Thanks for this! I’m looking to get into Asimov after being recommended his Foundation series; it’s invaluable to watch this before I throw cash at a trilogy.

At around 1:32:00 the Discussion of "Jobless Economies" reminded me of "Player Piano" an early Kurt Vonnegut novel.

Thanks for yet another stimulating lecture,Dr. Sadler. Will there ever be a segment on one or more of the following: John Brunner, Stanislaws Lem, Larry Niven, Ray Bradbury or J.G. Ballard?
Isaac Asimov...one could devote an entire lecture to just his short stories alone. (*hint, hint*)

We'll see if we go for another year with the series there or not. If so, some of those authors will get into the mix, but there's many others I'd want to do as well

Dr. Sadler, another fine exploration of a great work of Science Fiction (apologies to Harlen Ellison) and Isaac Asimov. I am a huge fan of both. I could bury you in information about Asimov, but I won't. In the day since I commented on your Dune - Frank Herbert exploration I have discovered your deep knowledge of philosophy. My training is mostly in physics and astrophysics. Many scientists in this field feel that Philosophy is dead. For instance, what does philosophy have to say about quantum mechanics? I disagree with this.
Therefore I would like to share this panel discussion featuring Dr. Massimo Pigliucci, Dr. Daniel Dennett and Dr. Lawrence Krauss which covers this modern question. ua-cam.com/video/9tH3AnYyAI8/v-deo.html I am sure you are very busy but you might find this of interest. Best...

Hey Dr. Sadler , I've always been interested in philosophy and I want to get into now. I don't plan on going to school for this though I want to self educate. My question to you is where do I start? Do you recommend any of your videos and/or books? Or any useful advice to use towards my journey? Thanks.

Imagine fifty mathematicians who can't agree on what "+" means and every one of them has a different opinion. That's what Asimov's thought experiment was...What if we take sociology, one of the most interpretative(subjective) sciences out there and make it as solid as math?
Philosophy has the same problem. For example, I have heard many times people in the field using "Utilitarianism" when they should be using "Consequentialism".
I love Asimov, Le Guin, Herbert and the others in the series but if we add literature on top of poorly defined concepts the resulting philosophy is doubly murky. However, makes for fun casual discussion. Thumbs up :)

Well, I suppose philosophy looks a good bit more coherent from the inside, and after spending a few decades in the profession. That's my perspective

I have many encounters with SF in my life, most of this was not pleasant, because I will argue that hard SF is not about make someone think, but to give him ready answer important question, in my opinion bad answer. I read first four books of Asimov's fundation and in my opinion first three had quite clear word view put before reader to belive in it. God not exists and religion is not only false but also evil, Galaxy Empaires and story about cosmic sellers are example of that social progres (I guess this is it the Americas 50's version) are inseparetly linked with science and democracy, monarchies are imanently wiced and no have any regred in concuering them. But, what is distrubing at lest, this progress to great future is also inseparable linked with ''might make right'' approch to politics, in polish they proverb is something like this ''What is right, can not turn you from doing what is nesserary.'' Like murder of every meamber of truly rulling class of this advaenced society, when you can identified them. When I end wrtting this, its look worst when I began.
It is worth nothing, that I read substancial amount of works of only two great philosophers: Platon and Saint Augustine. I must said no one teach me more about conteporary word, and SF too, that these two autors. Outside science I don' see any sign of ages on they works, but when you look Asimove you see old science/attutiude of society too (like nuclears reactors everywhere), so we should forgive that these two great thinkers.

At the end the picture became very gloomy, but two things hold me from despair. For most God's Providence will never left mankind alone. Second, nothing is became outdated faster than yesterday vision of tomorrow. I don't say that people who said that were ignorant, but when you tray forsee future is always very hard job and no one should be much suprised when his vision fade away.
