I was 17 years old in 1987, when I joined the Army National Guard, still in high school. I turned in my History book, and the teacher asked me, where are you going? I said I joined the Army. I was a proud Infantryman in NYC…lol. You won’t find that anymore… In 1989, we got this new boot in the unit, and all he talked about was going Ranger, and in 6 months I was active duty Army with an Airborne contract to Benning. I volunteered for the Ranger Regt while in Airborne school, and they accepted me. I had a Black Beret by November 1989….. December 20th on a plane to Panama. The rest of my career I was living the dream. Retired from 3SFG in 2015. My body regrets it, but my heart doesn’t. I don’t like to give advice anymore about joining the military,because I did that for a friend, and their son hated it and it made me feel bad. You will not have the same experiences as I, or any other person. My only advice is to get in the best shape of your life, no matter what MOS they give you. Being in top shape in any unit helps out tremendously, and if you constantly get 300’s on your PT test, and any schools or promotions boards pop up in leadership meetings, your name is the first to be turned in, because you have personal responsibility to be in better shape than what regular physical training can get you in.
Hey Mikey: was going thru Ranger School, Florida phase in November. Remember being locked down while you guys trained on our airfield at Elgin afb. I am envious. Wish I could have jumped with you.

I was supposed to jump in and jump start crap that may be blocking the runway…..last minute, I’m driving a Hummer filled with grenades off the back of a c130. In order to get Airborne on my active duty contract I had to change my MOS from 11B to 63B mechanic. You believe that? I was already an 11B, but they couldn’t give me Airborne on my contract, I wanted Airborne so bad I would have taken Cook……And while in Airborne school, the in house Ranger recruiter made announcements every day at final formation….. “We need volunteers for the Ranger Regiment……..The Regiment just happened to need mechanics. Over the next 12 years I changed my MOS two more times, then finally found one I liked…..18E. That’s my thing to people….. change your job skill as much as you can….i used two of my prior MOS’ while I was in group….during FID in Kuwait, I taught their Military Police convoy escort, and I kept our vehicles in top shape in Afghanistan. Use your prior experiences….something that 18X’s may or may not have. I will tell you what most of them (18x) don’t have…..bad habits.

At the time HS students like myself, would do Basic Training during the summer, then finish HS when it starts up in the Fall. You will have to talk to a recruiter now. Plus, at 17 I had to get a parent to sign a waiver for me.
1:28:39 Imagine how much more useful that training would be for regular infantry guys or National Guard guys. In the Guard in 05 we got a 3 month course and told, good luck. A lot of Headquarter guys and gals have purple hearts now from simply little to no training. How many more Jessica Lynch's do we need to have before we take training for all troops seriously? Nothing against police, but once it gets to big for them, they call the National Guard in.

Fact of the matter is. If generation C is screwed up. That means Generation A & B totally failed them and the responsibility sits squarely on generation A & B. I’m ashamed My generation went around complaining and telling war stories, and how bad combat is. to the point the generation today is like “Hell I’m not joining the military to become cannon fodder and die for a war we will ultimately lose or surrender”. -- honestly having low recruiting numbers is what the leadership needs to wake them up. Our nuclear ICBM is what keeps our country safe at night. So we will be perfectly fine to be short some dudes.
I think one of the saddest things. The United States desperately needs SF ODAs. That unconventional warfare is a skill nobody else can do. So ive always split the units in Two main baskets. Delta/Devgru/Seals/75th Ranger/PJ/CCT/Raiders literally I could take any one of those units and send them to do a hostage rescue and it will get done at a good enough level. (Yes arrogant primadonnas will think different. But that’s just your emotion) Green berets special forces on the other hand are the only ones that are truly qualified to do unconventional warfare. R-sage. The sad part is that SF CIF was one of the most destructive things from a strategic standpoint . We got plenty of door kickers and self proclaimed ninjas. What We needed Was SF to be SF unconventional warfare. Because I can tell you. Seals, Rangers, Devgru, delta those guys bitch and moan 24/7 if you make them babysit locals or take them on hits.
Can you please talk about the morality of the USAs wars. Specifically killing people in the name of doing cool guy shit. Idk if we’re hunting down evil people all of the time. How many innocent farmers protecting their land has the US travelled across the sea to murder. How many infantry man and sof guys killed someone they’ve had to think about for 20 years after hoping god will forgive them. I love being American but am I joining just to be a pawn stacking kills or dying leaving my family for an oil war or to make weapon manufacturers a few more millions? I understand we want to fight our wars on their land but idk if we can justify it. Being SF is the only job I thought I wouldn’t care how much I made in my career I think I’d be fulfilled. Every other job I’ve looked into has been 100% about money. I struggle wrestling with whether or not America still holds the moral high ground in the world. Thank you for your service sir.

I’ve talked to a former Army SF guy in person about these concerns and he agreed with these points and even further enlightened me on these exact points. He went as far as to say he would at the least wait for an administration change before enlisting which at the time was still on the table for me. Being a basic infantryman would mean you do the same stuff with less training and tools at your disposal so has nothing to do with making it or not but the moral issues of the wars we fight. We’ve not been fighting for the freedom of our people. We’ve been making billionaires involved in the military industrial complex rich and laundering money to our politicians. You can stay blind and kill people in the name of doing cool guy shit but it’s you who has to live with that. I’d be joining to sacrifice myself for the greater good of our people and that wouldn’t be the case in a multitude of these wars we’ve been involved in and are about to get involved in.
On the Dalton Fischer Podcast, Brent does talk about the morality of the US military. I don’t mean to try to paraphrase his words, but long story short he believes we’re a highly moral military. If you’re actually interested, I think that episode is a really good listen all around.
