My brother is 18 and autistic and has been bullied so many times throughout his whole life during school. He would beg every morning to not go. The school was notified about it and they did NOTHING. They straight up told my mom that “he needs to grow thicker skin” and “bullying is a part of life”. He is also allergic to many things and has sensory issues, and kids knew that, so they took it upon themselves to throw a bag of Cheetos in his face (he is deathly allergic to dairy) and my mom wanted to press charges because that’s basically attempted murder. And you know what the school did? Nothing. It makes me sick to my stomach that people think it’s okay to do this shit. I am so sorry if anyone has ever experienced this type of situation. The Paralympics thing is awful.
Not taking their accomplishments seriously or with even a shred of the respect able-bodied people get when, if anything, they should be given even more respect for being capable of feats more grand than anything that was expected of them.
The treatment of disabled people, whether visible or nonvisible is so gross to me.
I see my sister, whose Amblyopia (the more proper term for a 'lazy eye') is ridiculed even by those related to us. She says "sorry" when her eye drifts, and feels bad about it. Her physical difference is something she feels the need to apologize for and it breaks my heart. I cannot fathom the pain others with more distinct differences must go through simply to feel comfortable existing.
I see autistic people like myself being treated as overgrown children who need to be "put in their place". People act like I don't have a brain, since it functions differently from theirs, (to which I'd argue that my brain is better anyway, because I'm not an ableist jerkass who can't accept that the existance of a percieved majority doesn't set the baseline for how humanity "should be".)

@@Schizohandlers what I will say is, personally, I get telling someone that they sound rude or stuff like that - even if it’s done rudely (because, from their perspective, someone’s just been unnecessarily rude to them). But, a lot of the bullying of autistic people isn’t about bluntness or rudeness, a lot of the time it’s because of things like stimming (particularly vocal stims and more obvious physical stims like hand flapping), or special interests, or just a sense that there’s something *different* about the person.
Like, while there are plenty of rude autistic people (both intentionally and unintentionally), I vividly remember back when I was like 12 and newly diagnosed, my school did an autism awareness day. For the rest of the week people would over and over again just get in people’s faces say “shutdown or meltdown!! Shutdown or meltdown!!” in this annoying baby voice. I remember being terrified that it would happen to me and I’d accidentally yell in someone’s face over it. Sure, that wasn’t me being bullied, but it was an example of kids being taught about autism and immediately using it to mock people.

my little brother has down syndrome. he’s pretty young, only in 5th grade and he is treated fairly well at his school. they keep him in the special ed room most of the day though and don’t really have him around other kids, but from what i can tell the other kids treat him as an equal and it makes me so happy. however, i’m scared it won’t be like that once he advances to bigger schools that it won’t be like that as much. we had to move him from his old elementary school because the paras (the aids for the special needs classroom) were horrible. they didn’t make sure he was fed and they wouldn’t actually teach him. it was like they thought he was brain dead and couldn’t think or feel any emotion. Needless to say, yes, people treat anyone with some form of disability badly.

This needs to be talked about it more. It's horrifying. I'm autistic and the amount of times I've heard people talk like this so casually about disabled people is so painful. It's gotten to the point where the 10 year olds at the summer camp I volunteer for are making fun of autistic people and don't see what's wrong with it. 10 YEAR OLDS. Don't even get me started on how much I hear the r word used, or "acoustic (even from people who I considered friends)." People think that just because I don't "look autistic" that it won't offend me. I'm sick of it. When did the internet decide that disabled people are less than and therefore okay to make fun of??? 12:15 random fact: an occurrence where the victim is being blamed or punished for the attack is called victim blaming! it commonly happens in SA/r@pe scenarios and is described as: “[putting] the responsibility of a crime, trauma, or hardship on the victim and not the perpetrator.” this is what tiktok has done by limiting viewing of disabled people in order to “stop bullying” instead of actually filtering comment sections to not send horrendous comments like i know they can do, as seen in ‘privacy settings’: ‘comments’: ‘filter spam & offensive comments’ or ‘filter keywords.’ so the fact that tiktok refuses to do so even though they can is just terrible. Originally, the joke was "weird incel who's entitled, sexist, lives in their parents basement, yada yada yada" but over time its evolved into just laughing at people who are socially inept, behave "strangely" or like things "too much" (be it minecraft or anime or whatever else people deem cringe). And whenever a disabled person gets hurt by these videos or points out that the so called "weirdo characteristics" displayed in the skits are just making fun of neurodivergent traits, they get called a snowflake or whatever...

I am still in school and most of my classes consist of people who weren’t raised properly and are tiktok addicts. They are homophobic, transphobic, and extremely ableist, nor do they have any shame voicing these things. One time I was forced to next to them during a class. I have faced a lot of bullying being an autistic queer person, but this was the first time I have ever been surrounded by people openly talking about how people like me would be better off dead. It genuinely scares me, not because they’d rather have me dead, but because I am so desensitized to it. I just have to accept that these people don’t like me because of things I can’t control and would rather have me dead. I can’t do anything about it. My teachers won’t do anything, these people don’t wanna be educated, I will be outed if I speak up, and the way people treat me will only decline.

I have been reading a book out loud, and people would whisper underneath my voice to trigger me. People have sent me death threats for talking about normalized ableism (they were reported dw).
I feel like we should give typical people a "disabled experience." Like having people with all their limbs have to tie one to their back, or people who can see a pair of glasses that make their vision blurry; or even handing neurotypical people a paper with jumbled letters/smeared letters and ask them to solve what the nonsense is asking. That was a genuine dream of mine to do- to have typicals experience simulations of what various disabilities do to their bearer.

    my drama:
I’ve had a best friend for the past 3-4 years, and she has some mental health issues because of her personal life. I’ve always done as much as I can to support her through this, listening to her rants every single morning about whatever happened last night at her home. I always understood how difficult it was for her, but at the same time, that constant negativity was bringing me down and making me feel miserable. After a while, I just didn’t want to talk to her as much since every single conversation was about her and her issues.
The friendship felt one sided and I was rarely happy when hanging out with her.
So, I started hanging out with two other friends a little more. I didn’t ditch her, we still have lunch together at school and hang out as a friend group, but I’ve been more distant for the sake of my own mental health.
Now, one of my other friends earlier this week said that she had been talking bad about me, saying how I was ‘such a bad friend’ for not hanging out with her as much, and how she has been struggling recently without someone to talk to?! I dislike how all the responsibility is on me to support her through what she’s going through. This is our last year of high school and we’re going to different colleges, so it was inevitable that we would grow apart anyway, but I don’t think she understands this or the fact that I was struggling with how she was acting in our friendship.
    Opinions on this?
