Former US President Donald Trump says he has rewrote a speech he plans to give at the Republican nominating convention for this year's presidential election after the attempt on his life. "The speech I planned to give on Thursday was supposed to be a smash hit," he told the Washington Examiner magazine in an interview, the contents of which were published on Sunday evening (local time).
At the party event in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he will instead be promoting a new effort aimed at national unity. People with different political views have contacted him. "This is an opportunity to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be very different, very different from two days ago," said the 78-year-old.
Shots were fired at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening (local time), and Republican presidential candidate Trump was hit in the ear by a bullet. One spectator was killed in the attack and two others were seriously injured. Secret Service agents killed the suspected shooter, whom the FBI identified as a 20-year-old from the Pittsburgh area. His motive is still unclear.
In the interview, Trump also addressed the moment the bullet hit his ear. He said he was saved from death because at the moment of the shot he turned his gaze away from the audience and looked at a screen that showed a graphic he had referred to in his speech. He is now becoming aware of this reality. "I rarely look away from the crowd. If I hadn't done that at that moment, we wouldn't be talking today, right?"
Trump's successor in the White House, President Joe Biden, warned of the dangers of politically motivated violence in a speech from the Oval Office on Sunday evening. It is time to calm tempers, he said on Sunday evening (local time). Political passions can flare up, but "we must never descend into violence," he said. "There is no place in America for this kind of violence - for any violence. Never. Period. No exceptions. We cannot allow this violence to be normalized."
