  • Mexico is So Hot That Monkeys Are Dropping Dead From Trees | Firstpost America
    A brutal heatwave in Mexico is causing monkeys to drop dead from trees. At least 83 of the howler monkeys, a species that is considered endangered, have been found dead in the Gulf Coast state of Tabasco. Other primates rescued by residents are suffering from severe dehydration, with loss of consciousness and signs of fever. Now, volunteers are urging residents to place buckets of water and fruits to save the lives of these monkeys. Meanwhile, the Mexican Environment Ministry has launched an investigation into these deaths, as it says the possible reasons could also be malnutrition and spraying of agrochemicals. Mexico's brutal heatwave has been linked to the deaths of at least 26 people since March as well.

    I was not a believer in climate change, I am now. I lived in Mexico for years. They never had Howler monkeys falling from trees! Not only that, there was 2 feet of hail on the ground in Puebla even though it was hot. This all getting very strange. Same week, 125 F in Pakistan.

    I have a feeling this might have something to do with the illegal deforestation problem going on in Mexico. Less trees, less space, less shade. Similar to The Guardian of the Monarchs on Netflix.

    I have never heard much about monkeys in Mexico. This makes it sound like they run wild like India. I kind of thought like the US monkeys in Mexico were for the most part probably owned or in zoos. but for them to be running around like squirrels doing the US I wouldn't have thought that this is new to me

    • @alexibm2477
      @alexibm2477 20 днів тому +1

      Here in Central Mexico sure, but remember that Southern Mexico (where most of these monkeys are) is extremely dense rainforest/jungle and is the least urbanized region of Mexico, so animals run wild. My dad worked at Nestle when a big flood hit Tabasco around 2007 and they had to evacuate the distribution center because a crocodile was swimming around.
      And not only Southern Mexico. Even in Mexico City, there is a lot of super exotic wildlife. Mexico isn´t that far from Australia in terms of how crazy can the fauna be

      It quite literally is. I live in Metepec, Mexico, which is one of the highest points in the country and usually known for being COLD. Yet somehow, this Summer we are getting tropical-esque climates of very hot days. We are wearing shorts and sleeveless shirts when in other years we would be wearing two sweaters. The other day avg temp reached 27° which is what places like Cancun normally have
      Mexico City, on the other hand, reached 34° last month. Tropical level temperatures in a place that should be subhumid
