Some of the houses on the north side of town date back to when Mark Twain, his mother, and brother lived in Keokuk. They where wood chap-board sides that were later covered with either brick siding, aluminum siding, or vinyl siding. The empty lots are were the old houses use to be before the city, or the banks, had them removed. I visited in the 80's for three weeks. I was a guest of the Logan family. My girlfriend was called Orlando Anne (Logan).
Keokuk, the town where time stands still. I was born there too many years ago to mention. Haven't been back in years, but each time I do, it hasn't changed much. I always enjoyed going down to the locks to watch the barges go through.
I made the trip over the Mississippi years ago. It was flooded. I made a few off road stops and saw lots of Historic plaques. All those States have so much History. Thnx for the footage, looking forward to the whole trip.......John.
Been there many times But I dont go ft Madison. Go through Carthage. My aunt lives 50 mile from there. An our family farm about 50or60 mile from Keokuck.
100% The trip up the Mississippi on the Illinois side to Nauvoo is outstanding. Although the only thing that I really liked in Nauvoo was the temple. There's no toll coming from Illinois to Iowa on that Ft. Madison bridge.
You didn't see very much of town, less than 10%. Most of the old and big houses were to your right as you came off the bridge. Grand Ave runs along the river and is part of the oldest part of town. I live in a pre civil war home. Two blocks from where you were at the first stop light in town.
That is awesome! I wanted to go there and see what was there. I had an ancestor that got embarked there in the Civil war for the Trip south for the Seige of Vicksburg, Mississippi. And I Plankowned the USS Vicksburg CG-69 back in 92.
Should have turned right on 61 and went up to Grand Avenue, some of the most beautiful homes and majority civil war era construction you shall EVER find! Key o kuk class of 90 what!!!
Where did you get your info.? Most of those crappy homes on Grand Ave. were built in the 1920s. I could show you a half dozen whole towns of nicer, older historic homes in Illinois. The surviving Civil War era neighborhoods are on Bank St from 5th through 11th St. and on the near North side of town on 2nd through 4th St.! Better hurry & see what's left before the dolts at city hall tear down those too!

Hasn't changed much? More than half the city has been bulldozed, in the last 50 years!
You can watch the lock on UA-cam they livestream it

Good shots coming over the bridge ! Nothing like coming over the iron grate bridge in person .

You should've made Keokuk, Ft Madison Iowa and Navoo, Illinois an entire day trip. The bridge at Ft Madison is old and pretty cool.

tim h Thats one of the problems with travelling to places you don't know. I have no idea where the "history" is. That is what I was looking for.
