Oh, also want to add that we live on a dairy farm! I make braided fleece tugs with milker inflation ends for my dogs and for the dogs of friends! They love them!
I will second your recommendation against sticks. My dog was impaled by a stick in the back of her mouth after I let a neighborhood kid throw it to her. She was fine after a visit to the ER vet but never used sticks after that.
I thought I was smart...but I've let my puppy play with sticks in the woods. I was just ignorant. Thanks for sharing your experience, Susan! No more sticks!
Susan, I love these podcasts! You make them entertaining as well as informative. It is as if you place balance breaks in each one to keep us focused and engaged! Thank you!
I have a fit energetic dog who really is not keen on toys, tug is hard work and as we are trying to grow our agility skills, we are working on the Bring Me programme. This and the last podcast are like gold to us. Susan’s podcasts are not just informative they are entertaining, especially when watched on Utube. I was interested to hear about the danger of sticks. I throw sticks, only into water, because Zulli will retrieve in water BUT will nor reliably bring it back to me, so a lost stick is OK but not lost toy! I need to find a plan B for water, or get a really reliable retrieve. Thank you Susan.
Hi Susan! I love all of your content and eagerly consume whatever you put out almost the minute it hits the feed on any platform. I just had an incident happen with my dog that gave me ideas for podcast topics for you. My eight-month-old puppy stole a tape dispenser from me while I was wrapping gifts. He likes to play keep away, and thus he commenced the game. I knew the dispenser was dangerous so I purposely used a rare angry voice with him, which proved to be one of several mistakes I made over this short but disastrous period of time. End result: he crunched the tape dispenser instead of giving it back, eating the blade and some plastic. Needless to say, he was in surgery a few hours later and is now recovering. So here are my podcast ideas for you: 1) How to teach an instant "drop it?" I've been doing a lot of IYC and Search, as well as Mine (Tug-Sit-Run) but Keep Away overrides those for him. I also wasn't wanting to reward his Keep Away behavior but in this case, I think I should have just given him the highest-value treat possible to get the tape dispenser back. 2) When should you call the vet? In general, I find that I have been (not so much now) and that almost everyone I know is hesitant to call the vet and the answer is almost always that you should call. 3) How to manage your dog after a medical procedure? And 3b) Should you condition your dog ahead of time to wear a cone in case it ever happens? This was a long comment, thank you for reading and happy holidays! Thank you for all you do!
Somewhere I was told about the slitting the tennis ball and putting treats in it to teach a retrieve as the dog would bring it back to you so you would get the treat out for them. My dog (husky) went and got the ball and used both feet to get the treats out by himself. Our favorite tug was made of fleece that I braided with information from LOH on how to do. I made it quite long, it was great.
LOL Anyone else listening to this at home, and then the squeak happens, and WOOF WOOF half the dogs get up and start looking for this mystical toy! ^_^
These podcasts help so much with understanding my dog better. So easy to forget to look through his eyes! Today's task: look for the joy each toy brings to my dog!
Love the clarity brought by this podcast. The raspberry on a bungee would be a great one for my girl because she doesn’t like the texture of many cloth items.
Followed Susan's advice and got a milk tugger, then a milk tugger on a long braided fleece for Daffi and her BFF Scarlet to play with, now a milk tug for Scarlets Xmas gift. The girls love these!
We are getting a new puppy soon and a friend told us about your podcasts. Love them! Thank you so much. We're learning al kinds of things we should have done with our 1st two pups.
Wonderful! Thank you for your note, Janet, we're glad you are here. We have a playlist that has all the puppy essentials to help - ua-cam.com/play/PLphRRSxcMHy2hywpv3Md3HbWWPPbVF8W5.html
Our first foster dog (6 months old) would peel a tennis ball like an orange! 😆 His favorite thing was to chew a rope. Anything that was remotely rope like was his favorite. 😉😳
I have horror stories about sticks too not for fetch, but my dog would chew on any sticks she found and swallow, and at some point it got stuck on the way out, and my mom had to help her get it out, and I just heard the dog crying 😭 We tried to limit her chewing on sticks after that, which was hard because we'd already had her for so long. RIP Xena (she died old age)
I like that you did this podcast I never knew about the sticks. I am watching the International Winter Summit right now and Bob Bailey was on yesterday and you were mentioned in his lecture.
We also like the LickiMats instead of the Kongs - I know you can’t have kibble on it but we have Liver, Peanut Butter and other things spread on it! ☺️
okay, going to tip all of my dog toys out and categorise them now (oh my dog, have I been a geek in disguise my whole life) - every since I started Recallers and H360, I've actually been planning things, and categorising things all over the place lol - LOVE your podcasts - recommend them to anyone who will listen!
Susan, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the enthusiasm you put in these videos. I havent heard BOOM CHAKA LAKA in a hot minute and it had me rollinnngg hahaha.
Hi Susan, very informative episode today. I do like the idea of the bungee toy with different textures. Also against sticks and explain to dog owners why they are so dangerous. Plus agree 100% tennis balls are bad news, , the rough sandpaper texture, grinds down bottom teeth. Well done, will pass this info on to my dog friend owners.
Never thought about the sticks giving them splinters for mine love to chew on them . Will remember this for water weather and they are outside more❤❤❤❤
These podcasts are amazing, I have been watching/listening to these podcast since October 2020. I was introduced to Susan Garrett Home School the Dog by my friend Lori Beach and I can’t thank her enough for recommending the program. It has done wonders for our three rescue dogs and to see the little wins we have almost daily is inspirational. Thank you Susan and your team.
I'm getting a puppy sometime in the near futures and have been brushing up with your videos, preparing for the puppy. I haven't had a dog in the house in several years, let alone a puppy! Getting toys prepared now!
I have a 4mymerles tug along with some rope tugs. A recent addition to our tug toys is an old puppy blanket attached to a leash that has no clip, both of them were chewed up by my puppy😂❤️
Think I'm going to sacrifice one of our many fleece doggy blankets to make some braided fleece toys! Sounds like a lot of fun. Love your creative ideas because I'm not a very creative thinker myself!
This podcast’s random comment G-I-V-E-A-W-A-Y! of Susan's favourite dog toy from 4MyMerles will go to: Tatiana Fedorova! Tatiana, you can reach out to us at: wag@dogsthat.com where we will need a few private details to follow up on getting you your new toy! Lynda(TeamSusan)
My dog Nala and I play games and walk 3 times daily and have the time of our lives🐾🌲. She is well behaved, but still a powerful dog. As I am pregnant right now👣, I try my best to be and stay the person she needs and deserves❣️ A new toy with a bungee would be more gentle for my pregnant body🤰 and whatever toy would be just the best for Nala🤩. So I hope we win😇 Keep up the GREAT WORK with this podcast!!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I am behind you on the sticks. My aunts dog chased one that was thrown for down a small hill. It impaled through the roof of her mouth and into her skull. The poor girl didn't make it.
The 4mymerles toys are super rugged and durable, even for Boris, my 115lb Rottweiler/GSD who enjoys stealing firewood from the woodpile and chewing that log into sawdust. He's a super hard tugger, so the bungie grips really help both of us. He's also a huge fan of the Jolly Ball on a rope toy. He loves tossing toys into the air and catching them, but the Bring Me program has really helped make retrieving toys more valuable.
Shopped at 4 My Merles recently! nice! I am working to overcome food "distraction" (good IYC, but tough time shifting the brain from 'wheres the food?' to play), and working to tug instead (yep...distraction intensity index study happening! LOL). My guys LOVE a tug 'Chuck It Ball' (not a ball by itself - its on a tug!) and one of my guys is happy to tug on anything! Bungee/Raspberry is exciting for JERSEY! Thanks for every podcast - learning so much! (Great advice regarding sticks....my vet gave me that warning when my guys were a puppy, I would never have known!)
My dog loves the velcro food toys but he doesn't retrieve them - he takes them away to open them himself then will abandon them to run back to me hoping we'll go again. I end up with two toys, and I retrieve the first while he's chasing after the second! He retrieves a squeaky tennis ball quite nicely initially because he loves the chase and he can't do that by himself, but once he tires a little he'll take it away and lie down comfortably to squeak away at it. Oh well, we're still having fun, right? I only do tennis ball retrieves over very short distances (less than 6 feet) so he doesn't have chance to build up any speed, I never use a ball launcher, and I throw in the direction he's already moving so he doesn't twist too much. My aim is for him to grab it and keep moving so there isn't a jolt as he stops. Unfortunately he isn't nearly as interested in "dead" toys, but we're working on it.
Fabulous information Susan. I have learned so much from your videos..My dog much prefers food rewards, so I'm trying to get her you have fun and place value in playing with toys. I hope to give all your ideas a try.💕🐾
We are still working on our tugging so our favourite training toy at the moment is a gamble ball which I find easy to throw ahead. My dog Cooper always brings it back to me to open to get his cookie. For normal play he loves a soft squeaky toy.
I love this podcast! You break things down in such a simple way for people to understand and to meet people where they are at! It is one of my motivators when I start feeling tired I always feel so pumped to train after listening!! Also that pile of toys swagger is in is amazing!! 😂

Was referred to your videos when browsing a pet store for puppy supplies as I am getting a boxer puppy at the end of January:) so glad I found you! I’ve binged watched every episode and will continue to follow and learn through you to give my puppy the best training I can!
Thank you! Really interesting... I’ve “stocked up” on toys for a puppy we’re adopting... but I may have gotten a few “wrong” ones! Haha. But... I also realized I got toys suitable for when the puppy is full-grown...whoops! Maybe I’ll be able to get a couple(?!) for the puppy for the size and strength she is now following this advice!
Susan, another very bad thing about tennis balls and the reason I will never use one is a very sad story. I know someone who had a golden retriever. It was their absolute baby and they took it everywhere with them. They wouldn’t go to a restaurant if they couldn’t take their dog. Anyhow, they threw a tennis ball to the dog directly at it to catch. The dog was brilliant at doing it. However they threw the ball too hard, the dog caught it and it got stuck in his throat. They were not able to get the ball out and the dog died in front of them. Everyone that I see that is throwing balls like that to their dog, I tell this story too. It was the saddest thing ever! I had to Aussies at the time and I never gave them another tennis ball.
love the idea about the tennis ball with the rope in. One of my dog loves his Jolly Ball but it is not easy to take with us all the time :) Thank you for another great podcast and Merry Christmas in advance.
LOVE the pic of Swagger with all the toys. Now I don't feel so bad about all the toys I have bought for my girl.
Oh, also want to add that we live on a dairy farm! I make braided fleece tugs with milker inflation ends for my dogs and for the dogs of friends! They love them!
💜tater💜 “I got a stick”!!! 😅😂🤣
I will second your recommendation against sticks. My dog was impaled by a stick in the back of her mouth after I let a neighborhood kid throw it to her. She was fine after a visit to the ER vet but never used sticks after that.
I'm so glad Susan is reviewing the correct toys for teaching the retrieve
I thought I was smart...but I've let my puppy play with sticks in the woods. I was just ignorant. Thanks for sharing your experience, Susan! No more sticks!
I can't wait to go out and play fetch with my dogs today. :-)

I’d love to see an episode on training to retrieve the aerobie
So glad I found the website for various tug toys! Thank you Susan!!
Two tennis balls in two knotted socks was our first dog toy 35 years ago. I don't recall if there were available any commercial dog toys at that time!
My dog loves the crinkle sound, too!
This is really useful information. Toys are some things that I didn’t consider as much as I should have. Thanks
Followed Susan's advice and got a milk tugger, then a milk tugger on a long braided fleece for Daffi and her BFF Scarlet to play with, now a milk tug for Scarlets Xmas gift. The girls love these!
Great info, I didn't think tennis balls were that bad
This is what I need, am feeling overwhelmed. Thank you
Going to check my farms for miller’s. Grew up on my Grandparents dairy farm. Probably threw away tons of them! ☹️
👁️❤️your podcast... it led me to your blog & website. I love those to! You rock!
I would choose the rubber bone :)

Our first foster dog (6 months old) would peel a tennis ball like an orange! 😆 His favorite thing was to chew a rope. Anything that was remotely rope like was his favorite. 😉😳
Clever idea about the homemade tennis ball on a rope. Another great podcast, thank you

Such great info - so glad to know which is your all-time fav!!
These are great. Thank you!
There were a lot of good ideas. My dogs need the extra long tug toy because they love the chase but haven’t mastered retrieving.

Love the stick video and song!
Back in the day, I used to go to local racketball clubs to get all their “retired” balls. They gave them away by the bagful.
I'm loving the logic in your training. Retraining things my service dog never quite got and your program is helping with our connection
Thank you for such a lovely note and for helping your service dog @user-bt7xb6fe1k 💚
Rubber toy i would use for retrieve ❤❤❤❤⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Never thought about the sticks giving them splinters for mine love to chew on them . Will remember this for water weather and they are outside more❤❤❤❤
20:14 I really want to try this one. It’s the tennis ball on a rope with a slit for cookies.

Wonderful list of appropriate toys!
My new Corgi loves anything with a crinkle! Oh my - so many ideas in this episode!
Thanks Susan!
This is SO fantastic!!! Thank you so much, as always just so helpful and informative. Props to friendly dairy farmers :)
Great podcast as always!
A little late to the party but that podcast was so interesting!! And I'd love to be part of that raspberry toy giveaway!!
I’m so happy I found this!! Definitely using the information to buy some toys for my new puppy!
Thanks so much for the ideas! My guy will tug, but I really need a longer tug as he chomps his way up towards my hand 🤪
Going to get myself an Aerobie dog disk.

I found this video very helpful as I was having trouble with getting my dog to retrieve & this broke it all done & explained things clearly
Glad it helped 💕💕💕

Love your programmes, I’m working my way from the 1st one, as I am getting a puppy soon.
I make felted squirrels that are great for retrieve and scent them too

love the idea about the tennis ball with the rope in. One of my dog loves his Jolly Ball but it is not easy to take with us all the time :) Thank you for another great podcast and Merry Christmas in advance.
