Hey Sam I just wanted to say great video on quirky things at Barnes & Noble 😃👍💯👌 speaking of Barnes & Noble I just recently went there today to pick up and buy some manga and also struck up a conversation with someone there we we're talking about favorite manga collection's. 😀
I actually have job orientation tomorrow at B&N! I watched both of the videos you have put up(I hope mine is stocked from the cheesecake factory because wow that would be really cool). The pay is a lot lower than what I'm used to but the quarantine put things into perspective for me and I'm really looking forward to working with others that loves books lile me! Thanks for the quirky video! Loved it
Thanks for watching! And have fun at orientation; it's a great place to work and loads of fun (and omg I spend far more than I should in the cafe on the treats).
Great video! I've been working in retail for 14 years and have recently been wanting a change of scenery, thinking about applying for B&N even if it is a drop in pay. Really appreciate your insight into the workplace!
Having worked retail in more than one store, B&N is definitely my favorite experience! Especially if you love working around books and working with other people who enjoy working around books it's definitely a worthwhile place to be employed. Even over the course of nearly two years that I've been here it's continued to change and grow as a company and all for the better. I'm glad my video has been helpful! If you have any specific questions about working there I'd be willing to answer them.
Great video. I loved all your stories. I worked at B&N for 15 years, at two locations, starting at a Bookstop and moving to a larger B&N store. I totally laughed when you mentioned the turning of the books. I was going to ask you about it and then BOOM! you totally brought it up. And that stuff is so funny. It's like people think they are going to change the world by doing that. Oh well... I'll add a couple stories here. Now, these were not all store specific for me but I heard about them from sister stores. There was at least one case of someone living in the store up in the ceiling panels. At night they would descend through the bathroom or break room and walk around the store. Sometimes books were found moved that had been placed specifically the night before. But, most of what got noticed was food in the fridge going missing. I know of at least two times someone drove through store windows, once in a cafe and one a man had a seizure in his car and drove into the poetry section and a customer was actually thrown onto a shelf. Once the store managers were alerted to an alarm near 3 am. When they arrived at the location it was a helium ballon that had come untied from a display and somehow triggered the alarm system. So many more stories but again, if we were in person, we could share more freely. I also recall wrapping gifts for people during the holidays. Whenever our store did not have an organization wrapping gifts we'd do it ourselves and I always enjoyed that. All in all it was a wonderful job that I was glad to have for so many years. Those were great years w great customers and coworkers. See ya...
I forgot to tell you what I did there. At my first store I was briefly children's lead but then took over cultural studies and I really rounded out our Native American section. This was back in the days when each store could determine it's own displays, tables and end caps. At my second store I was in charge of Bargain and Magazines, which also included the seasonal calendar displays. I also was often the costumed character for children's events. Most of the time when I didn't have much work to do in my section I spent most of my time at our info desk and front cash wrap. I also used to help people with questions about their Nooks. By the time I ended my 15 year career I was also in charge of all cash handling in my store. Oh yes, and they saw to it that I got in plenty of time in the cafe. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that at both jobs I also took stock out to local events where I would set up a resource table. I truly miss it. It was one of the best jobs I've ever had.
It's so interesting to hear even how little things have changed! We don't really do the costumed characters any more (though I'm not sure if that's because of covid) but one of my coworkers used to be the character since she was the only one who could fit in the costume at the time. And OMG someone living in the ceiling? That's so scary but also hilarious. We joke about having a ghost at our store since the lights will flicker randomly and books will just fall off shelves but I think I'd much rather have a. ghost than a person in the ceiling.
It's amazing that turning books backward is something that people do universally at all B&N's...though if that's the worst they do you're pretty lucky since turning the book right side around is pretty minimal effort compared to people trying to be funny by moving books (usually Bibles) to inappropriate locations
Ohmygosh yes people love to move books at our store! Someone kept moving pregnancy books to the YA section for a while and I'll find Obama books shelved wherever people think they can hide them. And more recently people have been trying to save certain volumes of manga for themselves for later and wills hove those behind games or behind other books lol.

Your videos comfort me so much. I’m so happy to find someone who loves books just as much as I do. I hope you have a good/night! 🥰
Thank you so much! That makes me so very happy to hear! I hope you have a good night/morning as well!

@@theteapotreads at my store in 08 we were all on constant watch for customers trying to setup their own racist Obama displays.
