  • Shmuel (Shmulik) Shilo was born in Lutsk, Poland, to a Zionist family. In August 1942, in the midst of World War II, most of the Jews of Lutsk were murdered. Shmuel managed to escape, hiding for several months with a Polish family. Upon returning to Lutsk, he reunited with his brother, and from there the two were taken to a Nazi labor camp. In December the camp workers were to be murdered, and in the ensuing uprising Shilo's brother was killed. Shmuel escaped to the forests, hiding with the partisans. In 1944, following the liberation of the area by the Red Army, he managed to locate his sister, and took part in a Zionist preparatory program in Selvino, Italy. In 1946, he immigrated to pre-state Israel on the Catriel Yaffe immigrant ship, and was a founding member of the Mishmar
HaSharon Kibbutz. During the Israeli War of Independence, he fought as a member of the Palmach. Following the war, he was a founding member of the Tze'elim Kibbutz.
Over the years Shilo was a member of Habimah, Israel's national theater, as well as an early member of the HaKibbutz and Be'er Sheva theater groups. In 1983 he founded the HaNegev theater group, serving as its general manager and artistic director. Shilo took part in many plays, films, and television programs, including Romeo and Juliet, Fiddler on the Roof, Noa is Seventeen, Stalin's Disciples, Sesame Street, and Prisoners of War.
