grade 8 Hopekirk Air (No.3 from Suite) ABRSM

Helen Hopekirk (1856-1945) wrote this Air as part of a piano Suite which dates from 1917. It is set for ABRSM grade 8 and it may be the most approachable of the 'B' pieces in the standard grade book for the younger pianist to comprehend, both musically and technically. Here I play faster than the suggested marking due to my own feelings about the meaning of 'Andante con moto' and the musical content. There is no correct tempo just as there is no continuously correct tempo in a piece of this era. It would have been enjoyed by pianists steeped in a late 19th-century era of tempo sensitivity and rubato where musical time could ebb and flow according to the feelings and mood of the player.
