Wish they had those about 20 years ago when I couldn’t keep any driver on the planet and ended up with a 1 iron off the tee! I like the idea of the mini driver for sure, but at the moment I love my driver and 3 wood so no room in the bag. Didn’t know there even was an SLDR mini driver! I still have a hybrid SLDR in the bag though. I liked that review, especially the length of it and the use of the mini launch monitor for some quick numbers 👍🏻
Thanks Tyler, I’m exactly the same as you, just don’t have a place for one in the bag.
Mini driver just looks like an old school driver. I have got my grandfather's Castle driver from the 70s and apart from the steel shaft looks like the se sort of thing, shorter shaft and smaller head than modern drivers.
Absolutely mate! Nothing in golf is new as they say.
I can imagine a mini driver being a good option at certain golf courses, but I'd seldom use it at my home course, so I've never considered getting one even though I only carry 13 clubs in my bag.
I think that’s the main issue Howie, no room for such a specialist club if you hit driver well.
Playing a mini driver, set up: Driver, Mini Driver, 5w , 4-W, 52 & 58 and a Ping Chpr!!! Took 1 shot off hcap 1st 3 rounds to +1 now, with a chipr!! 😂
Love that! If it works it works! Well done on the handicap too!
I want a ChipR, but my friend has said he won't play with me 😂. I don't care, I want one, are they as good as the UA-cam videos say?
Can Lester do a video with it? 😊
@@Meatbrish my view , they are designed to help dodgy chippers with short game, if you have a decent short game then its a weapon to be used and gives more choices around the green. I even use it from 150 if its really windy the upright angle makes it easy to stay over the ball and hit a low grabbing pitch from that distance also good from 150 in out the rough and uphill lies!!! Buy one
I actually have this same Callaway, but it mostly lives in the garage. To me, it just feels a little dead when striking the ball, and I don't get that much more distance than a well-struck 3-wood off the tee. So similar conclusion, no room for it in my bag.
That’s exactly how I felt Jarad. I would like to try a newer version and compare the two in the future, see if it’s any better.
Got a 13* Dynapower driver lofted down to 12, it’s great off the tee and off the deck
Do you carry a 460cc driver too Timmy?
It is a standard 460 driver
not quite the same thing but I've previously took length off a normal driver which was an old driver so wasn't overly concerned of the consequence of anything going wrong. I remember being quite positive about it, just vowed not to butcher the driver I bought new though thats a few years old now so maybe time to look out the hacksaw.....
I did the same Mark back in the day, all the lads in my group did 😂
I heard Rory said "it's a 2 wood.." They look interesting..🎉
Yeah probably a good description Alison.
My 10 year old grand daughter uses similar club in the fairway quite well interesting topic th for sharing
Have you tried one Richard?
@@berniebarnesgolf yes i have i kept pushing it to the right on both drives and off the deck shaft was a little short and head to light ty for sharing the topic on your podcast
I like the way the, smaller than 460cc head, cuts though the air when I swing it. For that reason I've actually gone backwards in tech about 20yrs, and purchased a Titleist 983k which I believe is 360cc. Love everything about it, nothing to mess about with, just hit it.
I do still have that driver too! When the 460cc driver heads came out I was so reluctant to change and kept it nearly a year longer then everyone else.
Tried several back when the sldr from Taylormade came out. At the time my driver was only hitting about 4/5 fairways. So it seamed like a good idea. But only add 2/3 more fairways. So I just use my 3 wood . It carries around 270 and misses about 2 fairways. Thanks for the videos.
Cheers Max. You don’t need a mini driver if you carry your 3 wood that far.
Good review Bernie. Ta for the information. 👍⚒⚒⚒
Thanks for watching my friend!
Nice and honest
Cheers Colin
I’ve played a 13’ 3 wood all my life so I guess that’s a mini driver on its own.
I’m interested to hear you compare the flight scope to the PRGR (Paul has one) I’ve got the PRGR but want more than it offers without spending stupid money.
I’ll definitely do a review on the flight scope Stuart.
Great review Lester.
Better results with the mini driver than our team at the weekend.
Stay safe and thanks
Thanks David. It’s not for me, but definitely works for several subscribers!
Nice video mate - I think only the really good players or lovers of 3 woods (which I'm not) could game a mini driver. I have Driver, 5w, 7w - works better for me.
That’s exactly the set up I have mate.
I have last years TM Brnr mini driver in the bag and love it. Because of the shorter shaft I am finding the Centre of the face more often than my “proper” driver and so getting better distance and dispersion. I don’t use it from the deck as I leave that to my 4 wood or hybrids.
That’s cool John, have you tried a shorter length shaft with the 460cc driver head size? Might be worth a go.
@@berniebarnesgolf had a 1” shorter shaft in a Callaway XR16 I used to have and was certainly an improvement on a full length shaft. Struggling to find one for my Ping G400.
Last year’s Burner Mini is awesome. I hit it just as far with better dispersion than my normal driver. In fact, I gamed it as my normal driver for a few rounds and then decided to test a 460cc driver at shorter length and I found the perfect combination of length and forgiveness. If not for the mini driver I would not have thought of a shorter length driver.
Love that! I’m definitely going to try and get my hands on the new Taylor made version to test. Also I’ll do a shorter driver shaft video to I think.
@@berniebarnesgolf only issue was I had to add 2 pieces of lead tape to my 460cc driver to make the swing weight right after shortening it 1.25” as without the lead tape I could not feel the head with the shorter shaft.
Great video would be interesting to see a fitting for a driver then a mini driver then a 3 wood in the same fitting to see the real benefits from it 👍👍
Great idea Dave and I wonder how many fitters would recommend one instead of the £500 plus 460cc drivers they sell.
Lester Barnes club reviewer extraordinaire. Great review Bernie
Hardly 😂 but thanks Brian.
I think I will pull out my old Big Bertha from the 80's and walla.....a mini driver.
😂 that’s more or less what it is!
@@berniebarnesgolf A few years back I used it as a 2 wood. But me being the club whore that I am I moved on.
We all are mate 😂
Got the Taylor made one 2 weeks ago - love it and tbh it has given me increased confidence off the tee!
Do you lose much distance mate against a 460cc driver?
A little, but on average i hit the middle of the club face more. I have taken 2 inches of shaft and fitted a midsize grip - this coupled with the smaller head means I find it a lot easier to hit out of the middle. Not much deviation on a bad shot either.
Hi Bernie. I bought one of last years (BRNR) TM Mini drivers and it's a useful albeit situational club for me when control is at a premium to distance. Playing short and/or tight golf courses would be one obvious example. Also, because it has more loft than a driver the ball fight is higher, and the descent angle steeper. This paid dividends last summer when some of the local courses were baked hard and over-runs often meant trouble. I look at is as being a 2 wood.: a good option when control is a premium over distance.
Thanks for the feedback mate. Do you always carry it in the bag or does it come in and out depending on the factors you mentioned!?
@@berniebarnesgolf The BRNR mini is a swap in and out club for me. I can't hit it reliably enough off the turf for it to replace my fairway wood full time, but from the tee it is a fairway finding marvel.
If i could hit it off the deck consistently id definitely consider putting one in the bag!
I use a strong 3 wood at my home course as it’s tight but when playing different courses I use a taylormade m6 which goes 280 carry has rolled out to 335
I use to have a Ping LS that I’d use at long open courses too.
I am having a complete meltdown with my game so I have walked away from it for a couple of weeks to see if the rest helps get my enthusiasm to play again ! I recall these mini drivers being all the rage many years ago & then they disappeared from the shelves!
I’m sorry to hear that Martyn, your game looked decent when we played at the Belfry last year.
Lester mate , cracking vlog ! You are so similar to me as its too much of an inbetween club ! Stick to what works ! Cheers mate as always phil
Thanks Phil, I can see the benefits of one if you struggle off the tee, but as you say such a specialist club.
Yeah, me and my mates were just talking about these last week and while there maybe the odd shot every now and again where it could be useful we came to the conclusion it's a lot of money for a club you'd hardly use plus which club would you take out
I’m in agreement with you Dave, the cost against the amount of times I’d hit it doesn’t make it an option for me either.
Very good explanation for this type of equipment. Tried one, not for me.
I think that’s my conclusion too Andrew.
Good video Bernie although I’ve never tried a mini driver I someone who did I’m not sure it really suited him but he doesn’t play anymore so it doesn’t really matter lol I’ve seen them and the new taylormade one looks really nice but it might just be that they’ve done it in the same colours that the old bubble shaft was in and I used to game them and I loved them lol
I loved that driver (and the colours too) David! The old logo is a cool addition too!
@@berniebarnesgolf I have to agree on that Bernie
Why don’t they just make a 3 wood with a larger face with adjustable shaft so you can have a shaft length to suit you 👍
No idea Garry, I’d guess calling it a fairway Driver is better for marketing?
Whats the flight scope like?
Im doing a review on it today Kev!
Perfect 😂😂
I really think that if people are struggling with drivers with how easy they are nowadays then you’ve an issue. It’s the easiest club to hit. I just don’t see the advantage of a mini driver if you’re losing distance on the big stick. 460cc head. High launch. Custom fit. Various lofts. It’s never been easier.
Agree Mark, however I’ve always been a bit hit and miss off the tee, so fancied seeing if the mini driver would give me a little more confidence. Realised it’s me and not the club 😂
So a 2 wood then.
More or less Richie 😂
All drivers should be no longer than 43” in length and made of persimmon 😂
And if you don’t carry a 1-iron, you’re not trying hard enough Lester (or is that just me? 🧐)
😂 you were born 50 years too late Craig 😂
😂 you were born 50 years too late Craig 😂
Hmm. I have a Ping G10 that I have cut 3/4 of an inch off the butt of the shaft. I seem to find the sweet spot more often, and still get reasonable distance. I use it when accuracy is required. But it is still a 460 head. Cheers from Texas🤠⛳🏌️
I think I will do the same experiment Michael as I know most of us would improve with a shorter length driver shaft.
