Because of your wisdom and teachings I have produced such a full and beautiful and bountiful garden in Phoenix! I’m in positive shock and just so happy and so proud I can feed my family! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! You changed my life! I can grow my own food in the desert and it’s beautiful!!!!! Bless you honey!
Thank you! I am one year new to the Arizona desert climate. I'm experimenting and still getting my bearings in the garden. Thanks for these helpful tips. I'm in the Tucson area. 😊
I am gonna have to put my shade cloth back up. I havent yet because a have a momma dove that has taken over one of my hanging pots. She is on round 3 of babies. When these leave, up goes the shader. I dont disturb doves.
the monsoon season was an eye opener for a first time outdoor gardener. not so easy as indoor. between wind tearing shade cloth then the sun beating down, the hornworm caterpillars, the pots drying out so fast, has been very educational.
Thanks for the great information! I am originally from the east coast, where I had a pretty successful garden, but here in the Phoenix area I feel like there's no hope. Everything I plant in Spring and Summer dies immediately. I've had good luck with broccoli, lettuce, and especially kale, in the winter, but everything else immediately starts dying when I transplant into my garden. I buy garden soil and add fertilizer and compost, and still no luck. I didn't add mulch at all, and that's probably part of the problem, and I never thought of having the plants only exposed to morning sun because I always hear that they need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. I'm going to try to get some mulch today and put my next batch of seedlings out this weekend. Thanks again for the tips!
Your most ambitious video yet. I hope all low desert gardeners see this video and gain inspiration. I had no idea what I was doing in 2020 when I started my garden in Scottsdale AZ, almost everything died once the heat of the summer came. But then I found your videos and your planting guide calendar. My third year garden is thriving, all thanks to you
I stumbled across your channel about 1 to 2 months ago; was so excited to finally find information with growing vegetables in Arizona! I went head first in learning as much as I possibly can and I still do and have recently started planting my first seeds (cucumber, zucchini, carrots, squash, pumpkin, lettuce, pak choi, and nasturtium) as of Sunday 6/12 and already have seeds sprout 2 days later. I have never been so excited to wake up and check out my new garden!
Congrats on getting started. June is a tough time for many of those plants. Check my planting guides for planting dates for the best chance of success. growinginthegarden.com/what-grows-in-arizona-gardens-in-june/
This is a great explanation of the growing seasons! I'm in El Paso, Texas, not Arizona, but I think many of the things you talk about in your videos are applicable for us as well.
I love watching my garden grow a little each day, that is my favorite part of gardening.Thank you for sharing your garden videos so now I can watch your garden grow too! Your garden is so inspiring! I love it so much I started filming garden videos too. I am in my 3rd year of gardening and still have so much to learn. I hope we can learn more from each other!
Hey you are back. I only found older lessons! Need new ones!!!! I know a family that just moved here from back East with 11 children. Yes I did say 11!!!! She is trying to start a garden now in the low AZ desert. Will send your vlog over to her! Great lesson, thank you!!!

I wish I watched this video when I started gardening. Austin, TX is said to be sub tropical but I think it's more low desert atmosphere. Uuugh. People thriving here always is gardening in morning light or shade. And for nearly a decade I've been renting with unobstructed all day western/southern direct light. So thank u for the video. Hopefully maintain more green luscious container gardens!

I’m in az in zone 9B as well I just found your channel, learning so much from you and I love the quality of your videos! how often do you water at this time of year I think I am watering way too much
Right now, I'm watering my vegetable garden once every three days and my landscape plants every 10 days. Here in a couple weeks when we have consistent temps over 100°F in I will increase that to every other day for the veggies and once a week for the landscape. Hope that helps. Best of luck to you.
I'm a midwesterner relocating to the Phoenix area soon and I'm absolutely terrified at what will happen to my gardening hobby! Thank you so much for this video
Learning to grow here in Mesa has been hard. This is my third year. Thank you for your videos. People keep telling me I’m over watering. But if I don’t water everyday. Everything dies. So I’m so happy to have found your videos. I have so much to learn.
@Kelly Lemen I water every single day (at least during this part of the year) and I have been doing this for almost 15 years in Phoenix. Don't let anyone tell you that. If it works, it works. Now, I will say that if you add a thick layer of mulch as the plants grow you can extend your growth into June and even July with the same water schedule.
I garden in the HIGH desert of Southern California. My biggest challenges are: short growing season, and animals (rabbits, squirels, rodents, and some birds). It is one of the most difficult place I have ever gardened. Only Las Vegas was worse.
Our climates are so different but yet our growing zones are almost the same. I also garden in zone 7-8. Our climate is completely different though. We live I'm a mild temperate rain forest
5:30 minute mark, thank you so much for that. i was under the assumption we had one big growing season provided you could shade them enough during the hottest part of summer, as long as they didnt freeze, we could grow outdoors march through november. do you grow any super hot peppers, ones that take 6-8 months to produce peppers? in april i moved all of mine outside for the first time to try and clear up indoor space, and now almost september i went from multiple gallon ziploc bags of peppers indoors to less than a sandwich baggie size of peppers outdoors, given the same time frame indoor vs outdoor. thank you for making these videos btw, over the last year ive found myself watching your videos for tips for growing in az, and youve been very helpful!
Our best pepper harvests are still coming up - late fall and into December is when I get the most peppers from my garden. Over the summer they slow down and go a little dormant. I give them a good prune (if they need it) in early August and they produce like crazy in the fall.
My climate in south west Western Australia - Mediterranean - would have similar sun / heat (very hot!) but we also get cool and wet winters on the coast. We grow citrus too, in fact my local area was originally citrus farms.
Do you mulch first or plant first? Especially when you direct seed-do you wait until the plants have come up and then add mulch around them? Or mulch first and move the mulch away to plant?
Hi from Utah! Wow it would be nice to grow all year long. Although we have a winter. Some times harsh but lately more mild. I love watching you for tips on hot 🏜️ desert advice. Mulch is a huge one for me too. We have to keep the very little moisture we get close to those roots. Even when we get rain it barely does anything. 😜 I love watching your videos. Thanks for all the great info

Hi! I love in the coachella valley in CA (i think we are considered a high-desert?) does that make a difference in gardening? We don't have a true monsoon season with lots of rain (usually just a little cloudy on some days) does that cut out that third growing season for me? Thank you for all of your tips!
I'm in El Paso... it's actually high desert. We're at a higher elevation, and we get colder in the winter here, and not quite so hot in the summer. I'm still kinda new to El Paso, but it seems to me that many things Angela talks about in her videos are similar.

I am having issues with getting my radishes and potatoes to start. My carrots are not doing well either. I do not have automatic waters so i have to water by hand everyday. We water twice a day. Early am and after dark. We have a potassium water softener system. No hard water here. I need some advice please. Thanks
Tammy check out fine grade vermiculite. It’s a little pricy but we’ll worth the cost. I’m in 9b California - container only - and vermiculite is the ONLY thing that allowed me to successfully grow in 8% humidity, where soil turns hydrophobic quickly. I also add extra worm castings and I think those two things together ensure that every drop of water I give my grow bags stays in the grow bags + I also do 3” of straw mulch to reduce top soil evaporation. I’m a hand waterer (there’s no faucet on my balcony 😒), but this has helped tremendously. It’s possible, you just need to amend a bit. :) As for ollas, they’re terra cotta containers that leach moisture into the soil over time (you bury them in the soil). I think they take up too much space for my own containers, but there are also terra cotta watering stakes that do something similar but are skinnier. I sent my dad some for his Nevada garden and he says they help.
Does the mulch attract termites, cockroaches and scorpions? If so, what do you recommend for keeping the pests away that’s safe for the vegetables so they’re safe to eat?
You may want to do raised beds: growinginthegarden.com/raised-bed-garden-design-tips/ or you can look into sunken garden beds as well: growinginthegarden.com/sunken-garden-beds-water-wise-gardening-in-the-desert/
Where do you find Mulch, Also many people here in az say not to mulch because it attracts scorpions? is that correct. I used to live in a very dry hot part of So Cal and i always swore by Mulching, but the locals I have talked to said not to do that?
I get my mulch from Arizona Worm Farm. The benefits of mulch far outweigh the risk of scorpions. Generally if you have scorpions you will have them whether or not you use mulch.
I've been following you now for two years. You've helped me tremendously. I live in Gilbert. Do you have a thought as to why I am growing different tomatoes to full size but they're not turning ripe. Any thoughts? In advance, thank you so much

The bottom of my soil is 2-3 feet above ground held by stapled landscape cloth. My gardens are not thriving at all. Do you recommend planting on the ground; could this be the cause or is it possible for a successful garden in truly raised beds in your expert opinion? Thanks in advance! 🌵🌞
That’s tough. My guess is they would do better on the ground. Line the bottom and sides with hardware cloth. You may have to create an above ground barrier as well.
Hi, I have the same problem, but my raised beds on the ground do much better, I use my raised beds off the ground for lettuce, last year we got chickens, their manure is helping and I started mulching heavily. This year my garden is doing much better.

Thank you for your tips! I am a beginner in gardening and I only have a small balcony and would love to get advice on what to grow. I get 3 hours of full 8am-10am morning sun, then it is in the shade. Can you recommend fruits and vegetables I can grow in containers. I am researching and getting confused because I’m not sure if 3 hours of sunlight is enough. Thanks in advance!
My blog has several blog posts on container gardening growinginthegarden.com/category/gardening/container-gardening/ and I wrote a book too: amzn.to/3wWY81A

Does anyone have issues with snakes in their gardens?! I am moving to the desert from the northern Midwest, and I am so nervous to plant something that would attract them! Thanks in advance 😊
I have the same question. Recently moved to tucson and am so scared I will find a rattle snake hidden in my plants.
As we consider getting out of the hell hole that Oregon is becoming, Arizona is on our list of possibilities; thank you for this, it gives me hope that AZ might not be horrible.
Hi. We have been here about a year from the hell hole of WA. What other states are on your list? We love the sun and the people, but the lack of water is intimidating for a western WA gardener.

Great tips! Thank You!!
