Damn, I remember playing the 2nd one in 6th grade. Got it off Kazaa or Morpheus or one of those P2P sharing programs. Don't tell anyone! It didn't end up hurting the company, because I had no money back then. I'll pick up the combo pack on Steam to support the creators now that I'm an adult with money. This video brings back great memories. I even burnt it onto some CDs and shared it with friends who came back to tell me how awesome #2 was. I hope they also chose to bought it on Steam to support the creators of this masterful game. I didn't stay in touch with them unfortunately. Thanks for the video. Can't believe #4 didn't get sued with that very, very familiar ship showing up haha.
Never mind what I wrote. That universe edition is too scummy for me to buy anything from that creator. Just disgusting. I'd rather a game have a simple, affordable, and sensible flat fee instead of tying key mechanics that let you continue to play to microtransactions.
I hate microtransactions so much that I feel they should perhaps be moderated by the government in some fashion. Maybe, all that would be needed is a law requiring a clear description of what you can purchase, how it impacts gameplay, and whether it is pay-to-win or if it is purely cosmetic. The law would also proudly indicate if a game is live service with a sensible monthly fee instead.
I understand live service games need a way to monetize to earn from their hard work and that, if the game has continued development, that represents a cost in need of being surpassed by a profit if things go well. Additionally, servers take money to run, so some consistent influx of cash is needed for anything multiplayer and live service. I just enjoy monthly fees I can comprehend and that guarantee I get the entire game over intentionally complex systems meant to prey on people through tactics of confusion (Not clear what you're buying) and addiction (I want to play more, but my lives ran out!). Just such a disgusting system.
I only am all right (and I mean just all right, not ecstatic) with cosmetic microtransactions alone without any pay-to-win components. I'd still prefer all cosmetics available at a fair, flat, and monthly fee. People deserve to represent themselves online to reflect their artistic preferences and artistic side rather than needing to overpay to an extreme degree to keep up with trends and to alter your look to pursue what your heart says you should look like. Damn, microtransactions hurt people hard. Just use a flat, fair, and monthly fee.
Now, I'm a fair person, so I realize a flat fee might lock some poorer people out of the game altogether whereas microtransactions will grant them access to some form of the game. This is extra nice when all microtransactions are cosmetic. This type of socialism is actually admirable when all microtransactions are cosmetic. The replacement is obvious: Have the game be free to play with all features other than cosmetics, and have a flat, fair, and monthly fee associated with unlocking ALL cosmetics for your personal expressive purposes.
Please, can someone create a game that uses this model instead of preying on the instincts of children and the "I don't care I can afford it" of adults working pretty much any job? That's the problem with these systems: Kids don't know they are being put into a classist system where fads and new purchases serve to display your financial resources and serve to assert you are a higher class whereas adults seem to be fine with that despite how awful a system like that is.
Adding insult to injury, the classist system is entirely ARTIFICIAL. At least, when you purchase a luxury good IRL, there is some component of material costs and construction costs. With digital goods, the company pays one artist for a week of work and reuses the result endlessly, flipping on bits for the people eager to display their financial success or the class of their parents. There should never be a class system like that when it is so artificial. Please, start using a single fee to unlock all skins for accessorizing purposes and for the aim of expressing yourself online. The only edge case I can think of is if there's a skin to show how long you've been with the game. Perhaps, that is fine. It's an actual history, and these should likely be available without the cosmetic fee, but I could see it also only being accessible with the cosmetic, monthly fee.

You've unlocked a core memory for me. I completely forgot I used to play this game for hours as a kid on my parents old Windows XP PC.

A quick update, since I got into Chicken Invaders Universe thanks to this video, I can now point out a few things.
    1. The paywall -
So I just learned that the equipment that's labeled as License is actually buyable without one as a "contraband". Asides from increased price, there doesn't seem to be more disadvantages to buying it without the License, so I guess it's not something P2W (more like Pay2LowerTheGrind). I don't blame you for not knowing that, as the game doesn't communicate it in any way unless you actually try buying it without having the License.
    2. First waves at higher difficulties -
You can upgrade your starting firepower by using keys. Another mechanic that's not really explained but changes a lot. With my Plasma Rifle upgraded to 8th starting tier I can actually finish those high difficulty waves with decent DPS.
    3. The grind is real -
Compared to other games? Yes. Compared to other games from the same genre (MMOs)? Not really. When you said that I expected it to be on the similar level of Warframe or grinding Primogems in Genshin Impact. But in reality, compared to other MMOs it's not that big of a deal. I can see why it may be deterrent to people who don't play MMOs as much. The biggest issue here, rather than the grind itself, is that every time you die you're set back 5 keys, since someone thought it's a good idea to make lifes a buyable upgrade (why?).
    4. Pay 2 Win -
YES, IT IS. It's always a terrible idea to make the premium currency and the normal currency be the same thing. Why did I spent 27h when someone can just pull up their parent's credit card and have much more with much less hours. Especially in a game where skill doesn't matter as much as your equipment (skill only makes it easier to grind more keys)
Btw I hit 27h playtime after playing it for like 10 days, I think I got addicted.

Thank you for the write up. I'll admit, I didn't spend enough time with Universe when I was working on this video, so I probably missed a lot. The core gameplay is definitely very fun, that much is for sure.

Regarding weapon balancing issues in CI3, CI4 and CI5, there are a few issues with it:
    1. As you mentioned in the video, automatic fire generates more heat than manual fire. In fact, it generates twice as much heat, so if you fired manually twice as fast, it would result in the same heat generation.
    2. Weapons were balanced around the use of automatic fire only. Their performance is comparably similar with automatic fire, with the strongest weapon being only around twice as strong as the weakest weapon. Manual fire increases that gap with certain weapons being 3 or 4 times stronger than the weakest one.
    3. Manual fire for most weapons is capped at around 6 and a half shots per second. This hurts weapons that fire rapidly since manual fire is often worse on them, while greatly boosting the performance of weapons with slow auto fire, like Neutron Gun, Laser Cannon and Utensil Poker. A notable exception to this is Riddler with its manual firerate going up to 21 shots per second, which is something most people can only do with autoclicker programs.
These issues arised because the developer thought manual fire was something that only a small percentage of skilled players would use, but from my experience there were a lot of people using it.
When Chicken Invaders Universe first released, it had the same weapon behavior as seen in CI5, except with Moron Railgun added and Vulcan Chaingun being revamped a month later. It took the community a few months to convince the developer that it had to be improved. Most of the weapon changes seen in the game like the unique weapon traits were suggested by the community.
On a side note, weapons with variable firerates depending on weapon power also reduce heat per shot with every level. Photon Swarm produces 70% less heat per shot on max power compared to 0 power, but it also fires 5 times as often, which is why it heats up faster. Weapons in CI3, CI4 and CI5 were mainly balanced around specific heat per shot values instead of the time it takes to overheat.

That's a very detailed explanation, thank you very much. Weapons being balanced around automatic fire certainly explains some of the quirks I found with auto/manual firing. I did have the impression that the Lightning Fryer was capable of dealing more damage per second by manually firing it rather than simply doing the intended automatic firing.

    • @Sammarald
      @Sammarald Рік тому +2

Lightning Fryer's automatic firerate of around 6 shots per second is close to the manual fire cap of 6.5, but it also has the quirk of being impossible to overheat with manual fire due to the heat per shot value being too low, so it is better with manual fire. Plasma Rifle is even better, since its automatic firerate is only 5 shots per second.

I have never heard of this series before. It (especially the intro to the third game) looks incredibly cute and awesome and I bet I'd have loved it as a kid if I'd known about it.

Loved this game as an early teen. Played a lot of it on bus trips from home to school and vice versa.
    Thanks for the review.

5:06 the ability to move the ship with the mouse was actually added in the remastered version. Anyways, nice video!

Really reminds me of games back in the 90's and oughts. The simplicity, but also the humor.

They might have been able to fix the classic games' overheating imbalance by letting you have two weapons, maybe one standard and one "high temp".

I don't know if you're still following this game's development, but finally after four years this game left early access. Does this change anything asides from the branding on the steam store page? I have no idea, but at least it's a "full release" now.
