My 1996 PC had 48MB RAM. Windows 95 ran beautifully on it.
Before anyone thinks I was stinking rich, I had this machine around eight years later, when a local school wanted to get rid of a number of old classroom PCs. I was allowed to pick what I wanted, so I combined half a dozen more or less working old PCs into one machine. The 100MHz 486 made it a fun retro machine, as DOSBox ran terribly on the PC I had at the time. No USB though, which forced me to either burn games to CD or use floppy disks. Running through the house back and forth with floppies turned out to be a good workout.

The text in the Brazilian shareware catalogue says:
    "Try your Ford model
How about driving a Ford car without leaving the computer? Interested? Then take the opportunity with Ford Test Driver II, a more recent version of Ford Simulator, already reviewed in MS.
Beyond driving one of the 16 models available in the USA, you can also check out the performance of the automobiles in the shopping demo, where every car details are shown.
The forte of this software is marketing the manufacturer, in the detailing and animation of the most modern technical aspects of the cars.
Compatible with CGA, EGA and VGA, it uses few graphical resources from the EGA/VGA cards, which is unforgivable in a software like this. It is worth it more for the curiosity than its games."
I'm not sure why I took the time to translate it, but I did anyway. Great video as always, Clint!

I commuted every day for over a year with three other guys in a white and gold two tone Aerostar back in '05-'06. It hit 400000 miles without much trouble. I think fuel costs put it into early retirement. I've owned a few Ford products from this era and have nothing too bad to say about them.

In 1996, I graduated from college with my Computer Science degree. The day after I graduated, I took off on a trip with a friend. We got to our destination (it was a business trip for my friend), and proceeded to the car rental counter at the airport. I remember picking up a brand new purple 1996 Ford Escort sedan that was so new it still had temporary tags on it. In the glove compartment was a VHS tape that was a new car owner's guide. My buddy absconded with the VHS video. Kudos to Ford for being up on current technology and media back then...

Kids, back when we only had 1 or 2 megabytes of video memory, we often had to get by with 256 colours on the desktop. Even for full-motion video and photos, which gave results that looked like this. And we thought that it looked GOOD. Seeing that dithering now brings forward an odd blend of nostalgia and cringing; I used to wait twenty minutes to get a postage-stamp sized video (in glorious 256-colour Quicktime format) that showed a preview of the next week's episode of Star Trek: DS9 or Voyager. The video quality was nowhere near as good as this CD-ROM was, but I still thought it was wonderful and glorious!

I'm quite aware that it was factually flawed. And yet it catalysed an important debate that might have saved some lives and left a cultural and historic impact. I don't have an opinion on the personality of the author and I think it's not so important - many good books were written by bastards and bad ones by good people.

Hey! I just wanted to say thanks for you sticking to making videos for so long. I started watching you in 2011 at eleven years old when I first got Sims 3 for my birthday and instantly fell in love with your Sims reviews. The humour and the format resonated with me so well, and even though my english was non-existent at the time I still watched them and eventually learnt english through your videos. I have been following you ever since and every time I see a video in the subscription box I always watch it. I like that you always find ways to make mundane things such as making sandwiches (on your second channel) interesting and fun to watch.
Watching you grow over the years has been a joy and I aspire to do something similar in the future (at least try hah). I really just wanted to say thanks for the awesome videos! Keep up the good work! :)

CD-ROM's full of videos like this sooner or later will become a point of agonizing explanation to the younger generation born into this current world of high-speed internet video streaming and on-demand services. There should be wings set up in libraries or museums with mid-90s PCs and a selection of things to run from floppy or CD-ROM so people can sit their kids down at them and say "GO AHEAD, TRY AND DO SOMETHING." Just sit back and watch the comedy ensue.

LGR, I live in Brazil, and I don't know why, but this version was widely distributed here, through those magazines that came with a cdrom.

  • @GameOverRobsonB
    @GameOverRobsonB 4 роки тому

Since I'm brazilian, I had to pause and read about...the magazine talk about shareware and the text talks about "What's about to drive a Ford without get out your PC?", there's 16 cars that you could drive in USA and see details about each one. It talks about the Ford showroom, but it uses few the VGA mode and thats unforgivable. It's more about curiosity than play (drive, I guess) it.
Well LGR, that's unexpected... but, well, love it too since I love cars and oldies! :D

At 1:05 the description translated from Pt-br for those who care: "Experience your Ford Model. What about to drive a Ford car without leaving the PC? Interested? So enjoy this opportunity with Ford Test Driver 2, an updated version of the current Ford Simulator, already analysed in MS(not sure what is MS in this case!). Beyond driving one of the 16 models available in USA. you can also observe the performance of the automobiles in the showroom, where every car detailed is showed. The highlights of this software is the marketing of the maker, in the details and the top notch animations of the technical characteristics of the cars. Compatible with CGA, EGA and VGA, it uses few graphical resources of the EGA and VGA cards, witch is unforgiven in a software like this. It is worth more for the curiosity than for the game itself."
Im a native Pt-Br speaker, but not an english native speaker, so sorry for any mistakes! :P

In the late 90s I owned a Ford Aspire - it was a ton of fun and hilariously unstoppable, mostly due to being so bare bones. I took appallingly poor care of it, at least at first as it was my first car and I didn't know any better. I didn't change the oil for at least a year after I bought it. It only survived because oil leaked out of it constantly, forcing me to top it off.
It was so light, it never got stuck in snow and used every minor unevenness in the road as a ramp. Repairing it was easy and fun as there really wasn't much to repair.
I drove the damn thing to hell and back, putting over 200k on it without any major repairs, then sold it to a friend for $300, who drove it for another year before destroying it through some more of that "this is my first car" negligence.
Man... one of these days I might try to get myself another Aspire just for fun, before they are all junked.

The driving simulator portion's production value still holds up today. Just add a narrator reciting an unrelated story about someone's mother dying of cancer, and you've got a 2018 indie GOTY contender.
