- Professional restorer Rodney Keyser demonstrates this "How to" tutorial on a unique technique we use on an antique wardrobe to beautifully refinish it without stripping or sanding in under an hour.
NOTE** Howard Products (colored) Citrus Shield Paste Wax has been discontinued -
We suggest using Briwax in place of the Howard wax:
Briwax Original Dark Brown Furniture Wax - amzn.to/34Ji34Q
Howard Products Orange Oil - amzn.to/3bQwhmO
Howard Products Feed n Wax - amzn.to/3aNKako
0000 Steel Wool - amzn.to/2VMpAMY

Wanted to tell you Rodney that my daughter and I used your technique on an extremely beat up family heirloom 120 year old piano. It looks amazing! Thank you so much.
Beautiful finish, mate. Nothing like old wood.
astounding! I love Howards Products. They make life a lot simpler. Almost as if by magic. I love demonstrating to my grandchildren how marks are erased with their steel and wax method. They love it.
We've been doing a lot of refinishing lately and frankly just didn't want to go through all the hassle of stripping and sanding five chairs that we're already reaphoulstering. This method is just what I was looking for, thanks!
Really beautiful results. I'm sure the clients were thrilled. Thanks for the demonstration.
Hi
Your idea of wood repair and fix is nice. He came back to life. It's nice to create and share a variety of ideas to help many people. Congratulations...
thank you for sharing. I wish you healthy and happy days. Greetings.
Thank You !!!
@@FurnitureRefinishingStudio 😊👏👏
Thanks for this video. I wanted to freshen up the 1920’s bedroom set I have but most videos I see show u how to totally restore it and I like the “character “ it has just give it a good facial. Blend the bumps and scratches not take them away. Great video!
I DO RESTORATION WORK AS WELL, AND I MUST SAY THIS IS EXCELLENT AND BEAUTIFUL I REALLY ENJOY THE VIDEO. CHARLES
Love this! I have never refinished anything yet but this video has answered my questions without spending lots of time and energy learning that I went about my projects all wrong. I don't want new looking pieces. I want antique looking pieces!
I'm so glad!
This is beautiful and great info! A couple of questions... How long did you leave the paste wax on before you applied the orange oil? Did you allow the orange oil to sit a bit before moving forward with step #3? What type of cloth did you use when applying and wiping? Thank you!
Howards has a product called wax-it-all. Same exact ingredients as in feed n wax only more wax than oil. Good for already sealed wood where as feed n wax is good for bare wood as it soaks in more readily. But no color in wax-it-all. Ty. Great job. Ive been restoring old guitars with feed n wax. Wish it had more carnauba in it for a deeper shine.
I love this video the most out of all videos. This is exactly what I wanted to know. Looks gorgeous 😍
What a transformation! 👏👏👏
WOW BEAUTIFUL !!!!!
Your video is good, however if you would like some feedback for improvement.. lose the the music! Two reasons, people who have a hearing problem cannot hear what you have to say. Second, if we want music we can get exactly what we want anywhere on the Internet. Please stick to the subject of the restoration. Thank you for all the information you shared.
This may bridge me over to a full strip and finish for a few years time. (Once I regain, the time and space :) Great content in your videos and the video production quality is very good too.
Beautiful!! I’m going to attempt this process on a hutch that was my aunts.
How'd it go? Buying a hutch tuesday lol
I can't press LIKE enough..OMG.........I just got a tired looking old wooden table model radio and I will give it a face-lift....WOW!!
Thank you. Great video. Sometimes less is certainly more. Best regards.
Thank you too!
wow it looks so nice after and good that no need to strip! I wonder for higher traffic area say coffee table or dresser top, will this be durable enough? Can I put a topcoat over this? Thanks very much
Hi Rodney. I’m in Australia and just came across your excellent video about refinishing timber without stripping it. I have a pedestal desk which probably dates back to about the 1920’s. It is basically in good condition but obviously a bit tired. Briwax seems to be unavailable for us here. I would be extremely grateful if you could suggest another dark brown paste wax or similar. Best wishes Kate.
I love this. Wondering how long it lasts.
Beautiful. Ive a couple pieces that I am excited to try this on. Thank you!
Just bought an Antique Victrola Phonograph and it needs some help My husband advised me no to strip it and refinish it so I was looking at my options Thank you.
Great work👍, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Im in the process of re-upholstering a victorian loveseat and now im thinking of adopting this method to darken up the wood on it while im at it:) Very helpful video🍁
Lovely result
Two things are on my mind: consider not using the music. I’m likely not your only fan with an auditory figure ground problem. (My hearing is excellent but it’s very challenging to “pull out” speech from backgrounds.
Second: I’m allergic to fragrances. Are there any alternatives to the orange/lemon oils?
Thanks for an interesting video. New subscriber and like button tapper. Cheers
Can u place the shield wax over a glossy varnish or top coat? I absolutely love how you put life back into such an old piece. Thank you to anyone who knows.
Yes you can, and thank You !!
Thanks I needed to learn this. I'll be working on a dresser this weekend. Also....maybe less music? It was distracting.
You're welcome and noted on the music. We have made it a priority point for our future videos.
What was your wait time before removing the paste wax with the Orange Oil? I thought the usual step would be to use the Orange Oil first to get surface dust and dirt off before applying any wax. I just did a very dry antique spindle back chair that I hadn’t touched since the mid 1970’s. Used Golden Oak Restor-A-Finish with 0000 steel wool. Let that off gas over night then applied a LOT of Feed-N-Wax and let that soak in over night. When I wiped that off it was almost the color of dark oak, beautiful.
Loved it but pls reduce the music volume ! :)
Okay, thanks for the suggestion !
Yes, I couldn’t concentrate!
@@tamaraspink4201 We have made this a priority point for future videos, just can't do anything about previously made vids like this one. Thanks for the suggestions !!
@@FurnitureRefinishingStudio 👍🏼 Really enjoyed the video though, thank you!
Turn on cc (closed caption) found in upper right corner. Then turn volume way down. Works for me!
I have a question about this. After this is finished, does the oils leave the surface feeling greasy? Is it safe to lay doilies and other cloths on without their picking up the stains in the wax, oil residues, etc. ?
Looks great, but I believe Howards only sells Neutral colored wax now. I will be using your technique soon, but probably using BriWax for the first step.
Well how about that, Howard discontinued the colored wax. Other company's carry it, no worries :-) Thanks for the heads up !!
@@FurnitureRefinishingStudio As promised...I used your process. The project turned out beautiful and the customer loves it. It looks aged, but very clean. Thanks for the insights!
Excellent !! Glad to hear and thank you for reporting back.
@@FurnitureRefinishingStudio what other companies colored wax would you recommend? Thanks!
Hello, can I try this on oak kitchen cabinets?
Awesome video!! Just what i needed. .. But question, will this pieces help with minor scratches?
Do you use a top coat? And how often would you have to reaax it since wax wears off?
How long does the finish look last?
Hi, what a brilliant demonstration! I have a couple of (100yr old) wood interior doors which was refinished 5 years ago in shellac with lacquer on top. Cracks have since developed; with the expansion and contraction of the wood which lacquer does not hold up well to. Wondering if I could just try the technique you've shown; without having to first remove the lacquer?
Yes, Absolutely !!
Thanks for vdo. I am wondering if you can give me some advise. We have weather front door with a lot of sun weathered so part that not protect by storm door were dried. We used sunsheild from Howard and it does look better. However, we can’t bring the shine back like the other part where we polyurethane in the past. So any recommendation for product to use on top of sunsheild wax?
My daughter has an old secretary that I really don't want to strip and refinish. This looks like a great option (also considering using Poly wipe). Can this method be used no matter what finish currently exists on the piece? I am not sure what finish is on there now. Thanks for the great video.
Do you not need to sand the piece before you start this process?
Great job
Thank You !
Clean before wax? Bumping this comment about cleaning, which has been asked several times now with no attempt to answer. What product would you recommend to CLEAN the wood first. Something that will remove the accumulated decades of grunge WITHOUT harming the original finish. Answer pretty please? Thanks! 🙏
Does the finish come off with daily use? If so is there anything that would seal the finish retain the sheen?
Wax finishes may require a fresh coat of wax eventually, depending on how it's used.
The good thing about wax, other than how it looks and it's conditioning if the wood and stuff, is it's so much easier to touch up than varnish. You can just wipe down and apply. The other you'd have to sand and apply, maybe a few coats, deal with imperfections, and let it dry a few days. Wax takes about 3 days to dry, but can usually be applied in the house and only to a small area, if need be.
Great video. I'm going to try this technique on my 1930's German, marble-top nightstand. What about worn oak floors. Would the same process work?
I have a buffet that is well over 100 years old and in beautiful condition but I am wanting to remove a bit of the orange color from it and i started in a small spot using the briwax in dark brown and it really makes a difference but wondering if I would be able to follow that up with step 2 and 3 that you demonstrated in your video do you think the 2 different products would work together to give the shine and protection? Yours was beautiful!
paper towel will miss a lot of wax built up in the corners and crevices. a horsehair shoe shine brush or something similar will help with that.
Very helpful! I plan on doing my kitchen table. Is there a certain amount of time for drying between applications?
I know it's been 3 months, but even if it's just another setting this, I think no matter what he used here, a kitchen table needs to be food safe and also gets a lot more wear. You can put certain toxic products on that harden though, like polyurethane. But there's also hemp oil, yet I don't think it hardens as much, and many waxes (check to make sure they're food safe), that come closer to hardening as much. I like them better still, and you can also really wax and oil without having to sand the while thing down. As for these oils, at least the orange and beeswax sounds safe, but even that could have something else added. I love oils and waxes, but in a table you want to make sure it's safe is all.
Sorry I can't say more as to your actual question, but I do think he didn't wait, just did one after another.
Maybe try a sample somewhere first? Anyhow, good luck!
This video is exactly what I've been looking for. I have a question about a piece of furniture that I have please. It's a mid century Asian coffee table. I love the wood grain and the color, it looks like maybe walnut. The only thing that bothers me is the finish. It's a glossy top coat. Would I be able to knock that off with some fine grit sandpaper, go over it with the products you've used here and get that beautiful patina and glow this piece came out with? If so what color paste wax would you recommend? I don't want it too black. I like the warmth that's in the wood now? Thank you so so much if you can respond to my question. Donna
I've also seen where people melt paste wax in boiling water and add stain for color
Glad to see this. I use a Haywood Wakefield chair at my vanity everyday. I am not at all interested in trying to refinish, but because of the maker I don't want to paint it. I just cleaned it up, but I used a wood cleaner then used the feed and wax.
Question….why didn’t you scrub the piece clean before applying the wax??
I have a wardrobe that has some really bad cracked shellac. I was told that I'd have to strip it down completely. Will this process work for this? I really don't want to go through the stripping process.
Nice
Beautiful!! Would you recommend this process for antique mid century walnut piece?
Hi I have an old imbuia lounge set. Can I try your technique? Want to restore it. Imbuia is dark wood, so what bees wax should I use. Please advise. Thanks from South Africa.
Thanks much for this video! I've saved it so I can refer back to it in the future and have subscribed to your channel for more tips. Currently I have some very old bent wood dinning chairs. The top and arms were black with dirt & grim. Unfortunately those areas were cleaned with water & dish soap :( so the finish came off. Could the same technique used in your video still work on the bar wood and the wood that still has some stain & finish? I don't have the space, experience or confidence to totally strip all 4 chairs. Thank much & hope to get a reply.
This is great. Would you recommend this technique for surfaces like a desktop? Just wondering how prone these materials would be to rubbing off on clothes, papers, etc.
I’m also curious as to the answer to this question! Got a small secretary I’m wanting to spruce up!
@@beritbunny We refinished an old wooden church pew (bench) using this method. And we do use it for our entry way to put shoes on. Never has anything come off on clothes. Notice how much he buffs out using a soft cloth (THIS IS KEY). Hope this helps. :)
Can you use this technique if there is a lot of varnish on the piece? What if you want to go lighter than the original color?
Hello! How do you price clients for jobs like this? I am just getting started into the refinish world and trying to learn the business side of things. Thanks!
How long do we wait between each step
Clean it before wax?
Would this work on an office desk top? Would any stain come off on papers? I have my dad's desk and wondering if we can do this instead of refinishing?
Did you let the paste dry ...before the orange oil?
Did you do any sanding before you started the process? Nice work by the way, I love those products
Thank You, and no sanding :-)
@@FurnitureRefinishingStudio Thank you so much sir.
Great video. But lose the music.
I've been looking for ways to restore my parent's 1959 Swedish Modern china hutch without needing to strip it or chalk paint it. (Horrors!) This, hopefully, seems to be the answer.
However, there is a cup ring and a couple scratches on the top. Do I sand them out first? Will sanded areas take the colored wax differently?
(I'm going on 70yo BTW)
It's possible, so it's advisable to do a test on an inconspicuous area.
I was advised to use a rag with three percent hydrogen peroxide on it overnight. It worked on the two black water rings! I will use Restore-a- Finish on the maple desk. I have used golden oak and walnut on other pieces.
Does the past wax come in many colors?
Would this work on an exterior door with worn finish?
Theoretically it would but wax is not a good exterior finish.
Would you recommend this process if the antique item has some kind of varnish on it?
Sure, most pieces do.
Great video. I have an old wardrobe that has been part sanded. Will I need to sand the whole item before I start this?
If you want
How about an exterior door that gets about 6 hours of sun a day?
Love your work! Curious if you could help me with a piece I am working on, similar to this one. Is there somewhere I could message you?
Great video and explanations! Could I use Behr Dark Interior Chalk Decorative Finish Wax in place of the Briwax you use?
I would compare the ingredients and try a sample first.
@WeRefinish Beautiful work! I am repurposing an old Eastlake dresser for a bathroom vanity - would this process work to waterproof the top (around the sink)?
It will NOT waterproof, so no for around the sink.
Wonderful information. Music is a distraction.
I have a cherry drop leaf table that I accidentally spilled some paint thinner on the top. It has a a lacquer finish, I think - it got sticky and finish dissolve with the paint thinner - Now I have a sort of V shaped spot where there is bare wood - approximately 3 inches by 3 or 4 inches. Will the paste wax, orange oil, feed- n- wax method work to make the top look uniform? If not, can you tell me how to fix it? Thank you so much. Loved you video. Pam
Great video, Rodney, love the show- as-you-go techniques! In the future, please lose the hard rock music or just tone it down... it is distracting and annoying.. 🤪😵 You're welcome
Very good video! You might consider losing the canned rock music...
BRO IM SO DEAD I PUT BLEACH ON MY MOMS WOODED TABLE AND NOW UTS STAINED HOW DO I FIX IT
Revive would of been a more suitable word rather than refinish.
i dont really like it. a real strip/sand/stain/finish is sooo much better.
I respect your opinion, and honestly strip and refinishing furniture is what I do for a living. That being said, one of the greatest gifts I can give viewers are options because no two situations or persons are alike.
But you left all the dirt and dust on the surface and in the crevices and without cleaning, you put wax all over it!
Take the music out, very distracting to what you are doing.
Finally a video about that which is not in hindi. Nice! I didn't understand indian's. 🤣🤣
I bought a HUGE Hanging Primitive Antique Corner Cabinet with a bonnet and carving today for $60... the piece is amazing and I am going to do this! THANK YOU!
So the wax that you first used, does it add color to areas of wood where the stain got rubbed off? Just wondering if I could use that on an old coffee table I got that has stain missing rough areas instead of doing the whole refinishing process.
Great video! Lemon oil also contains mineral spirits, Orange oil doesn’t 😊
You make it l@@k so easy. Think this will work with antique chifferobe that has a Charred wood finish?
I want to distress a farmer table that has a high gloss finish. It is a blonde wood. I don’t have a workshop and need to do it in my apartment. Do you think if I used your method and afterwards applied white paint and scraped it while still wet, this would result in a distressed white table?
Redoing an antique bed how do I protect the bed linens from the products used on the wood.?
Jeanne Marie
Thank you, it is beautiful.
So I followed the process. It did come out pretty well. I did wear two masks however I have a really bad headache. And this was outside with the garage barn doors open the whole time. It seems to have a lot of Off gas!!!I am wondering how quickly this will dissipate if I leave it out in the garage barn and open the doors on nice days. I’m a little worried. It’s really very strong.
I don't know what wax you used ? Cheaper wax, especially Johnson's and Minwax have more petroleum distillates and can have a stronger smell. The wax I used I don't find offensive at all, but we all have different sensitivities. The Orange oil smells like oranges. As always, read the labels on the products you use because they will all vary. Any smell will dissipate. Aroma is a by product of almost any refinishing product.
@@FurnitureRefinishingStudio Yes thank you I understand what you’re saying. I had a migraine for four days. I used the products you recommended the howard stays no longer make so I used the Bri wax That you linked. I must just be really sensitive to that. It did come out beautiful but I can never do that again. But I am pleased with the outcome. I am trying walrus oil now on a table which has no smell at all. And no petroleum or solvents. Thanks for your help
Thanks for the heads up !! (sorry, bad dad joke). It's a good point you make and something for others to at least be aware of if they are sensitive to odors.
@@FurnitureRefinishingStudio did you clean the product first
Yes...did you clean the furniture FIRST? That would seem a KEY step. Decades of accumulated dirt, grunge, oils from hands all would have to removed FIRST before applying the initial wax. Is that correct? If so, what product did you use to clean the piece before you started this video? Thanks!
