Baileys is definitely a go to for Christmas for me. Whole heartedly agree and yep Johnson = total tit. I have a rule in my house, no killing and spiders, catch and release only. Hugs to Nancy, she'll be back in time 🥰 Happy Christmas guys, hope you have a great one. 🥰😝🥰🎄🎅
I just attended zoo lights in my local area and they had spider's for sale. My friend told me it's for Christmas and this has given it so much more clarification 😅
Hi girls, love your podcast! I have watched every episode so far. Keep up the good work. Unfortunately though, you completely missed the mark on this one. The info you read on the guild page is incorrect. First of, your Santa or Father Christmas finds its origin in our Sinterklaas. Dutch settlers took Sinterklaas with them when they migrated to the US. Secondly, Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet are much much older then the book you mentioned. They are part of pagan midwinter rituals that can be traced back to the days of Odin (old white man flying on a white horse over the houses in company of his two faithful ravens receiving offerings like carrots in shoes) and are celebrated all over Europe in various ways. For instance, the German Sinterklaas with his demonic helpers Krampus. There are slight variations in the rituals all over Europe and can even differ in towns or Islands. They all come down to chasing away the darkness and celebrating the coming back of the light and spring/fertility. Painting the face black historically was done to scare away bad spirits. It has absolutely nothing to do with the blackface you talk about. Blackface finds its history in the US where white people made their face black because they wouldn’t hire black actors during slavery and portrayed them as dumb. I suggest you watch the documentary “Zwart Gemaakt” by Arnold Jan Scheer, you can find it here on UA-cam. To the Dutch and as someone who grew up with Black Peter, he is a hero, a mythical being, a magical acrobat, who can easily climb the highest roofs, run over them and jump through chimneys and even central heating pipes to bring joy and presents to kids in dark days. Sinterklaas was the one you were scared of as a kid. Every one loved and wanted to be Black Pete. It is a shame that an ancient tradition like this is being ruined by people who don’t understand it and use it to push their own agenda. Thirdly, feeling offended by something is a choice you make yourself. That doesn’t make you right. Kind regards Anne (a proud Dutch woman who loves Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet)
Hiya!! So glad you are enjoying our pod 🥰 I actually say in the podcast, that the history of exactly where this came from is sketchy and is actually argued by some. But Black Pete was definitely mentioned in the book, so that is the first definite record, although tales run much farther back. Regardless of why people blacken their face, nowadays, this is hurtful and damaging to children of colour and adults who have very relevant concerns. I don't think, that in this era of enlightenment, understanding and empathy, can white people have any legitimate reason to blacken their faces, regardless of historical context or personal beliefs. People can behave how they want at home, but in the public domain, such festivals do need to be questioned. As for pushing my own personal beliefs, I tend to do it on every podcast. I give my personal opinion or suggestion. This is my podcast and I beliefs and feelings are just as valid. I really appreciate your views and context though. I did say in the pod that the festival is an amazing spectacle to many and sounds exactly as you describe. Best wishes for the holiday period. Vicky xx
Hi Vicky, I meant the general “you” not you in particular. I meant the people who are not Dutch and who dont know about our history and confuse our tradition with the US blackface which actually was offensive to black people. Black Pete is actually also celebrated in places like the Suriname and the Antille, over there people of colour actually paint their faces pitch black when celebrating and one of them paints his face white to play Sinterklaas. This was never done to mock people of colour like the US blackface was. There are some tribes in Africa who paint their faces white, should we be offended by that? Dont look for racism where there is none, it only forces us humans further apart.
I became aware of Zwarte Piet a number of years ago and had forgotten about it. Not surprised they are finally clamping down on it, especially after black lives matter and extra awareness about racism. I don't think they can say it is the Dutch version of Santa, a poor taste festival/parade.
Oh, and i look forward to this podcast every week. It's my favorite out of the ones I listen to.
Ok, how am I supposed to wait two weeks for another episode. Off to Patreon, I go!
