I love Scrintal! We use it at work and also I use it personally. Great app! One thing to note though, you actually can put a board inside another board. I do it all the time since we organize team boards that link to other boards inside of the team board. So, yeah that is possible! Just search for the board name and then select the board and drag it onto the canvas of another board. Anyway, just something to note! Thanks for the great video!
I think I could've explained that better in the video, so I added a clarification in the description, but what I meant was actually displaying a whole board's contents inside another board. But I think right now I can just display the board's name. Is that right? Also, so cool you use it at work, what's the main use case for you there?
@@morganeua Got it! Sounds good. And yes, you are correct. It is just the name of another board with that name being a direct link to the board. Honestly, with how big my boards are, this is my preference unless there was a feature where it was a glimpse into the linked board without fully opening it. Anyway, yeah, we use it for work. I am on a creative team. What we have done is create databases of a lot of things like people on our team, equipment that we have, songs that we use, graphics we design, and a whole lot more. Then we use Scrintal to organize this content and use different boards for creative collaboration, brainstorming, idea writing, etc. Between the idea of everything being an object and stored as a database (any card can be on many boards and shared with people on the team) and then also being able to visualize creative flows while taking notes on these ideas has been a game changer for us. My team board has a lot of cards that are shared with others that auto update with information in them as people edit them and then we have our own linked cards that we have that we can then edit details and everything is linked to each other with backlinks while only sharing the cards to others as needed. Scrintal is one of the only PKM tools that has added the multiplayer option (see each other’s cursors on the canvas as well as see Google Doc style live typing and who is typing) so we can all collaborate with each other in one space or in our own spaces with shared cards of information and link our own ideas to the collective shared cards. Not to mention, it can be as structured as you need it to be (linear or nonlinear) and soon, hopefully more features will be coming out for the team aspect (tasks, calendar, commenting, etc). Anyway, we are still building it out, but it has been super awesome so far and we are just getting started!

Out of scope question, what's your laptop brand and model?
Do you have any videos for backing up Obsidian? I believe you said you have it synced to Google drive? Is that a backup and do you have a place where it’s explained?
The paid version of Obsidian has syncing across devices and I think it might back up as well. Personally, I just every so often save all my Obsidian folders as a zip file and upload them to Google drive. Not the best option, but something at least. I don't have a video on this yet, no!
Thank you @@morganeua! I ended up doing the same thing. I sync it through my icloud and update a back-up to my google drive once a week. It's not been too difficult.
For visuals, especially since it can live sync through obsidian+zapier+google sheets, have you considered Kumu? I use it a lot for systems mapping, but have recently started connecting elements in my knowledge database, and now have a framework for a zettelkasten approach, but I am not actually doing any additional work, aside from design decisions based on connections/elements etc.
No, I've never even heard of Kumu! But it looks so beautiful, I'll have to look into it!

I love this, been looking for a note taking app like this tbh, i want to ask does it allow integration with notion or at least can i embed my board to notions because i have most of my notes on notion and I dont want to move them all to scrintal
Ah, very interesting question. I think they made the integration between obsidian and scrintal seamless because they expected people from obsidian to like this. But I don't know about notion. I also use Notion, so I can play around and see.
So, you can publish a Scrintal board, making it accessible to anyone that has the link. Then, you can post that link in your Notion and embed it if you want. But the embed doesn't look awesome. There might be another way, so I'll keep tinkering!

Seems a really cool tool. Actually I am looking for something to create a collabroative Zettelkasten. Wikis are limitied because its usually topic related and are not visual. As you mentioned for some people it is easier with visual representation.
I was interested in Scrintel before Obsidian Canvas, but find it gives me the infinite and physical canvas of "cards" which can convert to Obsidian notes.
Excellent explanation as per usual. Scrintal conceptually looks good. But there is one big flaw (unless I am mistaken, but I did check their site)); it is web based only and therefore needs an internet connection; there are no desktop/mobile apps for local storage of data. Another issue is the subscription model.
Yes, we-based, which is great for collaborating, but I do like that my Obsidian is TOTALLY offline for my own personal work - stuff that I actively DON'T want to share

Hello morganeua, thanks for the input on Scrintal. You could also make a video about Heptabase, which is the direct competitor of Scrintal. The other boards, like Obsidian and Logseq, are still in early development, you can't compare them to Scrintal or Heptabase. Personally I use Orgpad which is a board to create mind and concept maps, but I come from Obsidian and others (Logseq, Mem, Miro, etc.). I follow the progress of Scrintal and Heptabase, because I think that visual boards allow you to process your ideas better than in the format of a sheet (like Obsidian). From everything I've seen, I think Heptabase is more developed (it has many tools) but it's ugly. Scrintal is nicer than Heptabase, but has few tools (Heptabase is 1 year older than Scrintal). I plan to try both apps, but since they still have bug messages in their chats (eg problems loading boards with many cards), I prefer that they mature more to do so.
This is all great to know, thank you for sharing your experience! You definitely have a wider knowledge of note-taking apps than I do and I'll have to check out what Heptabase is doing differently. I actually hadn't heard of it til now
Scrintal and Heptabase are relatively similar, but Heptabase offers a huge advantage with its Mindmap feature.
This is something that many other applications (i.e., Margin Note), tried to accomplish, but none of them were able to deliver it like
Heptabase.
I recently started using Heptabase. Highlighting PDFs directly in the app and pulling these highlights onto a whiteboard is a significant advantage. Also, the tags in Heptabase are super-tags meaning you can add properties to all items associated with a given tag. Allows for another layer of filtering or classification. You should really check out Heptabase.

Obsidian has limited functionality when it comes to exporting a canvas. The only option is png. Does scrintal allow exporting a board to other formats?
That is a great question. From what I can tell, you can export a CARD to .md or to .pdf. But all I'm seeing for a board is an option to share a link to it, for instance here is a super random collection of cards I've got in a board: beta.scrintal.com/b/brainstorming-video--3ta2c
And important... Scrintel v Canvas (in Obsidian) would be useful.
Yes, totally. I've been using Obsidian Canvas A LOT to write papers and organize my thoughts in an improvised way. So, if Scrintal wants to collaborate again, I'll definitely put those two things side by side!

Am I right in thinking that you can do all of this using Obsidian canvas, for free, with the added functionality of infinite mods and local files rather than cloud files? Why would someone choose this over Obsidian? I feel like I might be missing something xd
I also prefer local files, but if someone wants to collaborate in an infinite canvas with an existing note database, Scrintal could be good. They'll also have a free tier when it's officially released

No, definitely not! I did copy all of my notes over to Scrintal, though, to see how it could handle the same info as I've got in Obsidian. I don' think I would switch fully to Scrintal myself because Obsidian suits me so well. But I think Scrintal could be better for some people!

No, not for my zettelkasten. However, I do find it very useful for projects where I don't know what the end product will be. Like, I use Obsidian for writing, but I use Scrintal now to create presentations, because I need something more visual. I'll have a video in about 2 weeks where I talk about the difference in how I use Scrintal and Obsidian!
Side note:
I use a couple different AI programs for productivity.
I wonder if i could use the visual notes of this program
and give the AI access to it.
AI is really good with data points,patterns and correlating things.

Sorry but this video just felt like a paid promotion! I was never comfortable with proprietary and cloud-based note-taking tools in the past. Obsidian has filled that gap very nicely. On the board front as well Obsidian now supports Canvas for creating visual boards.
No apology needed, it was paid! They didn't ask for promotion, but I do think for some people this app will be exactly what they were looking for. Personally, I also prefer for my knowledge management and research work to stay offline, so I will continue to work in Obsidian and have been really benefiting from Canvas.
