  • SaharaTV caught up with Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the former chairman of Nigeria's National Electoral Commission (NEC), after he delivered a public lecture on elections in Africa at the City University of New York.
In this interview, Prof. Nwosu explained the circumstances leading to the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. He confirms that the election, adjudged to be the freest and fairest in Nigeria's history, was won by Chief M.K.O Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Professor Nwosu mentioned names of several characters involved in the schemes that led to the annulment of the election, among them current Nigerian senate President David Mark.

I am happy Prof. Nwosu is alive. I am happy that this son of Igboland has shown what Igbos are made of. This man is and will always be a hero. As a Yorubaman, I voted on June 12, 1993 never expecting MKO Abiola to win. But he won. We were all so elated until the criminals running Nigeria from Babangida to Abacha, David Mark to Nyako decided to annul the election. Where is David Mark today? Where is Babangida today and their co-collaborator Obasanjo? Nigeria will not see progress and advance until these criminals are jailed and made to pay for their crimes. Thank you once again, Prof. Nwosu.

Terratiger what was Obasanjo's with the annulment? Was he part of the process or he forced Babangida to conduct election and hand over as promised when he took over from Buhari! @Abisola Abiodun in fairness tó the man, OBJ did his best with conferences he organised condemning military rule in Nigeria and Africa, and gathered some leaders across Africa and from EU and US! That got Abacha annoyed and led to OBJs incarceration and almost died in detention! Yar'Adua didn't come back alive, even Abiola himself died in that struggle!

A good account of events by Prof Nwosu... a pity that the intellect of such men have been misused and abused indiscriminately by the military regimes in Nigeria, if Nigeria is to survive and be a true force to be reckoned with in the world, the future leadership must adopt ideological basis politics, harness and uphold the integrity of our intellectual and human capital prior to and when making critical national decisions, be truthful, transparent and fair, build and respect institutions that would enable good governance and promote the highest levels of excellence at all the three arms of government, eradicate the rulership mentality at all levels and learn to govern with responsibility and accountability across all levels of government and society. Thank you Prof.
On a more wider context, the above narration is a typical microcosm of the Black Man's problem in African and across the world and that is the "Rulership mentality", power means RULE with impunity to the average Black folk, the less we RULE against ourselves and our interests as a people the closer we get to unity and common purpose to protect and love ourselves wherever we find ourselves in the world. Lives were lost as a result of the June 12 annulment and no progress made as a country since then, we are still consumed by the Rulership mindset even in a supposedly democratic regime.
Even in the current democratic dispensation, Nigerian leaders are still not trained to engage and appreciate "intellect" and the value of intellectual engagement on matters of critical national importance, for that the country as a whole will continue to pay the price where religion and tribal affinity drives policy and governance.
Solution - As a Nigerian and a Black Man wherever you are, love yourself and your people, think before you speak and vote, vote for change as its time to change.

Professot Nwosu is correct in defending his gallant stand in handling the June 12 election but he was not party to the international pressures being put on Nigeria by the US., the UK and Europe to prevent Abiola from becoming President of Nigeria.. At the risk of annoying people I shall point out again that while it is no doubt true that IBB voided the June 12 election and precipitated a national emergency the truth behind that has never been fully understood by the Nigerian populace. The Nigerian military (David Mark, Aliyu Mohammed Gusau and others on the Council) were adamant that the Babangida government should never allow Abiola to run for office. The basis for this was the information being circulated in Washington, London and Lagos of Abiola’s alleged ties to the international drugs business. The US, in particular, had expressed its strong opposition to Abiola as President; not because of his politics or allegations of corruption, but rather for the evidence they felt was correct and compelling about Abiola’s alleged drugs connections.
This was raised in the Military Council on three occasions before the election.and Babangida was warned about allowing the election to proceed. He refused to take a decision until it was almost too late. When he did, he precipitated the crisis of June 12. His friends in the military supported him in that decision but were appalled by IBB’s lack of decisiveness. The US Ambassador Lannon Walker and the British Ambassador were brought to Aso Rock and spoke directly to the Military Council. Then IBB stopped the election; but his dithering made the impact worse.
The NEC and Nwosu acted correctly and followed the Constitutional mandate to the letter.. However, this decision to cancel the election was a political decision, not an electoral procedural problem. It was not an internal Nigerian problem but part of a much wider international crossroad for the country.

The coup that brought IBB into power or removed Buhari and the multiple coups that were averted or countered during IBB regime were led by Abacha. IBB respected Abacha so much and even feared him because almost all the GOCs or military commanders were loyal to him than any body. Do you know that Abacha was also a full star general in 1993 while IBB was still head of state? That has never happened in the history of Nigeria. IBB realize he couldn't do without Abacha, so both of them agreed to work together and that IBB will step aside, to allow Abacha take power from Shonekan!

I am surprised on the level. of incompetence and lack of courage of NEC chairman, by not announcing the winner of 1993 presidential election. Why did he attend the security meeting he wasn't invited. This is a high level of gullibility. He could have allowed them to stop him from conducting the election than to waste our resources without the courage to pronounce the winner and let the ruling class decide either to handover or not. No need buying the book. In the interview, chairman demonstrated a high of fear for his personal safety at the expenses of his fellow Nigerians. Take a critical review on the economic waste thereafter. My opinion. Christopher Ejem, founder IDEA for African Development (IFAD).

What hasn't an Igbo man done for the Yorubas to get to the top positions of the country but, up until now, we are still seen as their worst enemies? If I were they, I would have known very sincerely that their best friends are the Igbos but, the likes of thief Tinubu and his criminal son in Britain by the name, Adeyinka grandson won't see that as a better reason....well, God has the final judgement in all!

It’s part of that injustice Igbos have been fighting against.
They celebrate Abiola’s victory and nobody talks about the man who maintained sanity in conducting that election.
No reasonable person would talk about June 12th election without mentioning this great man.
Prof. Humphrey Nwosu you are a great legend and will be remembered by many Nigerians who cherishes integrity and honesty.
