I don't think that was Darrick's point. What he's saying is that Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote Alfie for Dionne to sing for the movie, but the movie studio wanted someone British to sing the title track. Hence, Cilla Black. But most of the songs Bacharach and David wrote back then were always songs for Dionne since she was the most successful interpreter of their music.
Ms.Warwick voice is smooth like butter but also it has power , I just absolutely love her tone and control
This woman knows how to interpret a lyric. She's a master. Many modern singers rely solely upon runs to interpret a song. IMO, mindless riffing, no matter how extravagant and deftly executed, will never be as moving as improvisations that are connected to the story you are telling. Learning to do runs without "running" away from the lyric is the key.

I don't want to go down a path of comparison because every artist brings something unique to the table but I'm not sure if its due to the family connection or studying Dionne from a young age but Whitney had a similar ability to really take a song/lyrics/melody to places that were necessary for the story to be told. Whitney and Dionne could if they wanted to take a song here there and everywhere, up down and in and out and display their incredible abilities but do it with the mindset of telling a story and that is the key to a great artist, leaving your ego at the door and doing what is necessary for the words and not your ego.

Jaron, I for one wouldnt pass up an opportunity to hear you singing. From even the exaggerated examples you give when highlighting vocalists techniques, your voice is still powerful and stunning. I love Dionne!!! Her voice and legacy are sooooo slept on these days. I would love to hear you analyze some Roberta Flack who I think is in the same class of non “traditional” r and b vocalists who really use control and dynamics in a unique way. I feel like they have a less “churchy” sound that is out the tradition of a Mahalia Jackson and the gospel and blues and r and b styles that she and other (gospel) singers influenced❤❤❤
This is also what I feel about Cynthia Erivo and Fantasia's "I'm Here" from The Color Purple. Cynthia's performance was "flawless" while you can feel the "humanity" in Fantasia's. Both perfect in their own ways.

ME TOO. Cynthia's version of "Im Here" is too perfect for me, but Fantasia gives it character, depth, rawness, and drama.
Hmm...that is one way of describing it. Cynthia's Alfie version was clearly about her being bigger in the moment because I think it was about showcasing and exalting another (tribute to Dionne). There are very obvious moments that Cynthia shows a subtlety and restraint that lets me know that she could also have taken this more subdue jazz approach. But she chose not to and it better fit the moment (award ceremony at the Kennedy Center). What we know from hearing both songs is CONTROL. Cynthia has is and so does Dionne. And both know how to use it to fit the moment.
She made the song personable and relatable. We connected with her in this video. She connected with us for as long as videos like this of her remain.
One of my favorite songs and one of my favorite performers singing this song in her best rendition. People forget that Dionne was that GIRL! ❤❤❤❤

Thank you for this analysis... These lyrics are really philosophical, dealing with the paths of life, so just belting it and making it extra pretty or disconnected would've been a disservice to it. Dionne is a Goddess and she gave us a conversation and a masterclass in control thats timeless.

Yeeeaaa... This song is a BEAST! It even gave Whitney a run for her money and she never really mastered it being the beast that she was.
But what I want to point out is how brave you have to be to live in those moments of softness and quietness. Maybe it's just me, even more than the cameras being all up in her face, to remain confident in such stripped down moments... that just gives me anxiety! Lol

I am so happy to see you analyze this particular performance. In my opinion, this is definitely Ms. Dionne's finest vocal performance. The top end of this song gives me strong "Whitney" vibes. Their ability to tell a story with subtle vocal nuances is unmatched #MASTERCLASS
You know what would be cool Jaron? If you did a break down of how the sounds or singing styles of different songs change based on the times.
You can tell that this rendition was a long time ago giving it a different sound (tone of that time) than when the same song is performed today. That could be a great video concept.

I saw this exact video when I was 18 years old and immediately learned how to play it on the piano. It became one of my favorites.
You did an honest analysis of both renditions....Cynthia and Miss Warwick. I heard Miss Warwick as a teenager and loved it....Cynthia made the song her own and I was right there enjoying the differences and her control. Thanks for this. Such beauty...the musicianship...professional on both counts.

this reminds me of I'm a Mean Ole Lion from The Wiz! I love how at the end his voice cracks during the big belt, he laughs, and then clears his throat at the end. I assume that was improv, but it still adds so much more character to the song for me. It really plays to his unserious nature as the Cowardly Lion which I appreciate immensely. That's a real skill to be able to use those accidents when you're in character, or in the moment like that.

Frankly, you addressed everything that I would indicate of the masterful skills of this legend ❤! I have always known Ms. Dionne voice to be extraordinary (I am not even from generation). I am singer and if you want to learn great singing study Ms. Dionne frfr!! That is what me, Whitney, Luther and so many other of her musical peers did. You will learn alot!! This lady is the master of all of the singers. Her singing is very deliberate and intentional. Nothing she sings is easy. She just makes it look and sound easy. Trust me, those vocal cracks were intentional as well. Ms. Dionne's voice can do just about anything!! I mean anything. She is one of a great kind!! She has sung this song millions of times and has done it beautifully different every time!!❤❤. I appreciate how you analyze Ms. Dionne more and more. She can easily hook you, lol.😊
And I mean ANYTHING! Dionne vocal range was huge not just in demonstration of how high or low she could sing but in terms of genres she can sing. Her solid gold covers solidified that. People tend to not really take notice to her unless you are a true student of the art but she always serve the song rather than display all her gifts in one setting like her contemporaries and thats what make her so unique. She is a textbook singer and can take you on a ride with her interpretive skills. Her knowledge of music theory makes her that much technical where she can sing un and out of the melody and it just makes sense. And Yes you can see her all over Luther and Whitney.

One of things about this song, and Jaron mentioned she let the song breathe. These songs were so well written and arranged that the singer didn't have to work overtime to get the emotion or feeling through. It was right there. It just needed her voice, and should could paint the picture with whatever colors she wanted. This is a class on interpreting a song. Whitney learned a lot from her.

I luv to watch various professional voice coaches start their analyses of Ms. Dionne - you can see that the coach starts off concerned & focused like "this is going to be serious work", but after just the first few notes of Ms. Dionne's vocalizations, they relax and realize they only have to enjoy how sublime she is - and then that enjoyment turns in to pure awe. Right? :-) thx so much! You're fabulous! :-)
PS: I also always am amazed by how Ms. Dionne uses a full stop pause of silence but then proceeds nonetheless flawlessly to the next absolute perfect pitch and note - and then, also, there's her articulation and expression of every work and nuance of a song's lyrics - she's a lyrical poetess, on top of everything else!!! I actually think of her as operatic.
I would say, Not so much Technical is always needed when singing! She's having a conversation with you..She's asking you a question "what's it all about? Alfie!?.....Is it just for the Moment we live? Sing as you speak speak as you sing - It's the content of the lyric and the expression of that lyric in it's purest intention.....a singer must be able to EXPRESS the lyric! and Dionne does it with ease another singer also is Nancy Wilson - Listen to how they express the lyrics of any song....
But she's being technical though, it just doesn't show much because she's making it look easy lol. Singing quietly and high requires so much control and precision. But yeah you're right, her ability to convey a story is spectacular.

That’s the big glaring thing missing from the analysis offered above: lyric interpretation! All the vocal instruction and technique in the world doesn’t produce a performance like Dionne’s.
Because she started out singing professionally doing background work, she developed excellent technical skills. (And prior to that, her family singalongs and steady church choir and gospel singing.)
So she had “chops”, she had an “ear”, and the kind of vocal mastery that comes from singing DAILY since toddler days.
But… Dionne’s true excellence as a PERFORMER in this video of “Alfie” is about her ability with lyrics, and the storytelling. She is not just producing a series of random (albeit sublime) sounds. Like the great singers she herself admired (Lena Horne and Sinatra among them), she was invested in phrasing - singing THOUGHTS, not just NOTES. It’s not always about HOW you sing a note or phrase, but more importantly, WHY.
The voice teacher is so focused on the HOW, he is seemingly unable to figure out why he is so transported by her singing, and it’s because she is conveying a MESSAGE with Hal’s lyrics. This performance was from a TV special in the mid-1970s, when Dionne’s marriage broke up. She had already recorded the song about 7 or 8 years earlier, so it was already a “part of her”… but now, she had a personal story behind it, and a REASON to sing it.
Great singing isn’t just about producing sounds - it’s about taking control of those sounds to EXPRESS something.
And this version of “Alfie” - and her equally sublime “All in Love is Fair” from around the same time period - demonstrate the exquisite results of VOCAL TECHNIQUE married to SUBTEXT (acting the lyric). Her technical facility allows her to go wherever she spontaneously wants to go IN THE MOMENT. And she famously never sings her songs the same way twice.

One really isn't thinking technique while in the act of singing..unless your performing Carmen on stage than you must think about tone placement singing on the vowels with breath support.....but a singer like Dionne Warwick singing the music she sings supporting her voice...she's thinking about her approach rather than the technically correct way of singing while in the act.....like you've elegantly stated, her gospel roots is her foundation ...
Dionne is the original Soundtrack singer! You should review more of her gems, especially from the 60s ranging from 65-67… Here I Am, Inbetween the Heartaches, Here Where There Is Love (original studio long mix), etc.

That was a really stunning performance by Duonne Warwick, and very different from the version she released as a single. She tookber own pop song and turmrd into an arg song. She made ud think about the narrator of the song, the woman who has possibly been on the receiving end of Alfie's philandering ways. Rather than some otacular _deus ex machina_ giving our libertine a good tslking to, this is more like a prayer, of a woman whohas been hurt, but understands that Alfie is the one who is really losing out. She hopes he might vhange, but she can only do so from a disrance, because by this stage of sny relationship, Alfife has somehow always disappeared and is unavailable ...
So the little pops and crackles when dhe is singing just on theedge of phonation are very much a part of the story and the characters involved.
It is probably only possible to do this very interior reading of the song if you do have two cameras right clise up to your face! I'm sure Dionne was happy for Cynthia to give a more conventional interpretation innthe contect of a Kenbedy Centre Honours performance. Nevertheless, this was a very compelling version that we are lucky to be able to experience. Thank you for bringing it to is, Jaroon! Dont be afraid to show us your humanity - we see it every time you fo one of these breakdowns! You clearly also have a wonderful voice of your own, and a while lot of soul.

Thanks for talking about how our voices are human voices and they do human voice things! I get ashamed of my voice also because I don't really know if I'm a soprano or alto. People have told me different things, and I try them both and feel I'm somewhere in between because I'm not sure if the perimeters of my range sound good. Like I can hit high notes, but do they sound good to other people?? I have no idea lol and my voice cracks on any key, just depends on if it comes out round or raspy... #confused lol

The more i listen to Dionne, I realise how many of my idols she inspired. The strongest i hear is in Whitney.
She was the favorite of so many legends in the industry. Whitney, Luther, Olivia Newton-John, Angela Bofill, Barry Manilow, Barry Gibb, Cheryl Lynn and even the legendary guitarist, Carlos Santana. He said he developed his distinct guitar sound by imitating Dionne's phrasing. She was the blueprint.
