"I can't even finish my air combo cause we're in the subway."
As a martial artist who spars regularly, I can confirm this is an authentic problem people run into when fighting.
God bless you
Lol.
Heyas Justin, Ghostpilot here! I played this a bit back in the day. It's got some jank for sure, but also some cool ideas. One of my favorite mechanics is the meter management system. Your meter has tiers, so to speak (1/2/3). You may have noticed that some supers (like the lighting blast in the air) only used the middle part of the bar. That's because it's a tier 2 super. What you could do there is hit left trigger to shift your Tier 3 meter into your tier 2 and do it again.
Loose approximation, but basically the meter for tier 1 supers were like 10 points, Tier 2 were like 15 points, and Tier 3 were 20. So if you used your tier 3 super, you could shift the meters from your tier 1 and tier 2 to do another tier 3. Or if you wanted to spam tier 1's, you do a bunch if you had a full stock of tier 2 and 3 meters. Either way, they'd get scaled heavily, but it was very cool stuff.
Should you ever revisit it (or play the sequel), I'd highly recommend experimenting with the meter system. It really opens the game up substantially!
Fam, this is some big info. Thank you.
There isn’t a sequel after this by the way.
@@BirdNerd375 Correct! My mistake: it was the 3rd and final entry in the X-Men Mutant Academy series.
Meter management is absolutely one my favorite innovations in this game! I speedrun Next Dimension and being able to build up enough meter to transfer to Level 3 in a single combo is an integral part of going fast. At least in story mode. In arcade mode you just pick Psylocke and nuke folks with her super fast infinite.
same for the mutant academy games except MA2 is actually worth playing.
"Magneto broken?"
Justin, this is Mahvel, of course he's broken
Baby*
@@YukonJack you're so right, how could I forget the meme
Game had stage transitions before Injusttice
I think DOA2 did it first though, if that release year is correct on the game tag section
@@carlosaugusto9821 probably
@@carlosaugusto9821 I think Capcom’s X-Men: Children of the Atom was the first fighting game to have them. Some of those first Marvel fighting games Capcom made had them...kind of a surprise they never brought them back.
Mortal Kombat 3 did them too, and that’s the reason Dead or Alive had stage transitions. I remember reading some interview with Tomonobu Itagaki while he was still at Team Ninja where he said he got the idea from Mortal Kombat.
Tournament Fighters also had stage transitions back in the 93…I think a few fighting games did but I’m not sure which were the first
I remember MK3 also had them
Dude when you mentioned Magneto looking like a South Park character i instantly wanted to see him modded into looking like Professor Chaos.
Yo those combos when you figure them out are pretty lit.
I loved playing this game with my friends. Unironically beast and toad were some of the best characters in that game
Did anyone else notice that the timer stopped during Wolverine's level 1 super? Seems like a good call by the developers. Imagine getting timed out by someone spamming level 1s.
Yeah in this game you can get five level ones so makes sense to limit it
X Men: Next Dimension, aka Mutant Academy 3
Nope. 😅
mutant academy was dope, this game is shitty.
Tbh I enjoyed this game. I still have it on pcsx2 😊
I'd love to see Justin try Rise of the Imperfects.
Remember loving this as a kid, was janky and some of the models looked butt ugly. But it was so damn fun and some of the character animations are really good.
Watching that combo evolve and branch out in different strategic ways was such a masterclass into fighting game theory. I've never learned so much about playing fighting games as I have with this amazing discombery.
This was my shit back in the day.
I just love Magneto's face, every fiber of his being is saying: "WHY?".
He looks like he's just done with everything in this game, even more so than Justin at the end, haha.
What I learned from playing as Forge in this game:
1. Technology shall win the day
2. The Plasma Quill is ALWAYS charged.
The developer confused character ending with character bio.
How could you hate this classic?
That classic sucks lmao
@@Blankult I can tell you never played it
@@therealkennybo No you can't
@@Blankult you can play it still what do you mean?
@@therealkennybo You said you could tell i never played it, i'm saying you cannot tell
The Story mode was awesome! 😁
You gotta play through it at least once.
1:03 *Mystique giving you ALL OF THAT WORK...*
Storms outfit is hilarious. Everything is covered but her ass 😂
The character models are so caked up in this game. It's wild.
Like it should be
The good ole days! Back when women looked good in games. Despite looking like blocks and triangles
@@delawarecomicdude4333 Amen
Bro I haven't seen a jank game on here for soooo long. Bro not gonna lie those these combos were looking so sick though.
A janky glitchy masterpiece
Dude. I got this game just a couple months back for childhood nostalgia. I was a huge fan. After playing it recently I’ll definitely say it’s jank and tough, but it was still a fun time re-experiencing it.
Check out sandalwoodgrips
Nah this game here is a classic, you just got to get good, that storm combo you just find is just the begining.
Goat that Combo was sick 😂
still gotta give them credit, this game had an actual story mode and stage transitions
Uh, we didn't add a final boss fight, so just have them fight Forge four times.
1:56 Nawwwww that gun blast to DDT is hard
Man i had this game. Its bringing back bad memories lol
I remember the story mode in this game to be quite brutal. You only get three continues and the computer was very cheap. You fight a bunch of Sentinels in the first match and they can curbstomp you
Was three continues only for the Xbox and PS2 versions? I only played it for game cube. Because the game cube version was developed from a different team than the other two systems.
My guy, when are you playing the most mediocre of mediocre of superhero Fighting games: JL Task Force
This seems like it could've been an okay game if it had more time (and better voicework). That aircombo into otg pickup into super was kind of sick tbh
So floaty...the impact is like landing on a feather pillow
WHAT?!!! JUSTIN HATES THIS CLASSIC?!!!!
Sad to know that he hates a Marvel fighting game
This “classic” is not good
He should be playing Mutant Academy 2 online (if possible). It's mad fun.
"Lets see Cyclops do that"
i always liked that mystique uses her cannon for movement in this game series.
loved playing like her in mutant academy 2.
As an observer the game seems jank and the sudden 4/7 rounds last fight (against Forge?) with no real story ending makes the game seem woefully unfinished, but Storm's got an awesome variety of special moves here. Also, Patrick Stewart's voice is always a nice bonus.
Reading some other comments before finishing mine it seems like you weren't actually playing the story mode, so I guess the lack of an ending and traditional final boss is because of that? Your apparent disappointment at the ending made me think that this was some sort of launch SFV situation.
11:42 Wait, that's Patrick Stewart's voice? WTF?
It's actually a really fun fighting game once you learn the ins and outs of it. Stuff get really insane and broken af once you learn the mechanics. Theres a ton of infinites and rejump loops.
This game is OK. It's no TEKKEN or KOF 2006, but it's an alright game. The main issue with X-MEN Next Dimension is the lighting on some of the stages.
WHENS MAHVEL? oh...
Yo, you buggin’. Me and my friends would battle on this game for days. The possibilities for combos almost seemed endless. Special fight interactions with the stages for different characters. 4 levels of supers! If you practiced/played it more you’d probably be taking your judgement back. We played it on PS2 & Gamecube. Epic gameplay. Nothing but fond memories.
A new Marvel fighting game would be dope. Just Marvel. No Capcom, as much as I enjoy the MvC games.
Another would be Marvel vs. DC, but that one might as well not have high expectations. There's always MUGEN. lol
This is one of those games where I know it's destined for the Jankyard... heck, it _lives_ in the Jankyard... but I kinda love firing it up and messing with it every once in awhile anyway. It doesn't have the fighting game fundamentals nailed, but has all the unearned bombast and crazy features of a big deal fighting game. Love the attitude 😂 Love seeing you take this on finally, Justin!
Now, onto Tao Feng...
holy shit this just gave me a flashback to my childhood. I was playing with my cousins and after storm's intro: "I smell defeat in the air", one of them said: "well maybe you should wash them."
Looks pretty stiff and weak but compared to some of the stuff Matt plays man, this is P good
So the ending is just a character bio?...🤣
I like this game but story mode can suck it it is very hard especially sentinal fights are annoying
Ngl, I unironically love the hell out of this game. In fact, I think this game is what made Nightcrawler my favourite X-Men character.
Next dimension was lit af. Psylocke and nightcrawler were the best.
Grew up on this one! It's jank as hell, but I had a lot of fun with it. Toad all day!
Wong: "How am I supposed to block that?"
Magneto: *"You don't..."* 😈
I had a lot of fun playing this game even though I was pretty terrible. I need to play it again.
Bro this game is a CLASSIC? How could you say this?
Mannn what? I loved this game growing up, still got it on disk 😂
I never knew NRS made a X-Men game. 😋
This game was made by Activision as well as the Mutant Academy games.
Bro you should look up the combo vid for this. They have some really stylish ones.
I got this game😃
I have to say, the music in that game SUCKED.
dude you should try my favorite childhood fighting game "fighter's destiny!" I think you'd really enjoy it!
watching justin do the one minute cow challenge would be hilarious
Nah this game is GOATED. Justin didn't understand the combo systems mechanics, which is fine because they're not super intuitive, but once you've got them down this game becomes a real gem.
The endings just being a voice clip and bio in the background is hysterical
Reminds me of the Street Fighter EX games
this kusoge looks like injustice
That air combo starter is reminding me of GGstrive.I see where he got it from.
I loved a lot of the advancements compared to MA2, graphics, animations, environment, outfits etc...if it had a bit more polish, this would've been a great game
Had this game on my Tiger handheld electronics video game system. The memories
Played this game a TON when I was younger. Had an absolute blast, too.
Might not be the greatest, but it definitely had some cool ideas and concepts, for sure.
I remember as a wee lad of 12 buying this alongside my first Gamecube, and having it be my first fighting game before even understanding what that was, needless to say I mostly just remember struggling endlessly on the first fight being unable to do any kind of combos but being really impressed by the graphics compared to my old N64.
Also Storm is 5'11" and 127lbs? Girl you are medically underweight, please make an appointment with Dr McCoy!
X-Men: Next Dimension makes me wish Activision just went to Capcom for a new X-Men fighting game. Like the Mutant Academy games are just whatever, they don’t hurt, Marvel vs Capcom 2 is still pretty new and they’re doing the Capcom vs SNK games at that time. But by 2003 it’s like: Damn, I wish Capcom was making this. And Capcom is making Zelda games for the Gameboy at this time, so it’s not even some pie in the sky idea that Activision could’ve gotten them for an X-Men fighting game in the early 2000s
Hell, given the developer is Paradox Development, it’s too bad X-Men: Next Dimension isn’t just a Power Stone like fully 3D fighting game like the VS mode in their Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks game a couple years later.
Imma let you guys watch and decide on this game.... End of video - AHHHHH That game was TRASH!!!
This game is insanely broken. Sabertooth has a fullscreen infinite that makes gambit automatically lose after round 1. Xbox has the best version of this game since it has another character the other two do not. At the end of the day though 2 is still the only good game in this series.
Used to play this heavily as a child on da Cube, and coincidentally, just recently got a port for my PC, and mannnnn u better respect the classics. This game actually has a fruitful practice and training mode, actual genuine combos, one of the greatest X-Men-Character inclusions in Marvel MEDIA in general, different fighting archetypes, a nice story mode with a nice story (but also relentlessly egregious CPU), and the whole shebang. It’s models and physics were just ugly and broken, but this is damn near one of the greatest 3D fighters out some respect
1:22 this was my favorite gag in one of the other videos , glad it returned lol😂
Also if your taking suggestions. My I suggest the Battle Area Toshinden series. 1 and 2 are ok but 3 was my favorite. Fun characters (most are clones NGL lol) and great fuckin music 🎶.
Justin if you're ever interested in learning more about this hidden gem, I've got hundreds of videos digging into its nuts, bolts, and jank!
You should play Fight Club for PS2. The game is bad, but kinda fun to play
They did the Colosseum stage before Tekken 8. 😄
I used to collect X-Men comics back in the day, and I never knew Storm to exploit the “Dive-uhhh KICK!!!” So much in her battles 🤓
“Got six reasons for you to walk away”
- Wolverine
This was hard to watch
This is definitely a classic game Justin and the display isn't too janky at all. Great gameplay as you were cooking it up with storm ❤love you Justin my friend idol and inspiration have a good weekend God bless stay safe and healthy
As a person who's loved Gambit for over 30 years, to see that character design, and the way they animated the flimsy flip-flop of the cards he throws....this game needs to be eliminated. lol
How are you so good at fighting games and yet struggling with this one?
This should be child's play for you, damn near every character has an infinite air juggle and ranged attacks are busted.
I knew it was this game just off this title alone. It's so garbage. The load times is enough to not want to play the game
This game had potential to be the best Marvel fighting game imo but it seems like they focused too much on everything other than fighting in a rush this game just feels unfinished to me.. It's really unfortunate..
I absolutely love this game and the previous games on PS1 and yes, it is totally nostalgia-fueled love and i don't care 🤣🤣🤣
Marvel Nemesis Rise of the Imperfects 😂 now thats some JANK!!!
The amount of hours i spent on x men next demotion on ps2 😂😂 one of my favorites right up there with dbz soul calibur 2 was already a x men fan thanks to the cartoon and the live action movies that were out at the time same with the original spiderman movies ❤❤ remember getting x men legends after seeing the first movie don't remember if we ever beat it 😂😂
ultimate x-men is jank enough already why even make a game for it unless its totally inspired by Joe Mad's art : P
Dam I remember this game the story mode was brutal I kept getting thrashed made me rage quit a few times.
Nah Mutant Academy 1 and 2 on PS1 was way too fun idk what the hell this is 😂
Pull up to 6:45 on 25% speed and listen to Storm's super. You're welcome.
Sometimes justin just laughing with bad or jank fighting games but for this game you can see he is pis**d.
As jank as this looks the combos still look more fun than injustice and MK at least.
I loved this game for gc... I was a beast with night crawler
YOU SHOULD PLAY MARVEL NEMESIS if u haven't already.
No le gustará ese juego, pero el combo del minuto 9:37 estuvo brutal. 👍
