How Does This Work?

- There are so many tools from the past that we don't use today. Yet there is still much about them to be admired. Let's fix this one up and see how it works.
I need to clarify something and here it is: Wire Stretcher, Clarification • Wire Stretcher, Clarif...
Made to dig into the post. Not the dirt Used them plenty till my dad made one to stretch 4 wires. He was a smart man. Rip EARL
You got it. Several people mentioned that I had it wrong, that it doesn’t dig into the dirt. Thanks for watching and hats off to your dad. Sounds like quite a man. Thanks for your visit and have a great week.
@timmynormand8082 That's great.... My Dad rigged one one that did 3. Then, my older brother made a contraption to put on a hitch that did 5 strands. My brother also made a rig to put rolls of wire on to spool out. He's a really good welder and fabricator.
@@justsmitty1709 ya that's cool he had a metal pole to put the spool if wire too. Great minds think alike Bet I have dug over thousand post holes in the woods
@timmynormand8082 Ahh ,ya, give me chills 😂
I can remember my Dad coming out with a level and checking my brother and me. Had to look good too...
You guys got it right, I was going to say the same thing. Putting it in the ground would be useless. Used all kinds of stretchers, still have my granddads old block and tackle stretcher. No thanks to that method! 🤠
The teeth on the end of the handle were not intended to be dug into the ground. Instead, that end was braced against a fence post.
That makes sense. Thanks so much for sharing with us here on the channel. Hope you enjoy the video and have a great week.
Barb wire tensioner.
I used one just like it many times on the farm. The bit on the end digs into the fence post. The pluer-type mechanism attached with a short chain clamps onto the barb wire. Putting tendios on the mechanism tightens its clamp on the wire.
After several wooden handles broke, my father replaced the wooden handle with the bar from another vinrage tool; an old bumber jack.
Handle still workkng great to this day!!
Thanks for reminding me of days gone by!
Also, to this day, I keep a set of fencing pliers in my tool bag. A great multipurpose tool!
I love it when people who have a history with these old tools, share about their experience. Thanks so much for coming by the shop for a visit. Hope to see you again soon and have a great week.
I do remember you showing the first one. Didn't know it had been that long ago. Beautiful job thanks for sharing your expertise
That’s great. That means you’ve been with me for sometime. Thanks so much for coming by regularly and hope you have a great week.
I used one of those old Fence stretchers many years ago on the farm I grew up on. Stretched a lot of Barbed wire tight with that tool. Thank you for bringing back some great memories. It was a dairy farm and we had to prevent the cows from getting it any swamps. Table Rock Farm, Tuxedo-Sloatsburg New York area.
I thoroughly enjoy hearing from people who have experience with these old tools. My extended family were dairy farmers as well, in Peshtigo Wisconsin. Thanks so much for your visit to the channel. Hope you have a great week.
Where I come from, we called that "bob" wire. It was a great way to stretch wire by one person. Being old now, I just gave mine away.
Hey !Bonjour vraiment une superbe restauration. Et encore un outil sorti de l'oublie. Très beau travail. ❤
Thank you very much for your very kind words. Always great to have you visit me here in the shop and I hope you have a great week.
Your tools are lucky to have you!
I feel lucky to have them. Thanks for your visit and hope you have a great week.
I watched the first video. Very nice! I want one. Will be very handy on the farm....
Thanks so much for watching. Here’s a video that I made on an all metal fence stretcher. Flea Market Finds and a Restoration ua-cam.com/video/ZW-es7oe1uw/v-deo.html this would be very durable. Of course, I like the feel of wood in my hands better than metal. Good luck on finding what you need and hope you have a great week.
I have no idea what is. This is like a Mr. Pete what is it video. I love these kind of videos.
Thanks so much for stopping by the shop for a visit. I’m glad you enjoyed the video and hope you have a great week.
Combination fence stretcher and finger pincher
😀 there you go, you got a multi tool. Thanks so much for your visit. Come by again soon and have a great week.
Great job. Thank you 😊
Thank you. Come back again soon and have a great day.
Its a tool used to tighten barb wire fencing . The teeth on the end of the stick go against the post put the wire into the clamp pull it around the post and the fence gets tight. I've worn the handle out on one of them back in the day.
You got it. Somebody else mention that I was doing it wrong by putting the teeth into the ground. Thanks for sharing. I hope you have a great week.
I've used one of them since I was 5 or 6 yrs old and I aint no spring chicken lol.Its a handy tool, we just used a hammer. I remember the first time I seen the fencing tool, thems a handy thing too.
Thank you so much for sharing. I enjoy hearing from people who have first-hand experience. Come back again soon and have a great week.
I think this tool is used for lifting or stretching something.Great video. Best wishes from Germany
You got the right idea. Thanks so much for stopping in for a visit. Best wishes to you there in Germany and have a great day.
Fence wire tightener. Everyone seems to be getting this one. That’s good. Take care.😊
Yes, I think my viewers are rather astute and more and more of them are familiar with these tools. Thanks for coming by and hope you have a great week.
That is a fence stretcher. Grab the wire with the plyers looking thing, put the short end against the fence post and lean on the other end.
You’re absolutely right. You hit the nail right on the head. Thanks so much for sharing and coming by the shop for a visit. Hope you have a great week.
Yip generally use it against the post , not ground , used mostly with barwire but can work with others.
Thanks so much for sharing. Several others have corrected me on the fact that it does not dig into the ground. Appreciate your visit and hope you have a great week.
Wheel wright spoke prying tool used to pry spokes into alignment with the holes.
That’s a really good guess. I think there is probably a way you could use it for that. But, it’s really a fence, puller or stretcher. Mostly for putting up barbed wire fences. Thanks so much for visiting me here in the shop. Hope to see you again soon and have a great week.
I was wondering if you do custom restoration/build work, or axe head sharpening for customers?
I haven’t done that as a regular thing, but I have restored a couple of axes for family members and friends. In the next week or two, I’ll be restoring an old limb trimmer for a friend. If you can tell me exactly what it is that you’re looking to have done I might be able to give you a better idea if I’d be interested in doing it. If you’d like to contact me directly, you can use this email: toolscouter@gmail.com. Thanks for visiting here in the shop and have a great week.
Smaller scale like this it’s a tensioner. Larger (way larger) with multiple chains spaced out it’s able to use leverage to pull stumps out of the ground.
Wow! I have not seen one of the bigger ones that you’re talking about. I have to keep an eye open. Thanks for sharing and have a good week.
@@toolscouter it’s on UA-cam. Look up horse powered stump pulling or horse stump demo. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it. You’ll see it when you see it.
I used one as a kid helping Dad with hog wire.
This would’ve been a very efficient tool for that. Thank you so much for sharing and hope you have a great week.
Yes I have !, Have one in my shed,, hope to not need it ever again,
Thanks so much for sharing. You are correct, it usually goes right along with some really hard and heavy work. It usually includes some blood sweat and tears. Thanks for visiting me here in the shop and hope you have a great week.
Wire tensioning tool for stretching fence wire??
You got it. Thanks for visiting me here in the shop and hope you have a great week.
Wire stretcher. I have two.
You’re absolutely right! Thanks so much for sharing and have a great week.
Nice video.
Thank you.
It’s a boogaloo whamdoozle
😄 I love it. Thanks for your humor and have a great week.
Fence puller?
You got it. Thanks for sharing. Come back again soon and have a great week.
It's a wire stretcher.
You’re absolutely right. Thanks for stopping by and have a great week.
Barb wire stretcher
You got it. Thanks for watching. Have a great week.
Wire strainer fencing.
You got it. Thanks for visiting me. You’re in the shop and have a great week.
Made to stretch barbed wire.
Yes it is! Thanks for stopping by and visiting me here at the channel. Hope you have a great week.
fence stretcher
You got it. Thanks so much for watching in sharing with us. Hope you have a great week.
It's a wire fence strecher
You got it. Thanks for sharing and have a great week.
Barbed wire puller.
You got it. Thanks so much for visiting me here in the shop. Hope you have a great week.
I bought one at TSC
I didn’t know they still made them like this. I’ll have to look next time. I’m in there. Thanks for your visit and hope you have a great week.
@@toolscouter thanks. I haven't seen one in many years. It was about 10 years ago when I bought one. Never even used it. My rachet tightner was my go to.
Very similar to a cant hook in function.
I could see that as well. Thank you.
I am amazed at the number of tradesmen/craftsmen who use adjustable spanner/wrenches incorrectly, if it is absolutely necessary to use an adjustable rather than the correct size spanner, the immovable part of the device should be the one that takes the strain, not the movable jaw, one of the first things I was taught as an apprentice in the 1960’s. This prevents slippage and or breakage, and possible injury.
I am sure there are a lot of people that use tools incorrectly. I’m always open to new ideas and learning how to be more efficient. Thanks for sharing and have a great day.
Dislike videos that go on and on without saying what you're fixing good bye
Pulled lots of barbed wire on locust posts. But I never put it in the ground only on the post.
Yes, several people had mentioned in other comments that I had it wrong. I can definitely see what you’re saying especially when you’re pulling wire at the top of the post, you don’t want it going down to the ground. Thanks so much for sharing with us and I hope you have a great week.
Not much leverage in the dirt , use against the post to pull each wire .
Thanks. Hope your check out my next video. Have a good one.
@@tomballard8877 if you fenced with my grandpa it was always "Horse high and hog tight"
I believe it is a hand wire strainer for fencing. You can also make one from wood only utilising a tapered dowel, but this older type is really only suitable barbed wire, whereas, yours can be used on all types of wire. Plans used to be in the weekly times farmers hand book. Australia.
Sounds like you’ve had a lot of experience in this area. I love fixing up these old tools and hearing from people like you who have used them. Always great to hear from my friends in Australia and hope you have a great week.
That bullet thought it was there for good but you freed it.
Yes, at first I thought it was a nail and I might have torn up my sawblade. Once I took a closer look and stuck my small screwdriver into it, I could tell it was softer but by then it was already scratched up so I pulled it out. Thanks for your visit and have a great week.
Glad you are enjoying fall ToolScouter. Was very cool getting to watch you work on the handle-well done!
Thank you very much for visiting me here in the shop and I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I look forward to your next visit and have a great week.
Spectacular job and beautiful repair there! 😃👍
Thanks so much. I appreciate your visit and hope you have a great week.
That tool is used to tighten fence wire. That was the fun part...!
Digging postholes and then jogging the posts (backfilling and packing)
was the worst part of fence installation...!
Boy, don’t you know it! I’ve done my share of post hole digging and I get what you mean. Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing about your experience. That’s what I love about this tool community. Have yourself a great day.
@@toolscouter : Thanks for the response to my comment. This page disappeared before I had the chance to subscribe (a pc issue), and your response enabled me to return easily...! Now subbed to your channel...!
Nicely done. That is a really cool tool. I wish my dad would've had one when i was a kid. We sure could've used it on the farm
Thank you very much. They are very efficient tools. I can imagine you probably just used gloves and muscle. These tools do offer some nice leverage to make the job go better. Thanks so much for visiting me here in the shop and I hope you have a great week.
Yes I used one of these. We didn’t ever call our home a farm. Just our land. The farmers raised cotton and rice etc. We were always repairing fence . That tool was a wire stretcher. However, we used it for other things that needed prying. My grandad was alive at the time and worked us like mules. He was in his 80’s still out in the Texas heat. Long sleeves and a large straw hat. Rolled his own smoke. Good memories!
That’s wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing about your family and first-hand experience. Come by again soon and have a great week.
No use to drive the staple home to keep the tension on the wire……way to go is to join the wire to a tensioner or knot to other end.
It seems by others answers you know how it works.
I have my father's hanging in my utility building. I know too much about how it works.
I hear that a lot from people who have used some of these tools often. When you use this tool, you’re usually putting up barbed wire, which can cause a lot of blood sweat and tears. Thanks for your visit and have a great week.
very interesting and most informative!!!
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate your visit. Have a great week.
I have scars on my hand from one of those things slipping on some barbed wire.
I don’t doubt that for a minute. I enjoy hearing from people who have first-hand experience with these tools, sorry you got hurt. Thanks for your visit and hope you have a great week.
Barb wire stretcher for working fence line.
You hit the nail on the head. Thanks for your visit and come by again soon. Have a great day.
Handy item and works great on barb wire!!!
What you say is very true. Thanks so much for visiting me here in the shop and hope you have a great week.
It's a barb wire stretcher,, you can buy them at the co-op
You’re absolutely right. I didn’t know you could still buy them. Do they look just like this one or are they configured differently? Thanks so much for your visit and hope you have a great week.
I grew up in Montana, summer jobs were mostly physical work, including repairing fences damaged over the winter. You would b wasting your time if you tried to put the teeth in soil,
It’s great to hear from people who have had first hand experience with these tools. A lot of people have mentioned that the teeth are to bite into the post and not the ground. I appreciate you sharing here on this platform and visiting me here in the shop. Hope you have a great weekend.
I knew but only because I watched you restore the first one. Love your videos and God Bless you
Thank you so much for wishing me well. Thanks for visiting me here in the shop and have a great weekend.
What is the name of the music at the end of your video?
It’s called “Snowy Peaks” part 1
Yes, it is called Snowy Peaks part 1 by Chris Haugen. This is some of the open copyright music UA-cam has available on their platform. It’s what I use to open the videos at the beginning and I use it at the end in the wrap up. Thanks so much for stopping by and have a great week.
@@toolscouter very good. Thank you
@@ToolsandTime thank you
I don't understand why you rebuilt it. As a antique it's lost all it value.
I can’t imagine that I have destroyed the value in this tool. I have seen four or five of these things and never paid more than $10 for the two that I have. I found one that had the asking price of 30 and it had been in the antique shop for quite a while. This one had a bent handle and the wood was coming apart. Have you ever seen one of these that sold for a really good price? The other one I have is an original handle. I do appreciate you coming by for a visit and sharing your thoughts even though you disagree with me. Hope you do have a great weekend.
It's a barbed wire stretcher.. but not for the ground.. I'm from South FL. Goes around a post..
Several, including you have mentioned this. It does make perfect sense as you would not want the upper wires to be stretched down to the ground to bepulled. Thanks so much for sharing and hope you have a great week.
Wire stretcher to tension barbed wire. And if you are a bull headed 14 year old and don't listen to your old man you pull too hard and the wire pops and wraps you up like a post apocalyptic mummy. Took my dad and brother about five minutes to unwrap me.
Yes, you hit the nail on the head. Sounds like you had a painful experience. Hope there weren’t too many scars. Thanks so much for sharing your first hand experience and have a great weekend.
Fence stretcher for barbed wire. Like to have a dime for every pull on that contraption I have done. All with my father or grandpa giving me he'll for pulling too hard!
I love to hear from people who have had experience with these old tools. Hopefully it wasn’t all bad with dad and grandpa. Thanks so much for stopping by the shop for a visit and sharing with us. Hope you have a great weekend.
Its all been said 😅 but never dig in the ground. The leverage is created by how close the fulcrum is to the post. Put your hip or whatever height against the handle and hammer staple
Yes, I do appreciate you stopping by and sharing. Did you see the very next video? Wire Stretcher, Clarification ua-cam.com/video/foNMfUXWAOM/v-deo.html So many people commented, and it made perfect sense. Thanks so much for your visit and hope you had a great weekend.
❤ old tools. Great video. I knew it was a fence stretcher, I started using one when I was 12. Dad's was a little bit different design. My wife and I have a lot of antique tools hanging on the porch walls of our log home. A few of them we aren't sure of what they were used for.
I enjoy hearing from people who have use these tools. I can only imagine that the front of your log home looks fantastic. I love to see tools hanging on old barns and porches. Thanks so much for sharing and stopping by for a visit. I hope you have a great day.
I’ve stretched many a mile of wire and used many different types of stretchers but I haven’t used one like that. I’ve seen some but never used one.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I enjoy hearing from people who have real life experience with these old tools even if you haven’t use this particular one. Thanks so much for your visit and hope you have a great week.
You should look into having wood stabilized, instead of replacing it.
Really! I will have to look into that. Is it a simple process? The other problem with the handle was it was bent. I do appreciate the suggestion and hope you have a great day.
It is a milibilifier. If something falls out of milibilification spec, you'll need a remilibilificator to put it back to spec.
😃 I love it! Thanks so much for sharing and hope you have a great week
If I'm not mistaken it is used to pull fencing wire tight.
You hit the nail right on the head. Always great to have you come visit me here in the shop. Hope you have a great week.
I would imagine that the end would be put against the post then leavered, thet would mean it would be able to be used no mater how highthe wire was from the ground otherwise you could only use itforthe low wire
You’re absolutely right. Several viewers called me out on that and I made this video as a correction. Wire Stretcher, Clarification
ua-cam.com/video/foNMfUXWAOM/v-deo.html hope you’ll take the time to check it out. Have a great day.
It's an old barb wire fence streaming tool for putting up 2 to 5 strands of barbed wire fence.
Sounds like you know what you’re talking about. Thanks so much for stopping by my shop for a visit. Hope to see you again soon and have a great day.
As a fence stretcher I used the back bumper on my F 150, a steel bar and a block and tackle. Oh and first gear in the pickup.
🤣🤣🤣 yes, yes, that works too! Thanks so much for sharing and have a great day.
Still have a wire stretcher similar to that out in one of my out buildings.
Sounds like you have some buildings that would be fun to look through. Thanks so much for your visit and I hope you have a great day.
I know that's a wire stretcher, I got one nobody been able to figure out how to use.
😄😄 the important thing is that you know how. Thanks so much for visiting me here in the shop and have a great weekend.
I used them to stretch barb wire. It helped to tighten it .
You got it. Thanks for sharing about your real life experience with this tool and I hope you have a great day.
I know that they were not on the original, but I would like to see washers under the nuts. An excellent job.
That would probably be a really good idea. The bolts that I used were fairly long enough and I don’t think I could’ve put washers under them. I would’ve had to have purchased them, but decided to use what I had. Thanks so much for sharing your kind words and I hope you have a great week.
Used one on my dads farm, stretching fences
I can imagine. Putting a fence around the farm would’ve been a good job for this tool. Thanks so much for visiting here in the shop and hope you have a great weekend.
It’s a fence stretcher ! I’ve used one several times
You hit the nail on the head. Thanks for sharing, I enjoy hearing from people who have use these tools. Hope to see you again soon and have a great day.
Old wire fence stretcher. Clamp the wire then lever it on a fence post👍🇺🇸

This us a wire puller for barbed wire or smooth wire
You hit the nail on the head. Thanks for stopping by for a visit and sharing your thoughts. Hope you have a great week.
Yeah we would use a small pick up pulled until the tires spun been nailed 14:14
😄 I would like to have seen that. Not you getting hurt, but using the pick up. Thanks for sharing and have a great week.
Used for hanging Wellington Boots or Waders.
😄😄😄 it sounds like you’re rather ingenious, and I love your humor. Thanks so much for making me smile and have yourself a great day.
I'm very old, grew up on a farm in the south. But I've never seen this wire stretcher.
That’s not very surprising. There are a bunch of them on the market. I have several that are all metal and one of them that is a split handle or maybe you would call it an articulated handle I don’t know. Thanks so much for stopping by the channel for a visit. Hope you have a great day.
It's also used in some BDSM activities.
😄 I have no idea. Have a great week.
That is the coolest way to dip a handle. What do you use ,oil, varnish, stain??
Thank you. It’s boiled Linseed oil. I think it’s the best way to saturate the handle and get the best penetration into the grain. Thanks for your visit and hope you have a great week.
Wonderful work. That turned out very nice. 👍
Thank you very much. I’m glad you enjoyed it and I was pleased with how it turned out. Come back again soon and have a great week.
it does not go into the ground, it goes into the post.
Several others have mentioned the same thing. I think I’m gonna have to make a small video for a retraction. I do appreciate you coming by to sharing your thoughts and hope you have a great week.
My old dentist had a smaller version 😂
😁😁 your dentist must’ve been very unique. Thanks for making me smile and have a great day.
I actually have one very similar to yours.
