"Why are you still trying to steer?!" There's a lot of great little lines in Romancing the Stone. A great neo-pulp romance and very meta-aware of adventure genre tropes.
I worked on this movie as a gopher, fetching stuff and interpreting (they called me a "production assistant"- funny...). This movie was filmed in México, I went to the Hotel Xalapa where I lived to party at the bar. When I went to the bathroom, there was Michael Douglas taking a leak, I was surprised that he was shorter than me (I'm 5'10"); I talked to him and he was surprised that I spoke English, and I got the job through his recommendation! Groovy... I of course developed a huge crush on Kathleen Turner, she's gorgeous and a very nice lady, so I followed her movie career afterwards. She and Michael Douglas made a sequel to "Romancing The Stone" called "The Jewel of the Nile", and worked together in "The War of the Roses" as well as Danny DeVito, although this one focused more on a couple breaking apart and their hate for each other, but still full of over-the-top shenanigans. And of course I was blown away by Kathleen Turner in "Body Heat" with William Hurt, where she plays a Femme Fatale. But as a young guy, I felt the heat for sure... 😁 There's another fun movie with Dennis Quaid, and one where she plays a detective called "V.I. Warchowski".
There is a sequel titled "Jewel of the Nile." Not as good, but if you like these characters, you might want to check it out. There is also a dark comedy starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner (and with Danny DeVito as well) titled "The War of the Roses" about the worst divorce ever that you might also want to watch.
War of the Roses, haha! What a throwback. I remember loving that movie when it first came out. Excellent flick, but yeah, dark comedy with a capital D.
Jewel of the Nile is terrible because it was written by a Hollywood committee. The woman who wrote this movie unfortunately was killed in a car wreck before the sequel was made.
I like all three of those movies and I think of them as a trilogy even though the last one is an entirely different story but they follow an arc : "Romacing the Stone" is how they met , "Jewel of the Nile" is one of the wild adventures they have had "The War of the Roses" is how it all goes wrong at the end. Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito of course portray the three main characters in all three movies.
After watching a few of your reactions, I'm coming to appreciate your insightful comments and keen observations. Top that off with how genuine your reactions feel and are presented, I've become a fan. I particularly liked your comment about "life is tough" and how happy endings are hopeful and inspiring. I would add that, globally, times are tough (and probably to get tougher) right now so channels like yours provide a bit of relief and bright spot to the day. Keep doing what you're doing, and thanks!
That monologue at the end reminded me of listening to Jordan Peterson lecturing on fairy tales and the importance of archetypal characters and quests, and how they help us orient ourselves in a chaotic universe. Impressive.
Fun and articulate reaction to a quirky 'chick' movie. I liked this as much as your shirt. Kathleen Turner was always good value. Did you know she's the voice of Jessica Rabbit? Well done and good luck with your literary endeavours. I can see the potential - 'THE Madison Thames? I've read all your books.' Might save your life one day.
Glad you enjoyed this one. I love how Joan tries to steer through the river. The theme music is great. And "Hopeful Romantic" is a wonderful sentiment I've carried with me since seeing this in the theatre.
An aspect that seems to be disappearing from film is theme songs. Along with Alan Silvestri's wonderful score, there was a theme song for this film by Guyanese-British musician Eddy Grant. He had a huge reggae/pop/rock hit in 1982 called "Electric Avenue", and he composed and performed the eponymous theme song for this film: ua-cam.com/video/dOsVohtbgxc/v-deo.html Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner reprised their characters for the sequel "Jewel of the Nile"...which also had a great pop-song tie in by Trinidadian-British musician Billy Ocean. The music video featured Douglas, Turner and DeVito as his backup singers. ua-cam.com/video/-n3sUWR4FV4/v-deo.html Turner, Douglas and DeVito teamed up again for the 1989 dark rom-com The War of the Roses, directed by DeVito!
Thanks for giving this one a chance! Your post-reaction is thought-provoking, as usual. I agree about characters being key; I'd rather watch great characters doing mundane things than bad ones muddling through a plot-driven story
This is such a good movie! It has everything, it's funny and action packed and romantic. I love Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas together, they have such great chemistry.
Good movie, they always had good chemistry. I'm sure you know by now that there's a sequel, but don't be fooled into thinking it has any of the magic from this movie, it doesn't. If you like this duo together on screen though, check out The War of the Roses when you find the time. Very different but very entertaining movie. Danny DeVito also co-stars in that one too.
Great adventure movie, one of my alltime favorite, glad you enjoyed it. The Jewel of the Nile is the only sequel they made, not as good but worth a watch, you'll love the end 😉 PS : Totally agrees with you on happy endings.
Hi Madison! Glad you enjoyed this. I didn't even think about how much you would enjoy it since you're a writer. Perfect. Have you seen the film Stranger than Fiction with Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, Queen Latifah, and Emma Thompson? It's a fun abstract story about the writing process and the life of the character in a story. I'd be very interested to see your reaction to it. Have a great day!
Fun Fact: The actor playing Grogan in the opening western sequence is long time actor/stuntman Ted White, who was a stunt double for actors like John Wayne and Clark Gable, and most famously played Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter.
Romancing The Stone was the first big hit for director Robert Zemeckis, who would later go on to direct Back To The Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Forrest Gump.
In case you missed it, Jack's boat, Angelina, is named for the heroine in Joan's book that we saw in the opening. Alfonso Arau, who played Juan the drug lord, played a similar character in Three Amigos!, a Steve Martin/Chevy Chase/Martin Short comedy adaptation of The Magnificent Seven.
Another of my favorites with Kathleen Turner is V.I. Warshawski where she's a private detective. I wish they still made great movies like this. I wrote a romance novel back in the 80's. No one took manuscripts unless you had an agent back then so it never got published. The handwritten manuscript was damaged during Hurricane Harvey but I'm copying as well as updating it as I can but it's slow going. If I get it done I might try getting it published again.
The lady who wrote this movie, Diane Thomas, actually died in a plane crash before it was released. Michael Douglas was a friend of hers and fought for years to have this movie made and eventually just agreed to play Jack Colton. But he stayed on as producer. Until this movie, he was mostly known as a producer, not an actor. It’s one of the best chick flicks I’ve ever seen.
Seeing you react to this movie, particularly how well you identified with the main character really made this an exceptional reaction video. Thank so much for recognizing one of my 80s favorites. Your picking up on so much and appreciating it for what it is regardless of the definite sprinkling of cheese throughout the movie which I loved and remained invested much the same as you did. Best of luck to you in your writing, I hope to see you on the NY Times Best Sellers List.
The success of this film was what was needed for Zemeckis to get the studio to have confidence in the Back to the Future films to greenlight them. After them, he went on to do Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Forrest Gump. All classic films
Madison, congratulations on finishing the first draft of your first novel! When you mentioned you could relate to Joan Wilder, I thought it could be because you cry a lot or always run out of tissue. I am glad that's not the case. Whenever I get stuck creatively, I always go back to the movies or music they made me want to be a writer. This could be one of those movies. Diane Thomas wrote _Romancing the Stone_ on spec while waitressing and sold it in 1979. She was killed very tragically six years later in a car accident riding in the 1985 Porsche Carrera that Michael Douglas had given to her as a present for her work on this movie. As James Dean and others learned the hard way, a Porsche is a difficult car to learn how to handle especially on these California roads with twists and turns. Her boyfriend was driving and the road was wet and he'd been drinking and let the car get away from him. He survived. This was the only produced screenplay Thomas wrote and despite being rewritten by several men, I don't think it ever lost the touch or perspective she brought to it. For example, Jack Colton doesn't rescue Joan from Zolo in the climax. She fights him herself. I don't think that's a development a lot of male screenwriters or male leads would allow even today.
There's also a dark comedy called "War of the Roses", that also stars Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVtio. It might interest you, they are different characters, but they still have great chemistry. And I haven't seen anyone do a reaction to it either, so it might be good to do one.
1. This is a fun movie. Kind of like the B side of Indiana Jones. 2. I like Juan and PePe. 3. Danny DeVito kills! 4. Douglas and Turner also have a movie called "War of the Roses" it's not light hearted and Danny DeVito also has a role in it. 5. Thanks for doing this. Not many have. too bad.
Write us out of this one Joan Wilder. Joan Wilder? Joan Wilder?! The Joan Wilder. I read your books! My favorite part of the movie. I loved this since I was a kid, so glad you loved it too. As always, have a great day Madison
Your reaction is adorable! I saw this movie in the theatre when it originally came out and Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito were all becoming huge actors at the time so it was super fun to see them all in the same movie! Thanks for your reaction, you're super cute!! Keep smiling 🤘 🙂
FELLOW WRITER! Internet High Five! So very much enjoyed watching you enjoy this! AND I have to say that I agree with everything you said at the end about how we need happy endings. And I dd helps to give us hope in our own lives. Can't wait to read your western!
Cool and honest reaction!) Great film! I do recommend you to watch sequel "Jewel of the Nile", it maybe not that good as original, but pretty good, all main cast returns!)
I've watched a few reactors, this has to be my favourite one. Loved your analysis and reaction, one of my favourite movies and Kathleen turner was my childhood crush. Watching more.
Both these movies were liked a lot by Mom, back then when I was a teenager at home. They might have been fuel for a fascination with South America. There was another one, Ciear and Present Danger.
A true blast from the past, one of my favorites! I remember visiting Universal Studios the Summer after Romancing the Stone debuted. Part of the tour included scenery of the Colombian village and spoke of the dry milk added to the rainwater for it to show up better on film. Love, love, love this movie 🎥
You might like Throw Mama From The Train. It is partly about being a writer. It is an 80s movie, not serious at all. It also has Danny DeVito. It is really funny. I've rewatched it recently and it is still funny. Danny DeVito's mom is played by the gang leader lady from Goonies, Anne Ramsey.
OMG!! I watched this film back when my wife and I were dating. I used the pharase "you are hell and gone from Cartagena" far far longer than it was ever relevant but I love this movie. Thank you.
Great reaction to a very fun movie, Madison. Michael Douglas is fantastic as is Kathleen Turner. "Okay, Joan Wilder, write us out of this one." Hilarious scene.
First time watching you! So sweet that you identified with her and had the waterworks at the end! 😍😍😍😂😂😂👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I needed a happy movie after watching girl reactors watching the gladiator! 🥺🥺🥺😢😢😢 great movie…I see you saw it! I worked at a birthday party where Danny Devito was a guest. He made a point to leave the star-studded outdoor party and come into our tiny hot busy kitchen a few times and thank the four of us slaving away preparing food, washing dishes until 2am. A class act! We appreciated his kindness so, so much!!! Requests: Enchanted April The yellow rolls Royce Indiscreet (Cary grant Ingrid Bergman) Casablanca (Ingrid Bergman Omar sharif) The cutting edge Glengarry Glen Ross Hawks (Timothy Dalton) Jane eyre (Timothy Dalton) Persuasion (ciaran hinds) The far pavilions Animal kingdom (Australian movie) Framed (Timothy Dalton) Hot Fuzz (Timothy Dalton)
Madison, Michael Douglas was always doing "important" movies and decided to do a "fun" one. Kathleen Turner was first in a wonderful sexy movie called, Body Heat with the just-recently-died William Hurt. Maybe watch that on your own time. One fine day, you've also got to react to Somewhere in Time. You'll love the story, the music and the hotel. Stars writer Christopher Reeve, fresh from Superman and Jane Seymour.
Madison wow! That was a heck of a speech you gave after the movie. Your ideas are well thought out, strongly felt and well reasoned...I'm a bit flabbergasted. Please put me down for a copy of that book, I don't even care what it's about. Some people are just fascinating to listen to.
You are right, it would have been a shame to lose this video, your reactions were great. I will mention a sequel "The Jewel Of The Nile." Somebody else mentioned it so you might look into it. Good luck with the book.
This movie is a long time favorite of mine and my family. We recorded it off of TV, waaay back in the day, and there is a winter storm warning that plays during the recording. Later, we watched it in the summer, and when the storm warning came on, it took my mother by surprise, because she had forgotten we were watching a tape. A blizzard? In the summer? Whenever the movie gets brought up, we remember that out of place storm warning and have a chuckle over it. I'm totally on board with your stance on happy endings: Life is hard enough. Sometimes I don't want to examine the human condition or be made miserable by something that will supposedly "broaden my horizons," I just want to get away for a while and experience something fun. Fun can be as enriching, in its own way, as something ponderous and miserable that's supposed to be somehow enlightening.

Joan Wilder: "These were Italian." 😪😵😱
Jack Colton: "Now they´re practical." 🤣😉😎
"Now move it, before Batman comes home."
That's funny, considering Danny Devito played the Penguin in Batman Returns.
I don't care what anyone says... The sequel, Jewel Of the Nile is also a really enjoyable flick. You should watch that one too!
Yes! Jewel of the Nile is great! She should watch it
It was ok, certainly watchable.0
I think she is obliged to watch now!
After this movie came out, it was taught as an example of a really tight script in screenwriting classes.
"Why are you still trying to steer?!"
There's a lot of great little lines in Romancing the Stone. A great neo-pulp romance and very meta-aware of adventure genre tropes.
Often times a overlooked movie. Glad you enjoyed it. Good luck with the writing.
Always one of my favourite movies. Who doesn’t love a good old fashioned adventure romance? 😊
I worked on this movie as a gopher, fetching stuff and interpreting (they called me a "production assistant"- funny...).

both good choices but I prefer the War of the Roses. Closer to my humor style. Definitely recommend that one.

That monologue at the end reminded me of listening to Jordan Peterson lecturing on fairy tales and the importance of archetypal characters and quests, and how they help us orient ourselves in a chaotic universe. Impressive.
I love this movie. The main character actually has growth and I love that she just takes the flowers with her - what is important in life.
I just realized the guy they met in the little village, who reads her books, in this was also in The Three Amigos.
He has a plethora.
“I’m gonna riot.”
I WILL riot, y’all.”
Adorable. ☺️
The 80s had way more actually strong women than todays movies. For example in this case, she shows her strengths by her actions and choices.
This movie an absolute classic. They don’t make movies like this anymore. This movie had everything and did it perfectly.
This was always one of my favorites. A RomCom of the finest caliber.
Oh my God... I can't believe I never noticed it. And now it's so obvious. She IS Jessica Rabbit.
Loved your post-reaction thoughts on happy endings, couldn’t agree more!
I'm really happy your phone worked! 😁👍🏻
And i'm also curious if you know Crocodile Dundee (1986)?! ✌🏼
Glad you enjoyed this one. I love how Joan tries to steer through the river. The theme music is great. And "Hopeful Romantic" is a wonderful sentiment I've carried with me since seeing this in the theatre.
If you like this one, you'll also like 'Crocodile Dundee' (1986)... 😎👌
That's not a knife... THIS is a knife.
@@dan_hitchman007 😎👌
Crocodile Dundee 2 is the best one
Whew! Good thing you didn't have to riot. 😄
I never thought about how a writer might relate to this film. 🤠👍
2022 & I still loooove it.
I really appreciate your seamless pacing and efficiently spartan commentary.

My parents took ms to see this in 1984! Such a fun experience seeing it in a theater. Thank you for reacting and for your insight Madison!
Great adventure movie, one of my alltime favorite, glad you enjoyed it.
The Jewel of the Nile is the only sequel they made, not as good but worth a watch, you'll love the end 😉
PS : Totally agrees with you on happy endings.
If you love this one I have a much older movie that will become a favorite it is called "An Affair to Remember" starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.
It always makes me feel so good seeing someone genuinely enjoy something with such honest enthusiasm. Great reaction!

Great movie that kinda got lost in the amazingness of the 80s
Funny to hear DeVito make a Batman reference when he was later in a Batman movie.

"Okay, Joan Wilder, write us out of this one." Hilarious scene.
Been a long time since I saw this movie. I loved this movie as a kid. Nothing like a good old fashioned treasure hunt.
Romancing the stone is best romantic comedy ever done.
my mother and i quote this movie all the time
One of my teenage guilty pleasures.
I hadn't seen the movie in a long time, forgot how much fun it is.
Kathleen Turner was my Celebrity Crush back in the 80's and 90's. Checkout Undercover Blues starring her and Dennis Quaid.
I was just about to recommend this movie to you but then I discovered you watched it long before I subscribed. Great match for you.
That was so close! So glad you didn't have to riot.

This is a delightful comedy adventure with Kathleen Turner. If you'd like to see another, I suggest "Undercover Blues" with she & Dennis Quaid.
I like how she started welling up @ 25:26. It was very sweet.
Madison,
Michael Douglas was always doing "important" movies and decided to do a "fun" one.
You should also see "A Knight's Tale". Great ending!
"Blazing Saddles"
"Caddyshack"
"Uncle Buck"
