  • Following the OGL controversy, Wizards of the Coast promised the 2024 edition of Dungeons and Dragons would get an SRD version released under the creative commons, but ever since then things have been pretty quite.
    But today WotC reconfirmed that pledge and gave us some more details on the timeline for this new SRD.

    This is amazing news for the 3pp community as far as I'm concerned, but I'd love to hear what y'all think about this news! I also want to hear about how you feel about the 2024 version of D&D in general; are you excited for the rules revisions?

    This is great news! Looks like I may be spending many months making 2024-ready player aids.
    Some of my favorite D&D moments were from 4E.
    Thanks for the update!

    Really exciting news - good to see WotC have moved on from OGL and this just might bring me back to writing adventures for D&D.

    I''m just gonna stay that guy sitting in the dark corner booth in the tavern, wrapped in a cloak and shadows, silently keeping an eye on everyone, trusting no one. (It's my aesthetic.) But, sure, good for them for doing what they should do anyway.

    I Love All of Icarus Games' Videos!
    I Love Anto's Content!
    This is genuinely good news - I'm still someone surprised, but pleasantly so.
    I'll give WotC SOME credit, won't give them too much as it's was the bare minimum really. :D
    I'm unlikely to adopt the new rulesets wholesale... but if there's a decent price in the future, I may pick them up to flip through.
    Running a group for ~100 people would make switching somewhat difficult! :D

    if we could get 4e in CC i'd lose my mind. LOVE YOU for saying 4e is awesome.

      I think if/when they drop 4e into cc if it got a swell of 3pp support people would change their minds on it - especially in this age of VTTs.

      Absolutely no reason to think it won't, given they announced it just after the OGL fiasco last year, and are reconfirming that commitment again now.

    This is good to hear, but it ties in with how I feel WotC (and Hasbro) are going to take D&D now, particularly since BG3, it's just a brand, and licencing right for big ticket sales.
    Official content from WotC has been pretty poor for years now and with all the creative staff layoffs, A.I. art use etc I wouldn't be shocked if we see that official (at least printed, physical) content reduce to a trickle and eventually dries up entirely, while they let the 3rd party creators (who've been doing what D&D was always really all about- creating their own stuff with the core rules as framework) go through the hassle of getting the physical stuff printed and sold.
    It'll be interesting to come back in 5, or 10 years to see how this all pans out!

      Oh 100% Hasbro want to license the ever living crap out of D&D, and I am totally fine with that. Licensing the IP is (almost) free profit for the company, and can allow them to do a lot of stuff they wouldn't be able to otherwise.
      The quality of official D&D products is super subjective. I took a pretty big break between Monsters of the Multiverse and then Book of Many things, but I really, really liked BoMT. Mainline D&D books are *inconsistent* in their quality, but that has always been the case. During the days of 3/.5 they were churning out a metric ton of books and the quality of them was absolutely all over the place. I've only read 5 of the 4th edition books, but they've all been excellent IMO.
      I think the big change during 5th edition is that WotC seems to think their primary role is to provide you with big campaign books - the story - and not options and cool new gameplay elements. During previous editions we got loads of splatbooks devoted to adding items, new mechanics, GM tools, and more, but for the most part in 5e all we've gotten is 2-3 long term adventure books a year, a setting book, an anthology book, and then every 4-5 years we get an "of everything" book.

      @@IcarusGames tabletop has been a wild ride for me. As a student it was a 3 nights a week thing with whatever systems we could get our mits on to a 20 year dry spell- I 'got out' not long after 3e dropped, I was there for the insanity levels of published content and merch during the 2e days, (where every class had it's own addon rulebook, every game world had it's own belt buckle and we had the golden age of the AD&D netbook .txt files lol...) and got 'back in' a couple of years ago with the 5e stuff.
      While the game itself is lot more player friendly, prettier looking and slicker now I really don't feel the official stuff racks up the same in terms of content. Sure it's D&D and like you say it's always been inconsistent, Some of it is great don't get me wrong (looking at you Frostmaiden) but nearly all of it niggles me with the feeling that it's more rushed to meet a release schedule, printed and shipped for the sake a quarterly report rather than being well (or at least potentially better) written. A lot of the 3rd party stuff though, the content created by people with passion, totally broadsides the corporate profit mega corp material, I'm sure you get what I'm trying to say- It's the 3rd party creators, the DMS like you and me that'll keep the game going at the tabletop were people scribble note and roll dice ultimately.
      Even if I never bought another thing, there's enough on my shelf now to keep me running games until I die, and then some, so I'm not overly worried how *new* 5e goes 😅

    Your thumbnail is wrong. There is no "NEW OGL", this is being done under Creative Commons.

    • @IcarusGames
      @IcarusGames  Місяць тому +4

      You are completely correct, but OGL is more immediately understandable to a broader range of folks within the small space available in a thumbnail than "creative commons", or abbreviating to CC.

    • @someguy5218
      @someguy5218 Місяць тому +1

      @@IcarusGames Then why not just say "New SRD" which is accurate to what's happening? Most people now associate the OGL with negativity and restrictions, which is not what's happened here.

    • @IcarusGames
      @IcarusGames  Місяць тому +2

      @@someguy5218 "New SRD" is actually a great suggestion, and I will change it!
      It's one of those things that come with the territory when you're a youtuber - news will drop several hours after the end of your usual work day and you want to make timely content about it, but you're also always having to play the YT game too, which means considering appeal, clickability and all that jazz when really all you want to do is make the video and share the news with people, but if you don't play the game, no one sees the video 🙃

    • @someguy5218
      @someguy5218 Місяць тому

      @@IcarusGames Yeah, I get that. It's just that I know a lot of channels try to put as negative a spin as possible on WotC news. Just mentioning the OGL seems to rile people up these days.

    • @IcarusGames
      @IcarusGames  Місяць тому +1

      @@someguy5218 Yeah I've got no interest in bashing WotC for the sake of it. The OGL fiasco sucked, but for the most part they've been doing what they said they would do to make things right since then. Corporations are still going to do corporate stuff, so there's still plenty I don't like at the corporate level, but I'm not here to bash WotC at every turn just for existing at this point. I'm excited for the new books and the future of D&D and want to be a place for positive enjoyment of the hobby.
