grew up less than a mile 4rm Grambling State campus and I can even recall being in class one day and they were onda field practicing. This was b4 Robinson Stadium, so school was right next 2da field. We're tryna concentrate and suddenly the drummers start with Housequake by Prince!!! Now imagine being in high school, black, and expected 2 ignore and concentrate. It was sooo loud and funky that our teacher said "ok guys, put ur pencils down and relax 4 a minute, ha ha ha!" We all laughed and starting jamming in our seats 😂 That was sooo cool!!!

    I was stationed at Portsmouth Naval Hospital back in the early 80s. I come from a Jazz/Big Band musical family background. Anyhow there's Julliard, Rochester and Berkley. Been to them all in one form or another. (My wife and her sisters were Berkley, Rochester and Julliard products.) Then there is Norfolk State's Music Program at the top of the heap when it comes to putting out the finest working musicians to be had. The only Non-Blacks I knew there were in NSU's Music School, myself included. From Rock to Country music was represented. Imagine that! The greatest artists gave Clinics at Norfolk 'Soul' University as we knew it and I made it a point to attend as many as possible. Free and open. My wife said it was the BEST musical education to be had. Then again, she and her sisters had quite a few awards playing in Russia and Eastern Bloc nations before the age of 13. Norfolk 'Soul' University, says it right. Norfolk State University, where everybody was an equal regardless of race, color or creed. Best damn music education to be had. I look at this video, the white dude killing it at the toms, a couple more within the band's ranks says it all. They're kings among kings and queens. That band is tops!

    You all are right. This drumline is the best black line I've heard yet. They are pretty much on the caliber of a professional DCI line. The snares are so crisp like one man is playing. And the tenors or basses start going up and down the line so fast. I was more than impressed. WOW!!! To see this band is on my bucket list.

    • @dbnois3
      @dbnois3 5 років тому +2

      A Ceas i agree that they are the best “black line,” but i’m gonna have to disagree that they are on the caliber of a DCI line. All DCI lines are much much cleaner, while playing complicated music and doing absolutely ridiculous stick tricks. So much more attention to detail is put into a DCI show, and while this line is straight-up funky, they are playing very repetitive and simple book paired with very simple visuals that many high school lines could pull off with no problem.

    • @burdrchitect1680

      @@dbnois3 They actually had an alumni that marched with the Blue Devils for I think 2 or 3 years on quads. Marched when they won in 2009. So their line has alot of DCI influence. My close marched in MDFS and tried out for a couple of corps.

      burdrchitect 1 yeah, nothing against the individual players. I’m talking about the line its self. you know? like there could be a very simple drumline with someone like miles kenobbie, but the like would still be simple. But i do agree, this drumline is sick, and the funk is wild

Take a look at all the other HBCU drumline like Southen U and JACKSON state. Now those are simple drum lines. Also check NSU MDFS battle with NC A&T Cold Steel a couple years ago.. nice book.

      @@dbnois3 I agree with you, MDF$ has the best drumline out of all of the HBCUs. They have been playing like this for years. I graduated from high school in 1984. I remember the NSU drumline putting on a show at Armstrong - Kennedy High School in Richmond, Virginia. They even played beats with the drum sticks in their mouths. The show was amazing. That's days, more like weeks of practice and tradition. You gotta have the mind and memory, and the drive to want to do it.
      Never thought I'd remember my marching band show my freshman year but it comes to you as time goes on and then you're sitting there wondering how you did it at the end of the season.

    I’ve never watched a band perform. I’ve seen it a million times but never stopped to actually watch and think of the time put in by the person who created the whole thing. Also, what worthwhile entertainment to watch and for them to provide. What an amazing group of kids. Bravo

    Although I’m white, I really wish all colleges were more like this. You can tell the atmosphere is built around the community and just being there for a good time, and doing something they genuinely love. It’s fantastic how people are supporting everyone there too, no matter what race they are. Love to see it. :)
