I HAVE HULL #40 VENTURE 21. A 1967 boat. 38 years now. I've rebuilt every part of it. I guess it's part of the family now.

Our Venture 21 is alive and well. It’s great to see what you are doing with yours. Keep up the good work.

I consumed a video describing a gent who popped the deck off of his Montgomery 16 and got busy with a total rebuild. There were no details whatsoever with techniques or materials but taking the deck off seems very doable if not bonded in addition to the screws.

Takes me right back to my childhood. We had one of these (a MacGregor 21). when I was a child, in the mid 80's. This is a special boat for me.

I have a Mac 22-2, which I guess was the last of this famous design. Cool to see what you are doing. I used KILZ anti-mold paint and if you clean up the interior hull (sander/grinder), the paint holds up and is trouble free. Can also use Zinsser mold killing paint I'm sure. I would do this while you have the boat apart. Your family will thank you!!

I also used the Kilz along with Rubber roofing, on the dead interior of a V25 All though i used a pressure washer to blast it clean. Looks like new inside, worth the time major improvement ( if you care about looks that is)

I got a v21 with a mooring transfer and its interesting seeing other peoples projects. I hate to admit it but I like it better than my other boat that was 6 times the price.

Just curious ... when you had all of the hull empty ... why didn't you strip away all of the chipping paint and dirt / mold ... and then tab in all of the bulkheads? I would have also painted the entire bilge and all of the storage under the berths before securing the berth tops to the bulkheads. I also noticed that you did not make each of the storage compartments individually separated and waterproof -- if you are going to go through the trouble of adding expanding foam for buoyancy, a great addition is to seal each individual compartment as crash bulkheads below the water line. I really don't mean to sound critical, but all of these suggestions will make flipping the boat easier later to get that blue water boat that you want. Nice job on the cockpit reinforcement!!!

Was surprised to see the keel winch located where it was. I have a '71 V-21 and it is inside the cabin, just at point of entry where you are replacing bulk head...was that a "mod" done by prior owner? I don't like stepping into cabin and sometime catching winch handle, but I think I like it more than having to straddle the entire system when entering and exiting the cabin...haven't seen the entire series, so perhaps you address this in a later video. Thanks for the work; always an inspiration to watch someone get in there and get 'er done.

Thanks for taking us on your adventure! I have to say whenever Anna says "sail" her accent makes it sound like 'sell' and I have to listen to the intro just to hear that!
Couple questions: 1) How will you access the cockpit drain hole/tube, which serves as the passage way for the keel cable and contains a bolt that redirects the cable slightly as the keel lowers? (Mine has developed a groove from the friction and lack of a roller/bushing and is apt to need replacing on occasion.) 2) Does your plan to have holders for poles under the cockpit plan for all the foam blocks that help keep the boat afloat in the event of a knockdown? (Mine also has blocks filling the forward area under the V-berth.)
    See ya next time! Cheers!

I still have acces to the bolt, i did however remove it, install a section of galvanized pipe filled with grease around the bolt which makes keel operations much smoother. (Huge pain getting it installed with the keel in the way but it was well worth the struggle. Our boat came without the foam blocks We will be filling the areas under the quarter births with some sort of pour in foam. We are still researching product options for this.

How are you going to secure the storage lids from coming off if a knockdown occurs? I'm guessing there is a latching system. Or is this not a concern?

Great JOB! I really wanted to know about the cockpit drain hole /tube or the keel cable passageway wear bolt.. " Blue Water MacGregor " had a metal tube assembly / replacement tube - available at one time but I did not replace mine only the Bolt (my tube did not seem to be in need of replaced) Also, did you replace the Keel Lock Bolt on the very forward section of the Keel as you did not mention it in your earlier episode. Thank again for doing a great job in reporting your restoration progress. I feel better knowing I am not the only person working on a really old Venture 21.. Keep up the good work and best of luck sailing with your family.

Previous owner glassed it up. We are going to be removing the keel and painting the boat in August. Will be restoring the locking pin during that time.

I see this was 2 years ago. How has the dream progressed? I wonder if I could ask a question about the interior decking. Did you cut out the old deck? I just got a 1970 Venture and the decking has rot. There is fiberglass all the way around the edge. I am guessing factory applied. I envision cutting the glass all they way around it. Or could I cut out rot and put in openings like you did? What do you think?

I'm very curious as to why you would want auto pilot on such a small vessel. I have two 21' / 6.4 Meter Macgregors . My goal is to rent them out to finance completion of my 9.9 meter Catalina and my 9.9 meter Trojan. Liked and subscribed. Thats alot of extra storage for the small boat.

Thanks for watching and for the comment! I am working on this Autopilot system in preparation for when we purchase a bigger boat. It is by no means necessary for our current use of the boat but its just a fun project that i have enjoyed working on.

I've wondered the same thing. I follow How to sail oceans. He hardly uses an engine. Much less gadgetry. I also follow Sam Holmes. Love his videos but seems he's constantly add new electronics. I Guess its something you get people do. My goal is to learn to use a secstant efficiently. Vhs radio with GPS compact
