The National People's Army (NVA) was the armed forces of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from 1956 to 1990. The NVA was divided into:
* the Land Forces Command (Kdo. LaSK) - Geltow (near Potsdam)
* the Air Force/Air Defense Command (Kdo. LSK/LV) - Strausberg
* The command of the People's Navy (Kdo. VM) - Rostock
* the Command Grenztruppen (GT) - Pätz (officially not part of the NVA)
Graduates of the military academy of the NVA and Soviet military academies are welcomed by Erich Honecker on October 19, 1981 at the official seat of the State Council of the GDR
Officer training took place in the officer colleges:
* the land forces in Löbau and Zittau and in Prora/Rügen (foreign cadres)
* Air Force/Air Defense in Kamenz, later pilot training in Bautzen and Rothenburg
* the People's Navy in Stralsund, Schwedenschanze
* the border troops in Plauen, later in Suhl
From 1955, the Military Medical Section at the University of Greifswald and from 1981 the Military Medical Academy in Bad Saarow existed in Greifswald for the training of medical officers. To prepare for officer training, there was also a cadet school in Naumburg (Saale) from 1956 to 1960.
From 1959, selected cadres could also be delegated to study directly at various officer colleges in the Soviet Union.[37]
